There's no such thing as a perfect eater so making mistakes is a part of normal eating. What if you were raised to believe larger bodies are disgusting or eating is to be controlled? Then what? The longest relationship we will have on earth is the relationship with ourselves. How we feed ourselves is important to our health and quality of life. Therefore our relationship with food is important to heal.
Nutrition science is a fluid science.

Hear how Julie defines Eating Disorder recovery and why she believes you can 100% recover!
Our family of origin's belief on size and food behavior can get in the way of normal eating. Normal eating includes mistakes and trusting our body. Teaching size discrimination will keep us from trusting our hunger and fullness cues. It teaches us to rely on dieting and disordered eating.
Disordered eating is society's normal eating *Julie pouts*.
Picking out 1 or 2 new foods to try each week will help your brain and taste buds get more comfortable with normal eating.
The only FDA approved medications for eating disorders are foods.
Looking to become a normal eater? Find other normal eaters! And, it may impact your family and friends to also become normal eaters.
Patience and acceptance will help you move forward to healthy normal eating.

Ep 006: Help! I am addicted to food.

Do you feel addicted to carbs, sugar, or any foods? Hear the latest research on food addiction and what dietitians in the trenches have to say about the experience. Can food addiction explain your problematic eating? Or is it something else?
Key Points:
Eating is just like peeing. Yup, it is although don't mix the two. Stop judging your food choices unless you also judge your urination habits.
Food can have too much power and if it does in your life you are not alone!
Don't believe the hype! The food addiction theory model has many limitations including:
Food addiction is poorly and vaguely defined. Too catch all.
Most research done on animals and can't translate directly to humans.
Fails to consider alternative explanations for neurobiological pathways seen in food addiction research.
When food restricted, pleasure centers of brain light up stronger than when not restricted. This means diets will make you feel addicted to food rather than food causing the addiction.
Marci says, "Food is meant to be rewarding" {My new favorite quote!}
We can be addicted to food just like we can be addicted to music and laughter.
Tug and pull with food can promote the food addiction experience when other underlying experiences promoting the experience.

Dieting gets us in the way of primal evolutionary systems. When food feels addicting and a person is not a failure! The body is being a successful human.
What are the steps to recover from what feels like food addiction?

Is your eating satisfying and pleasurable. Be sure eating includes these!
Ponder this: what's happening in my body rather than what's happening in my brain?
Move the judgement and moralistic thinking away from food and the body will find balance to find health.

Ep 005: Help my daughter who is fat like me.
Do you parent a fat child? This letter comes from a large woman raising a child who is now teased at school because of her size. Should she put her child on a diet? Take her to the gym?

Key Points:
12 in 100,000 children have Type 2 Diabetes* yet 2900 in 100,000 children experience an eating disorder**. Statistically, worry more about eating disorders than increased adiposity.
Teach kids how to have a healthy body image and a healthy relationship with food.
Is fat a bad word? Let's neutralize it. Just may be the key to positive body image and respecting others.

What to do about junk foods? Stop calling them junk and refer to them as fun foods because they are fun! Offer them a few times a week at a snack or as part of a meal.
Do you make your child go to the gym? No pain no gain = more body hate. Encourage movement that feels pleasurable. As a parent, our job is to help children to connect to the movement their body prefers.

A woman wants to exercise yet feels so uncomfortable in her larger body. She's too embarrassed for the gym, pools, and classes but she wants to exercise and move her body. She hopes Food can help her find the confidence to go to gym classes and a way to eat with enjoyment again. Can you relate??
I phone a friend, Debra Benfield, to help out Uncomfortable Wanna-Be Gym Rat and she speaks about magic carpets and ways to stay connected to promote health and peace.
Key Points
During season 2 of My Big Fat Fabulous Life, Julie was Whitney Thore's dietitian. Whitney experienced similar experiences to the letter writer and found her way back to movement in her larger body.
The letter writer is connected to her body in a health promoting way even though feeling negatively about it...keep connected to that!
The fear of judgement is powerful and in yoga, in it's most basic sense, is about leaving judgement at the door. Separating what others think about her and what she thinks will be key on and off the mat.
Weight oppression
Yoga modifications: start with not add later. Goal is challenge and ease not pain. Downward facing puppy to downward facing dog.
Our bodies let us know when it is time to move and trust it that is so much better than rules and regulations

A new mom so deeply in love with her son is struggling with body image, weight, self-care and all the tough transitions to motherhood. She asks Food for ways to get her body back and eat right, yet will Food go down that rabbit hole of dieting, self-loathing? Naaaaw, Food gives insight into ways for this mom to stay connected to herself: the one she has known her whole life and the new person who is now a mom.
Julie Duffy Dillon phones in a friend, Lindsay Stenovec RD, CEDRD, a dietitian specializing in helping women who are postpartum experience body positivity.
Key Points:
Motherhood is filled with ups and downs, massive transitions, and zero sleep.

Dieting followed by a period without dieting will feel chaotic yet exciting. It's not the food's fault rather the dieting.
Postpartum can be filled with joy and love AND unfamiliar, disconnected, and full of grief. Commonly, we turn to the body and food to ground ourselves.
Saying "I want my body back" = the quickest way to make Julie feel uncomfortable and turn into a raging feminist (that's a good thing by the way)
Reaching out to past routines and people can help make the postpartum experience more familiar and less stressful.
Hot coffee or a hot meal can keep us new and/or frantic moms stay grounded and promote self-care.
Beginner's Mind: imagine how your child experiences your body; they haven't learned about weight stigma yet!
New moms working toward body positivity will help her own self-care as well as prevent passing on cultural messages of body hate

A woman has been dieting for over 30 years and feels like a failure starting yet another weight loss plan. Instead of being hopeful and excited, she is feeling shitty. Really shitty. Dive in as we discuss health without dieting, family dynamics, and learning to eat again.
Key Points:
Diet rock bottom can be exhausting yet an opportunity to regain footing to a healthy relationship with food.
New diets can feel hopeful and be a seductive fantasy that life will be better with weight loss. Watch out for my F*bombs!
Our bodies do not like bodies. Falling off the diet wagon means you are being a successful human rather than a failure.
Binge Eating Disorder is serious and can take 4 to 7 years to recover. Perfectionism will keep you stuck in it longer! Mistakes help you know the best path to recovery.
The pursuit of weight loss can keep you from healing their relationship with food whether it is binge eating, emotional eating, and other disordered eating.
Lots on why diets don't work.
Not dieting is not giving up. It's letting yourself be.

Clean eating. Low carb. Low fat. Do this not that. Now what? Eating is getting too stuffy and complicated. Diets promote harm not health. Plus, they are boring.
Key Points:
This dietitian lists her concerns and pleas to food for help. People don't fail diets. Diets fail people. Let's start a revolution to respect our bodies and reject the diet mentality.
