RT43: Is Internet Satellite Right for Your RV?
For many, it's important to stay connected - even when we are in our RV in the middle of nowhere and there is no WiFi or a phone signal to take us online.
Enter satellite Internet.
It allows you to stay connected from just about anywhere you have access to the sky - with a catch or two that you need to consider.
In this episode, Mike Wendland talks about the new satellite Internet system he has with the Zenmaster of full-time RVing - Campskunk. Among other things, Mike and Campskunk talk about:
What is involved in getting a satellite system for the Internet for an RV
If satellite Internet is easy to set up and use
If satellite Internet delivers the same speed you get with a home network
What doesn't work well with satellite Internet
The costs of satellite Internet equipment
How much access to monthly satellite Internet services can cost
For photos and more how-to info on how we hooked up my system. go to https://rvlifestyle.com/adding-satellite-internet-to-an-rv/
Also in this episode, Mike is joined by his wife, Jennifer, to answer listener questions, he talks about Acadia National Park in Maine and why it should be on your RV bucket destination list, tells you about three great apps to edit photos on your smartphone or tablet, and a lot more!

RV News of the Week: Maine National Park Battle, Two RV-Related Deaths
Voters Block Proposed 150,000-Acre Park in Maine: Controversy over a proposed national park in Maine's North Woods continues after voters in adjoining communities rejected referendums that would have been a major step in creating the 150,000-acre park. Those in favor said it would have provided a much-needed boost to the area's economy, while those opposed don't like the idea of so much involvement from the federal government in managing what happens in their area. Proponents say the votes are a setback, but that the issue is not quite dead. (Read more) [spp-timestamp time="17:34"]

RT42 Podcast: How to Choose the Right RV for You!
Small house, big yard.
It's one of our favorite sayings here at Roadtreking and for good reason: It perfectly sums up what we love most about our RV lifestyle.
"Small house," of course, refers to our Type B (small) motorhome and the "big yard" is, well, wherever we want it to be. The whole of North America.
That's why we know a Type B is the perfect kind of motorhome for us.
In this episode of Roadtreking, however, we go beyond a cool slogan to delve into specifics about what we took into consideration when getting into RVing. Among other things, we talk about:
The flexibility in travel offered by a smaller RV
The maneuverability/ease of driving
If Type B's are more fuel efficient (hint: they are)
How a Type B can be parked and used when NOT on the road
What style of RVer would most likely find a Type B suitable
The benefits of setting up camp when traveling in a Type B
Who shouldn't get a Type B
Also in this episode, Roadtreking also brings you news about the busy summer travel season, the latest on gas prices, shark attacks on the rise at a popular RV destination, travel tech tips and more!

Listener Question: Am I Seeing More Blown Tire Treads On The Road?
Listener Boyce asks about finding a seemingly excessive amount of blown truck-trailer treads in the Louisville, Kentucky area. Mike and Jennifer share info on the serious highway danger that Mike has written about before here: https://rvlifestyle.com/blown-truck-tires-serous-highway-hazard/
Keep in mind that debris littering the highways and interstates of North America causes over 25,000 accidents and at least 100 deaths each year in the United States and Canada. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reports that blown tire pieces are the number one road debris.
Tire safety experts say this is the worst time of year, when high temperatures cause the most stress on tires.
That means - aside from the fact not much seems to be done to curtail the problem of all this debris cluttering our roads - you need to be careful out there and stay alert. [spp-timestamp time="8:50"]
Listener Question: How Well is Your Redesigned AC Working?
Listener Kevin asks about the performance of Mike and Jennifer's RV air conditioner - specifically, how well it is working. The AC on their Roadtrek CS Adventurous XL is not on the roof as in most RVs, but has been moved underneath the vehicle. Mike and Jennifer share their experience. [spp-timestamp time="12:50"]

RT41: The New World of Unplugged RVing
When people started camping in their vehicles in the early 1900s, they really had one goal: to open up the world.
They just wanted to see what they could see and even the most primitive RVing allowed that to happen. At some point, however, things changed. It became as important to take as much of your home with you when trying to, in fact, get away from home. Things like full hookups became a necessity. As such, the number of possible RV destinations seemed limited, the original intent of RVing somewhat lost.
But no more.
New technology such as lithium-ion batteries that recharge themselves and solar panels that convert the sun's energy to power for RVs are returning the RV lifestyle to its original intent, giving RVers a whole new world to once again explore - AND allowing for comforts like air-conditioning in the middle of the desert. It's the best of both worlds - new and old.
Jennifer and I experienced this during our recent 15-state journey to the western United States. We plugged in exactly twice during almost two months of travel. We talk about what it was like on this week's Roadtreking podcast.
We also have a special announcement about the availability of such features on Roadtrek motorhomes.
Also on this episode, we talk to Paul Ulreich, Verizon's "Uber User," about headsets and portable speakers; we answer a bunch of listener questions' and we get an Off the Beaten Path report about Maryland's coast and a lot more!

Black and grey water management
Battery conservation
Camping in the wilderness
Wildlife precautions
How important it is to keep a clean campsite
[spp-player]
Answering a listener question, Mike and Campskunk talk about their experience of test piloting a revolutionary power system for RVs that utilizes lithium batteries.

RT38: Energy Self-Sufficiency is the Future of Class B RVing
Our trip west could have turned out much different were it not for the technology that makes RVs like ours energy self sufficient - the kind of tech that provides a look into the future of Class B RVing.
We can boondock pretty much anywhere, anytime.
Case in Point: We didn't have a reservation for one of the campgrounds near Grand Canyon and would've been stuck waiting forever to get one instead of enjoying everything this amazing landmark has to offer.
But with a Roadtrek CS Adventurous XL from the Roadtrek factory that uses the latest and greatest technology, no room in the campground meant no problem for us. We just found an "off-the-grid" place in a nearby national forest - free, by the way - and set up camp. We had all the power we needed, and then some.
In fact, we later moved on to Zion National Park - the place where we recorded this episode of the Roadtreking RV Lifestyle podcast - and though we were in a National Park campground, the lack of electric hookups there was no big deal for us because we have the ability to bring our own power, thanks to a rooftop full of solar panels and a bank of high-energy, fast-charging and high-efficiency lithium-ion batteries.
You should have seen my fellow campers scratch their heads over how I made my fresh-brewed coffee every morning and how we had enough battery power to run our air conditioner all afternoon the day the temperature soared to triple digits.
Boondocking like we so often do is exactly the kind of thing Roadtrek President Jim Hammill says represents the future of Class B RVing. He is the featured guest on this week's podcast and talked to me before we headed west about the future of the Class B small motorhome lifestyle. Among other things, Jim and I discuss:
Why the Class B RV market is booming
The role technology has in the boom
How changing RVing demographics help shape the market
How technology like solar power is allowing people to find and camp in more places
How lithium-ion batteries will change the RV industry
Why you may someday never even need to take a power cord with you RVing
Why you may never have to deal with dead batteries at some point
Some of the new features that will be available on next model year Roadtreks
If green RVing products like solar-powered ovens are actually viable alternatives to the way things have always been done
Also on this week's episode we talk traveling with pets, recommend travel apps, have news about U.S. National Parks and another anti-RV law, and have a big announcement about a big Roadtreking event set for August.

RT37: How to Find Great Places and People: Head West On Route 66
If you listen closely to this week's Roadtreking RV Lifestyle podcast, you can hear birds chirping in the background, a light breeze blowing, and our dog Tai playing around camp.
It may not seem like a big deal but it is, especially after what happened to us just a week ago.
That's when our RV was illegally entered and ransacked by thieves who took a lot of our stuff. Of course, dealing with that was an unexpected speed bump in our journey to get where we are as we recorded this week's podcast - the Sonoran Desert of Arizona.
Though the burglary and theft is still very much on our minds as we deal with replacing stuff and dealing with insurance, we are delighted to be in the west again.
Speaking of our journey here, we took Route 66 for a good part of the way, breaking off near Albuquerque to head southwest to Tucson, where I picked up a satellite Internet system for our RV. As you read this and listen to this report, we're headed back north again, in Flagstaff, Ariz., right back on Route 66.
On this episode of the Roadtreking podcast, we talk to two groups of people we didn't plan to meet: a bunch of travelers from outside the United States and an outdoor adventure group of RVers who call themselves the Sisters on the Fly and have three rules: no men, no children, no dogs.
That, plus listener questions, the latest RV news, traveling tech and a great RV bucket destination list- all on this week's Roadtreking RV Lifestyle podcast!

They thank everyone for the tremendous amount of support received and provide an update on what - if anything - the insurance companies involved are doing and also some more detail on how the actual break-in may have occurred.
Listener Questions: Why Do I Need a Mobile WiFi Hot Spot Device If I Have a Smartphone?
A listener asks a very good question about why anyone would consider a separate WiFi hot spot device like Verizon's JetPack if they have a smartphone that can "double" as a WiFi hot spot device. Mike answers why it's not exactly apples-to-apples.
Listener Feedback: Why Did You Get An Roadtrek CS Adventurous XL?

RT35 Roadtreking RV Podcast: Bear Attacks and Bad Weather – How to Handle RVing Dangers
Bear attacks and bad weather are making headlines all over the place and you definitely do NOT want any future headlines like that involving you on your RVing adventures!
That's why for this episode of the Roadtreking RV podcast we talk all about these two big potential pitfalls of RVing.
We start by addressing what people are doing wrong when it comes to bears, including getting too close to take pictures. We have a report from the National Park Service about how to enjoy bears without any trouble.
The majority of the show, however, is dedicated to dealing with bad weather, which is especially timely for the spring season. Mark Polk, of RV Education 101, joins Mike to talk about the dangers of severe weather and RVing. Among other things, they discuss:
How to drive when you suddenly encounter heavy winds
What safety equipment you should condider installing on your motorhome or the towing system for your travel trailer
Why an RV is no match for strong winds
Why you should not stay in the RV when a dangerous storm is approaching
The most common mistakes RVers make when encountering sever weather
The first question you should ask when checking into an RV park or campground
If storm-chasing TV shows are helpful or harmful when it comes to educating people about severe weather

RT33 Roadtreking RV Podcast: Why the RV Lifestyle is So Unhealthy for So Many
Everyone knows there as so many great things about the RV lifestyle, but there is one thing particularly not-so-great: it can be downright unhealthy.
Of course, there are good reasons - it takes effort to make healthy foods and avoid stopping for a quick snack or fast food meal and even more effort to stay fit.
After all, who wants to work so much or be uncomfortable when you are supposed to be most comfortable - while RVing?
Too bad say the guests on this week's episode of the Roadtreking RV Lifestyle podcast - Stefany and James Adinaro of TheFitRV.com - who say you're going to have to suck it up if you want to live long enough to truly enjoy everything that RVing has to offer. The payoff for being fit and healthy? Being able to RV into your 90s!

How the RV Lifestyle is terribly unhealthy for so many people
[spp-tweet "While on the road you can not eat as if every day is a vacation"]
Walking isn't enough or a good enough exercise for most people
You must exercise 150 minutes of moderate cardio exercise each week. If you don't sweat, you are NOT working out
You need two to three full body sytrength workouts every week
You can be healthy and fit and active into your 80s and 90s IF you exercise and eat right
What to eat every day to lose weight or keep from gaining weight

Reader Questions and Comments
Bob, from Maine, asks about undercoating to prevent rust on his Class B RV, particularly in northern states where they use a lot of salt on the roads. We recommend a company called Krown for rust proofing, Check out their website at http://krown.com
Listener Mike asks a question about tire pressure on his RV. I share how the suggested pressure for his unit (a Roadtrek 190 on the Chevy chassis) is 50 psi for the front, and 80 0si for the back. All RVs should have a sticker mounted just inside the driver’s side door that list the ratings for tire pressure. Don’t mess with the back one. If it says 80, leave it there as that is calculated based on the weight that an RV carries at the back of the vehicle.
The front tire number can be adjusted up to about 65psi. Experiment a bit, in 5 psi increments. Never go below the rating on the door. Generally, the closer you are to that front rating on the door sticker, the smoother the ride will be. Here’s a suggested tire pressure guide for RVers - http://www.goodyearrvtires.com/tire-inflation-loading.aspx. Sponsoring this part of the podcast is Van City RV in St. Louis, Mo.
Van City RV only sells Class B. RVs. Owner Ray Dwyer has been in the RV business for 44 years and is considered the dead of Class B RVs. Nobody knows more about small motorhomes that Ray and his crew. They have new and used Class B motorhomes in stock from the major manufacturers. When you fly in to buy your RV from Van City, they'll arrange to have you picked up from the airport and will reimburse you $500 toward your airfare. Then, your RV will be fully prepared for travel, complete with full tanks of fuel and propane. After a complete orientation with their staff on your new RV, you can take delivery and set out for home. Dan the Van Man gives the week's specials on the podcast.

Traveling Tech Tip:

No longer. I carry back-up.
That’s because with so many of us using smartphones and tablets all day long and more and more USB devices becoming “necessities” for daily life, the standard batteries that accompany our gadgets just don’t cut it for all-day use.
I talk about why I always carry the Mophie Powerstation Duo External 12000 mAh Battery.
