Evelyn Hartley
How much of what we watch in true crime entertainment is actually true? And what happens when a story is rewritten for the screen, replacing a family's painful, decades-long mystery with a neat, tidy, and conclusive fictional story?
The new season of Netflix's Monster is a global phenomenon. But in its telling of the Ed Gein story, it presents a young woman named Evelyn Hartley as one of his confirmed victims. It's a gripping narrative.
There's just one problem. According to the official investigation, it's not true.
My mission in this episode is to tell the true, unresolved story of Evelyn Hartley's disappearance, to reclaim the facts from the fiction, and to remember the girl who vanished long before she was ever a character on a screen.
14-year-old Evelyn Grace Hartley was last seen on October 24, 1953, in La Crosse, Wisconsin. She has brown hair and blue eyes. At the time of her disappearance, she was 5’6” and weighed approximately 126lbs. She was last seen wearing red jeans, a white blouse, and white bobby socks.
Anyone with information is asked to call the La Crosse Police Department at 608-785-5962.

Solved: The Yogurt Shop Murders
In Austin, Texas, in 1991, the city was on the verge of becoming the place we know today, a tech hub, a cultural destination. But back then, it was still a big
town that felt small, a place that believed itself safe from the kind of
darkness that haunted bigger cities.
At the Hillside strip mall on West Anderson Lane, there was a little shop called "I Can't Believe It's Yogurt!" It was a symbol of that every day
American life… a place for after-school treats, first dates, and a first job. A
place of simple, ordinary innocence.
Buton the cold night of December 6, 1991, this symbol of innocence became the scene of an unspeakable crime. An act of such brutal violence that it would steal four young lives and leave a wound on the soul of the city that would fester for nearly 34 years.
Amy, Eliza, Jennifer, and Sarah would become permanently etched into the city's memory. Their story became a decades-long quest, not just for a killer, but for the truth. It was a quest marred by false starts, thousands of dead-end leads, wrongful convictions that sent innocent men to prison, and ultimately, a scientific breakthrough that no one, not the investigators, not the families, not the city of Austin, ever saw coming.
What happened inside the yogurt shop on that cold December night? And how did one of the most infamous cold cases in Texas history finally find its answer?

From Revisionist History: The Alabama Murders
We're sharing a preview of a new podcast we think you'll enjoy. It's from the new season of Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History podcast, The Alabama Murders. Florence, Alabama. 1988. A preacher has an affair. A woman is murdered. One death cascades into more, stretching across decades and leaving no one untouched — victims, bystanders, perpetrators, and those just trying to help. Eventually, the consequences lead to the center of a hot national debate on who should be allowed to live, who should die, and how the state should kill them. On The Alabama Murders, Malcolm asks: why, in our efforts to alleviate suffering, do we so often make it worse? Find Revisionist History: The Alabama Murders wherever you get podcasts. The Dardeen Family
In November 1987, Keith Dardeen grew uneasy after a string of 15 homicides
near his home in Ina, Illinois, and began planning to move his family to

children were brutally murdered.
Years later, suspected serial killer Tommy Sells claimed responsibility, yet nearly four decades on, the case remains officially unsolved.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at 618-244-8004.

Shirley and Russell Dermond
In a quiet, gated community in Georgia, Russell and Shirley Dermond seemed to embody the perfect picture of retirement—an 88-year-old World War II veteran and his 87-year-old wife, spending their golden years on the serene shores of Lake Oconee. But in May of 2014, that tranquility was shattered. Russell was found brutally murdered in his garage, decapitated. His head was missing from the scene, and Shirley? She had vanished without a trace.
