#53: Vanessa Champion - Biophilic Design for Climate Action

Originally an academic at UCL, Ness has a PhD in Greek and Latin, and also worked in the British Museum, honing her interest in research in how societies flourish and how the visual environment informs our behaviours. Way before her academic career she had started selling her landscape and seascape photography, relishing the quiet, healing moments that nature gave to her during her teenage years. It was during her 20s that she started living very “naturally”, eating whole foods, reducing her grid energy consumption, choosing natural materials to wear, etc. When she left academia Ness worked in various industries, including finance and broadcast working across creative, editorial and management roles, culminating in editing a London newspaper and setting up her own media company.  Four years ago, she founded The Journal of Biophilic Design to share interviews with thought leaders on how biophilia supports wellbeing for people, planet and place. A serial traveller and professional photographer, Ness creates “Virtual Nature Walls” for healthcare, schools, offices and homes. Ness is also founder of PhotoAid Global Foundation www.photoaid.org.uk and co-founder of The Space Doctors.  Journal of Biophilic Design: https://journalofbiophilicdesign.com/ Ross on JBD Podcast: https://journalofbiophilicdesign.com/podcast-journal-of-biophilic-design/a-woodland-habitat-in-the-city Green Urbanist websiteContact RossSocial Media:https://twitter.com/GreenUrbanPodhttps://www.instagram.com/greenurbanistpodhttps://www.linkedin.com/company/green-urbanist-podcast- - -Get 10% off Course: Sustainability Essentials for Built Environment ProfessionalsSubscribe to the Green Urbanist Newsletter Contact Ross Website Linkedin

#52: Divya Hariramani - Community Orchards, Urban Fruit Trees and Social Sustainability

My guest and tour guide today in Divya Hariramani Herrero. She is a sustainability consultant and Associate Director at Longevity Partners, a London National Park City Ranger and runs an instagram page called Fruity Walks, where she is chronicling the amazing and surprising fruit tree of London and beyond. She is fascinated by all aspects of sustainability from low energy engineering to growing fruit trees in her South London neighbourhood. I joined her for a walk around Bermondsey where she told me the stories behind two urban orchards and how the community has come together to grow fruit on forgotten spaces. CORRECTION: Around minute 27:00 Divya says that the lemon tree came from Malta. We later found out that it actually came from Cyprus. #51: Regenerative Highrise with Tomas Stokke (Haptic Architects) and Shonn Mills (Ramboll)

In today’s episode we’re talking about the contentious issue of tall buildings. Some people love them, some people hate them. My guests today have come up with a concept for high rise that could be much more sustainable and adaptable than conventional skyscrapers. My guests today are Tomas Stokke and Shonn Mills. Tomas is a co-founder of Haptic Architects based in London and Oslo. He overseas Haptic’s international work and has taught, lectured, exhibited and been published internationally. Shonn Mills is Global Head of High Rise Buildings at Ramboll, with more than 20 years experience as an engineer. They have collaborated to produce a new concept for sustainable tall building design, which is called Regenerative Highrise. They have taken a really interesting approach in tackling a difficult urban site in Oslo and designing a building that responds to this while being low carbon and extremely adaptable. We talk about all of the interesting details in the conversation so I won’t get into that now. Episode 16 of this podcast was called ‘Are Tall Buildings Sustainable?’ and I concluded that typically tall buildings have a huge carbon and material footprint and its is clear that they can have a negative impact on a city’s urban design, environment, economy and social life. So I came into this conversation a bit skeptical and ready to challenge them. We ended up having a really good conversation and I think they have done some really useful work here in pushing the design of tall buildings much closer towards sustainability and taking a long term approach. If you are enjoying the Green Urbanist podcast, the best thing you can do to support it is to share an episode with a friend or colleague who you think might enjoy it. I hope it sparks some interesting conversations for you. Links:Dezeen article on Regenerative Highrise: https://www.dezeen.com/2022/05/23/haptic-architects-ramboll-regenerative-high-rise/Sustainability of Downtown Highrise vs Suburban Low Rise study: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/321977968_Downtown_High-Rise_vs_Suburban_Low-Rise_Living_A_Pilot_Study_on_Urban_SustainabilityHaptic Architects: https://hapticarchitects.com/oslo-highrise/Ramboll: https://ramboll.com/contact/rdk/shonnGreen Urbanist websiteContact FormSocial Media:https://twitter.com/GreenUrbanPodhttps://www.instagram.com/greenurbanistpodhttps://www.linkedin.com/company/green-urbanist-podcast- - -Get 10% off Course: Sustainability Essentials for Built Environment ProfessionalsSubscribe to the Green Urbanist Newsletter Contact Ross Website Linkedin
