How industry, technologists, investors & government can collaborate to achieve the maximum co2 reductions
In this conversation with Matthias Mersmann, CTO of KHD Humboldt Wedag, the conversation explores the different modes of collaboration needed to bring essential new technologies and low/zero carbon business models to reality. We talk about the need for next gen regulations, the need for scalable full-process decarbonisation (vs. single tech) to be in evidence - but also the projects that can be focused on while proof of next gen tech is developed. This will interest you if you're interested in the collaborations needed to deliver net zero, and also want to hear about how a long-standing partner to a hard to abate sector plans to play a key role in co2 reduction. Mobilizing capital markets to drive the transition of heavy emitting industries: Transition Bonds
Repurposing existing investment plans to support climate priorities is going be a key factor in delivering net zero. Could the bond market be a key element of financing decarbonisation at scale? Alex Cameron and Sean Kidney, CEO of Climate Bonds, discuss the real need for transition bonds to help challenging industries find their route to change (a route which might not be available through green bonds or more traditional finance). The discussion covers the structure and clarity that will be essential as well as the need for appropriate ambition on the part of the corporates. This episode is for you if you're seeking investment that could help deliver decarbonisation in energy and co2-intensive sectors. It will also appeal to those interested in the progress of the green bond market and who want to understand what other investment routes exist. How to get CCUS to commercial scale
Alex Cameron, Founder of Decarb Connect talks with Guloren Turan, General Manager - Advocacy & Communications, Global CCS Institute. With plenty of detractors as well as major backers, Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage tech has been a keen area of interest in industry. For the hard to abate sectors, this might be the single most important technology in their mission to decarbonise - but questions remain about how to make it an affordable reality. There are also plenty of people who believe it is nothing more than a way for "business as usual" to continue. Guloran Turan brings many years of experience to the discussion, having been the head of climate change activities at BG Group before joining the Global CCS Institute. The conversation spans discussions of the current state of play in CCUS, including the range of projects at scale in addition to next gen deployments in discussion, through to what needs to happen for technologies to get to full commercial viability. This episode is for you if you're interested in CCUS, curious about the current state of play but also want to understand what it will take for next gen technology innovations to get to scale.Episode Links: www.globalccsinstitute.com/why-ccs/www.decarbconnect.com/digital-festival/ Thanks to Matt Wallace at Janno Media for his support with production and editing: www.jannomedia.com

How can hard to abate sectors respond to, and deliver on, the EU Green Deal?
The EU Green Deal maps out an ambitious route to carbon neutrality for all companies and countries in the EU. But how should industry respond? Alex talks with Emmanuel Brutin, the Director of Public Affairs at the pan-european Cembureau to explore their newly revised roadmap for the cement and concrete sectors. We discuss issues including the development of a European CO2 transportation network, the possibility for cement to decrease co2 from energy usage by using more non-recyclable waste and biomass - and how the cement and concrete sector can drive the industrial circular economy. Also up for discussion are low carbon/carbon neutral cement products and the route to getting more of these used in place of carbon-intensive product. This episode is for you if you're curious about policy, are considering investment in low carbon cement or technologies - or if you're an industrial wondering how other sectors are seeking to deliver on critical co2 targets.Episode Links: https://cembureau.eu/policy-focus/climate-energy/carbon-neutrality/ www.decarbconnect.com/digital-festival/ Thanks to Matt Wallace at Janno Media for his support with production and editing: www.jannomedia.com

How to shorten the time from demonstration to commercialisation of new industrial decarbonisation tech
Industry, policy, technology challengers and consumers - all of us play a role in accelerating the time it will take for decarbonisation innovation to get to commercial scale. Alex talks with Dr Gbemi Oluleye to explore how the wider system could come together to influence scalability of tech. This episode is for you if you're considering investment in an early stage tech, if you're involved in policy or if you're an industrial wondering how you'll meet critical co2 commitments. If you're new to the fiield of industrial decarbonisation, our discussion about the challenges for scaling technologies that work quickly enough is a great starting point for immersing yourself in the subject. The conversation also examines emerging opportunities including Decarbonisation As Service and Decarbonisation System Orchestration. Thanks to Matt Wallace at Janno Media for his support with production and editing of the Decarb Connect podcast: www.jannomedia.com Supporting Links, including recommendations for reading suggested by Dr. Oluleye: www.imperial.ac.uk/people/o.oluleye www.decarbconnect.com/digital-festival/ Industrial decarbonisation: Shrinking the time from research to technology adoption https://energyfutureslab.blog/2019/11/14/industrial-decarbonisation-shrinking-the-time-from-research-to-technology-adoption/Decarbonising industry: how much policy-driven adoption is needed to let the market take over https://energypost.eu/decarbonising-industry-how-much-policy-driven-adoption-is-needed-to-let-the-market-take-over/ A mountain to climb? Transforming the cement industry - What's the route from 8% of global CO2 emissions to carbon neutrality?
Ian Riley talks with Alex about the cement sector and the active decarbonisation projects that are already underway. With the industry owning a serious emissions number, there are no shortage of detractors - but it is also a sector that is pursuing a wide range of product & operational decarbonisation projects. Energy efficiency, potential alternative fuels, cementitious additives and next gen technologies like CCUS are all up for discussion. Find out about some of the hottest projects - but also the reality of the policy impediments and opportunities that need resolving. Design, Deploy, Learn, Adapt: what are we learning from early projects and where next?
Alex speaks with Aniruddha Sharma, CEO of Carbon Clean Solutions about what they’ve learned from the demonstrations and pilots that they are leading with industrial clients.
With $22m in funding recently secured, CCSL's low-cost approach to carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and separation technology is getting backing and support from big names. Find out what is being learned from early projects, and also how industrials benefit from a more incremental approach to CO2 reduction.

Leading industrial decarbonisation in the post-covid 19 era
July 2020: I was lucky enough to talk with Pratima Rangarajan, CEO of OGCI, and Dominic Emery, Chief of Staff at BP. The conversation was an opportunity to get their thoughts on how companies across the hard to abate sector can deliver leadership on decarbonisation in the post-covid era. Central to the conversation was the eye-opening stat that the near-global shutdown had reduced emissions by just 4-8%. With this as context, we talked about how different companies are stepping up and the increasing ambition around targets and strategies that are being set. We also talked about the policy/leadership frameworks and workforce skills that will be essential to decarbonise at scale. www.decarbconnect.com
