Is it unfeminist to discuss women's spending habits? SPENDTEMBER with Emma & Victoria

In the final episode of The Comments Section Season Two, we’re digging through the dirty laundry pile that is the intersection of feminism and spending habits, and whether it is unfeminist to critique women's spending habits. Historically, financial media has framed men's spending around wealth-building and investment, while women's spending has often been associated with saving and cutting back. This dichotomy raises the question: is it wrong to scrutinise women's spending when men aren't subjected to the same narrative? Telling women to ignore their spending habits and simply "build wealth" without addressing the deeper societal pressures misses the point. While it’s crucial to acknowledge that the pressure to maintain a certain appearance or lifestyle is heavily marketed to us, we also discuss the importance of engaging with our financial behaviours. It’s not just about blaming ourselves but rather understanding the structures that shape our financial decisions and taking control to redirect our resources. Let's unpack the money stuff from Love is Blind UK, with Ellie Austin-Williams

[WARNING: LOVE IS BLIND UK SPOILERS IN THIS EPISODE] Love is Blind UK has just wrapped on Netflix and WHAT. A. SEASON. From prenups to "I don'ts" to who pays for dinner and Sabrina's £70 supermarket shop, there were SO many juicy money themes in this series that I just had to unpack with someone.  I'm joined by author of Money Talks, Ellie Austin-Williams, to chat about the couples form this season and explore some of the money stuff that came up during the show. Despite money being firstly a mathematical concept, what we kept coming back to was how deeply values-based so many of the financial conflicts were, highlighting how important it is to understand your own financial compass in order to have a healthy relationship.  Highlights: Reunion debrief, including Sabrina's £70 supermarket shop and an ironing board Clashing love languages and the financial side of investing in a relationship Tom and Maria's clashing financial values Who pays for dinner on a first date? Can you ever reconcile differences in foundational financial values? What questions could the couples be asking in the pods to get to know each other more intimately on a financial level? Prenups, protecting your assets, and what's fair IMPORTANT: when it comes to money and relationships, it's important to be aware of the risks and red flags for financial abuse. This interview episode with Serena McDuff from Respect Victoria explores financial abuse and its warning signs: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0Co414jUd8h9Nghh9sqq2V?si=ZBoM0GBsRUugI82g2jGt7A&nd=1&dlsi=0b9407665813470a  Where to find Ellie: Instagram: @thisgirltalksmoney Book: Money Talks https://www.penguin.com.au/books/money-talks-9781786787996 Website: https://www.thisgirltalksmoney.co.uk/  Where to find The Broke Generation Website: https://thebrokegeneration.com/Instagram: https://instagram.com/the.brokegenerationTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@the.brokegeneration   Order my book, Good with Money!  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Let's talk about failure. The Comments Section with E & V

This week, we're diving into the messy reality of failure. We’re unpacking the modern narrative that every failure must teach us something or shape our success. But let's be real—sometimes, failure is just failure. From botched jobs to disastrous side hustles, we’ve all been there. We explore the pressure to be grateful for failures, even when they don’t neatly fit into our life’s success story. Ever tried to spin getting fired from a waitressing gig into a stepping stone? It’s a stretch. We also touch on the emotional weight of redundancy and how some failures don’t need to be transformed into life lessons. Maybe they’re just missteps we’d rather forget. And while failure can build resilience, not every misstep needs to be a defining moment. Join us as we share our own flops, from failed fitness kicks to embarrassing work blunders, and how we’ve learned that sometimes, it’s okay to just move on without turning every failure into a victory lap. How to "quiet quit" unhelpful consumption and spending patterns

In this episode, I explore the idea of "quiet quitting" beyond the workplace and how it applies to our consumption habits. Inspired by a recent newsletter on stepping back from the beauty hamster wheel, can a change in mindset help us break free from the cycle of overconsumption and superficial self-care? I share practical strategies for assessing what genuinely adds value to our lives, like simplifying beauty routines and scrutinising our purchases. From questioning the necessity of trendy beauty treatments to evaluating convenience-driven consumption, I show how adopting a quiet quitting attitude has empowered me to make more intentional choices, and you can too!  Episode highlights: Practical tips on simplifying beauty routines and scrutinising purchases. How convenience-driven consumption impacts spending. Actionable strategies for making better choices about consumption. “I was able to identify that the thing compelling me to pay for that, or to consider getting that treatment, was because I felt pressure that everybody else was."Emma [12:26] “All of these things are priming us to become these convenience seeking consumers like it doesn't serve us."Emma [20:08] “Is this really expressing myself? …Can I really see beyond this one decision and really can I really make sense of what I'm actually trying to do with this consumption decision."Emma [25:38] Book mentioned: Indistractable by Nir Eyal Follow for help with your fashion footprint: curatedwardrobe.au Where to find The Broke Generation Website: https://thebrokegeneration.com/Instagram: https://instagram.com/the.brokegenerationTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@the.brokegeneration   Order my book, Good with Money!
