A transfer student named Red from Mars is annoyed by Blue and loves the colors on Mars. Her friend Lyria tells her family won the lottery and they are moving to Earth, which shocks Red. Red reflects on her relationship with her brother and her preference for the gray surroundings of Mars. Red explores the city and enjoys the vibrant sounds, sights, and smells. She meets with Lyria at the lookout and discusses leaving Mars and embracing change. Red's frustration grows when she learns her family is also moving to Earth after winning the lottery.

Betsy and Puddles encounter foxes and raccoons in a clearing full of apples, leading to a discussion about ownership and the ethics of stealing. Summer is almost over, and Bernice is feeling nervous and anxious about going back to school. She is thinking about all the new things that the teacher talked about, and she is not sure what will happen. There is even a chance that she and Bobby will not be in the same classes.
