Making Your Workplace Better - Identifying and Ending Workplace Bullying with Linda Crockett and Animah Kosai
We are releasing this special episode in partnership with Speak Up at Work and in recognition of Workplace Bullying Awareness week. How does a dive into WPB fit in with a podcast on Healthy Masculinity? Well, one in three people are bullied at work and, as we’ll hear, male targets of bullying often experience the most significant impacts… up to and including suicide and premature death. The prevalence of domination culture in most workplaces, in combination with the isolating expectations of “Man Box” masculinity makes WPB a potent toxin for men, whether we are perpetrators, enablers, bystanders or targets.
To help us untangle all these roles, dig into the root causes of WPB, and to propose some system solutions and individual actions, Mark and I are joined by Linda Crocket and Animah Kosai, two people who’ve dedicated their lives to empowering others to prevent and recover from harassment and bullying at work.
Linda Crockett is a clinical social worker and activist who is the founder of the Canadian Institute of Workplace Bullying and Harassment Resource Centre Inc., (2010), the first and only full-service resource centre in Canada specific to psychological harassment. Linda provides workplace management services to employers and employees, from all professions and industries.
Linda started the Workplace Bullying Awareness Week 10 yrs ago, and began inviting countries around the world to join in. She believes this is a worldwide issue and we need a worldwide solution. This year, every day between October 17-23rd, depending on where you are, you will have access to podcasts, TV interviews, Radio Interviews, Blogs, Articles, online discussions, posters, t-shirts and so much more. This movement IS making a difference and as a result, positive changes are happening. For more information on this week, see the links in our shownotes.
Animah Kosai is a British barrister who speaks, writes and advises on Speaking Up in Organisations, specifically to break the silence on wrongdoing.
She founded Speak Up At Work to diagnose the Speak Up Culture in companies and assess their response to reports on wrongdoing, harassment, unsafe and unethical practices. This helps companies address emerging risks early enough before they get too big and become public.
In this episode, you’ll hear me confront my own complicity in the face of a workplace bully and how that complicity affected me. Listen to the full episode to learn how we can stop taking workplace culture for granted and find ways to make the workplace better for all of us.

Calling Men In - Interrupting Harassment and Rape Culture
In this episode, Mark and I explore the roots of domination culture and how men’s response to that culture can lead to acts of violence and rape.
Just a heads up… although the targets of male violence deserve attention, humanization, and support, in this conversation we do center the discussion on men - the men who allow or perpetuate violence against women, even if we think we don’t. We unpack men’s common reactions to stories of rape and harassment, our overt or covert role in rape culture, our resistance to taking action and how men can help each other to overcome that resistance.
In digging into the roots of the violence and the resistance to change, Mark and I do express empathy and solidarity with men trapped in domination culture AND we don’t let ourselves of other men off the hook. This is a fine line to walk but that's the line that needs to be navigated… men holding ourselves accountable and responsible while calling each other IN to allyship and activism with those who are victims of male violence.
Listen to the full episode to learn how men can push back against the code of silence that turns us into complicit bystanders and how we can become better allies, while actually creating a better, more connected life for ourselves.

Mark Winkler: Challenging Radicalized Masculinity
How do we, as men, help other men put down the unhealthy attitudes and behaviors that are limiting them and hurting others? How do we call men in to the challenging work of crafting individual masculinities that include connection, inclusion, empathy and care?
In this episode, Mark and I get to have another rich, insight and laughter filled conversation with a powerful, engaged men's work practitioner. Our guest is Mark Winkler, who, after finishing up a successful career as a musical talent agent, developed an intensive Life Skills program to empower At-Risk young men to adopt safe and productive behavior. More recently, Mark has focused on supporting fathers and families with wrap around mental health services and peer to peer men's groups.
Mark has become a specialist in gently, patiently engaging men in men's work. Part of his approach is to avoid triggering language like “toxic masculinity” which he says can send men packing. Instead, Mark describes his focus on identifying progress rather than calling for perfection.
Listen to the full episode to learn how we can call men in to the process of adopting de-radicalized manhood. Listen all the way to the end to learn how mens work is like scuba diving.
Key Takeaways:
When calling men in to healthy or de-radicalized manhood, look for progress rather than perfection
Progress in behavior is more important than progress in “articulated” change (i.e. actions speak louder than words).

Graham Goulden: Breaking The Silence That Binds And Blinds Us
In this episode, Mark and I get to have a warm connecting talk with Graham Goulden a leadership and violence prevention trainer from the United Kingdom. Graham spent thirty years as a Scottish police officer and Chief Investigator specializing in criminal investigation, training, and crime prevention. During that part of his career, Graham noticed an important reality: almost all of the criminals he pursued and the victims he tried to protect were men or boys. He started wondering why we don’t talk about violence as a problem that predominantly affects males. AND one that can be solved by - mostly - men.
And now Graham leads his own training business - Cultivating Minds UK - where he focuses on creating space for honest, compassionate conversation that works to promote community, mental health, and teamwork. Part of Graham’s special sauce is his ability to “walk and chew gum” at the same time… He’s a strong cop who is open about his own vulnerabilities, he can both have empathy and hold people accountable, and he can support males who have been victims at the same time he works to prevent them and others from further perpetuating violence.
Listen to the full episode to learn how men can push back against the code of silence that turns us into complacent, complicit bystanders and how we can become champions in our own lives and the lives of others.
