Lewis Schiff | Embracing Your Strengths, Learning From Your Failures
“Every person has the opportunity to discover what their language is in the business world. The more time they spend living that language, the better they will do.” — Lewis Schiff Being an entrepreneur gives you the freedom to get hands-on in every area of business. The best entrepreneurs learn which parts they excel at and which ones are better left to someone else — and they do as much of what they’re good at as they can. Lewis Schiff calls this the first habit, and it’s just one of many pieces of wisdom he’s picked up over two decades and counting in business. Schiff sold two websites in the era of the dot-com boom, but it wasn’t until he became an author of books including The Armchair Millionaire, Business Brilliant and The First Habit that he really started to understand the unique challenges that come with being an entrepreneur. Schiff is also the chairman of the Board of Experts for the Birthing of Giants fellowship: a program that schools business owners with companies making $5 million to $250 million in revenue on how to reach the next level. He is also the executive director of Moonshots and Moneymakers, a conference produced by Birthing of Giants and Oxford University that shows entrepreneurs billion-dollar opportunities inside their markets — or even their own companies. In this episode of Leading With Genuine Care, you’ll learn how the first habit can help you and your employees, how —and why — to know whether you’re operating a moonshot or a moneymaker, and why making yourself the lynchpin of your company is a design flaw. You’ll also learn: Why entrepreneurship is a journey to self-discovery Why Lewis’ view of the Manhattan skyline made him feel lonelier than ever during the pandemic How a janitorial business was able to create 10x more value through one of Lewis' programs How you figure out what you're best at (hint: it's not easy!) Why you shouldn’t take your skills for granted What Lewis found out in his research on wealth Why asking great questions makes you the most valuable person in the room Lewis' (controversial) take on the best way to build a strong leadership team Connect with Lewis Schiff Facebookfacebook.com/lewisschiffmentor Twitter twitter.com/lewisschiff LinkedIn linkedin.com/in/lewisschiff/ Learn More From Lewis Schiff Apply to Birthing of Giants This exclusive fellowship program accepts 60 applicants a year, who attend a masterclass designed to help them grow their businesses to meet the demands of the market. Nipun Mehta | Move Slowly and Care Deeply
“How do we hold transactions in their place, while also honoring the much larger spectrum of the human experience?” — Nipun Mehta You’ve probably heard of paying it forward: Responding to an act of kindness someone shows you by helping another person. To Nipun Mehta, it’s not just a nice idea, it’s a way of living and leading that can change all our lives for the better. Nipun is a former Silicon Valley computer scientist who traded Big Tech for big ideas. He founded ServiceSpace, a support network for projects that nurture kindness and compassion. The idea is to build a community of people who do things for each other not in exchange for money or other material rewards, but with the aim of creating an ecosystem based on kindness. It’s an ambitious project, but Nipun isn’t in a rush. As with everything in life, he'd rather go slow and build systems that work than follow the stereotypical Silicon Valley motto "move fast and break things." You may be aware of Nipun from his various TED Talks. He’s also been praised for his ideas about spreading compassion by no less than Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama. In 2019, he received the Goi Peace Award — having turned it down multiple times previously. In this episode of Leading With Genuine Care, Nipun explains how we’re already all engaging in indirect reciprocity, why he never takes shortcuts in relationships or life, and what a bold trek across India taught him about the connection between uncertainty and compassion. You’ll also learn: How to escape our narrow reciprocity feedback loops The collective power of paying it forward How his mom and dad’s “sandbox” approach to parenting shaped Nipun’s outlook Why he’s proud to be someone who cares a lot How a walking pilgrimage through India forever changed his perspective on compassion How a plumber moved Nipun to tears Why ServiceSpace doesn't have a plan Where to find the best apples in the world (and why this is important) Connect with Nipun Mehta Facebookfacebook.com/servicespace/ Twitter twitter.com/servicespace Website servicespace.org/ Learn More From Nipun Mehta Find out more about Nipun Visit his website here: http://nipun.servicespace.org/about/ Watch Nipun Mehta’s TED Talks Leading with the gifts of emergence: https://www.ted.com/talks/nipun_mehta_laddership_leading_with_the_gifts_of_emergence Can we create social change without money? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoV23TJe4UM What does it take to create a giver culture? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lP17YsBrVkQ Get Rob’s Weekly Newsletter Never miss an inspiring conversation about compassionate, positive leadership on the Leading with Genuine Care podcast plus other great articles and insights. Sister Lucy Kurien | Having Faith in Your Boldest Ideas
“The power of love, that's what I experience every day. Just looking into the children’s eyes: that's enough.” — Sister Lucy Kurien Facing an imposing goal with limited resources, many of us would give in, unsure of where to even start. Sister Lucy Kurien took on a mission that seemed almost impossible — and she’s still aiming higher. Sister Lucy became a nun at 19, because she wanted to help the impoverished people of India. She joined the Holy Cross order, and worked for its Human Organisation for Pioneering in Education (HOPE) in Pune, a city in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. The organization offered vocational training for women, but not shelter. One day, Sister Lucy was forced to turn away a heavily pregnant woman begging for a place to stay, away from her abusive husband. He murdered her that night. The incident shook Sister Lucy to her core. Despite having no money or experience, she resolved to start a shelter for women and children from all religious, caste and class backgrounds, who needed to escape domestic violence and poverty. Sister Lucy opened the first Maher home six years later, in 1997, and gave it a motto: “Always room for one more.” In this episode of Leading With Genuine Care, you’ll learn from Sister Lucy about how her faith helped her fight the odds, following her conscience even when it made her mission harder, the impact of COVID-19 on Maher, and her message for people of all religions. You’ll also learn: How Mother Teresa inspired Sister Lucy's work The meaning of Maher's motto, “Always room for one more” How Sister Lucy overcame her fears to start the first Maher home How she’s stayed true to Maher's non-religious origins How it really feels to be considered an inspiration About her meeting with former US President Bill Clinton and Pope Francis The lessons Sister Lucy wants to pass on to the children in her care Advice she has for everyone — you may be surprised! Nate Klemp | Applying Mindfulness in Everyday Life
“A lot of people in the business world tell me they don't have 30 minutes for mindfulness. … [But] there are all these opportunities for mindfulness hidden in life.” — Nate Klemp Mindfulness is good for more than a morning meditation or a nighttime wind-down. Used consistently, it can help you feel less anxious in every moment of your life. This week, Nate Klemp, author and co-founder of corporate coaching company LifeXT, tells me how he draws on his mindfulness practice in daily tasks, from answering emails to taking crowded flights. Nate originally wanted to be a philosopher, but a serious bike injury and disillusion with academia turned his focus to finding practical applications for the ideas he was studying. In his quest, he discovered mindfulness, and started to look into its potential for improving mental health. With his LifeXT co-founder Eric Langshur, Nate wrote a book, Start Here: Master the Lifelong Habit of Wellbeing, about using mindfulness to decrease stress and improve mood. He followed it up with The 80/80 Marriage: A New Model for a Happier, Stronger Relationship, written with his wife Kaley Klemp. In our conversation, we talk about how Nate uses mindfulness and meditation as tools, the importance of making an effort in your relationships every single day, and how to manage distractions beyond just ignoring them. You’ll also learn: How physical adjustments can affect your mental state How to really enjoy the mental health benefits of nature, wherever you live About “email apnea” and how to address it How to use habit stacking to improve your daily routine How to instantly shift your mental state through gratitude Why micro-moments matter more than dramatic gestures — at work and at home And more! Scott Glassman | How and Why to Make Positive Psychology Part of Your Daily Life
“We can begin to develop habits of positive thinking, feeling and doing, which become more accessible because we're using them more often. In turn, the negative connections become less reinforced, and they weaken in our neural networks.” — Scott Glassman Learning to apply positive psychology doesn’t mean changing your mindset overnight. Instead, Scott Glassman, Psy.D., recommends starting your journey into prioritizing positivity with small, manageable steps. Dr. Glassman worked with Martin Seligman, Ph.D., one of the founding fathers of positive psychology, in Dr. Seligman’s lab at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Glassman has spent the last eight years at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he created the A Happier You program. Over seven sessions, patients at the college's health center were taught how to build a self care practice and techniques for managing stress, based on tenets of positive psychology. The college leaders were so happy with the results, they made A Happier You available to staff, faculty and students. To reach even more people, Glassman has also turned the program into a book: A Happier You: A Seven-Week Program to Transform Negative Thinking into Positivity and Resilience. In this episode of Leading with Genuine Care, Glassman explains why gratitude helps us feel connected to the world even when we’re alone, and how to counter the human tendency towards the negative by creating an upward spiral. In this conversation, you’ll learn: Why little actions can improve our happiness How and why to take your happiness temperature The importance of setting up your day with a strong foundation Why we tend to pay attention to what's going wrong Why positive psychology doesn’t mean always being happy Why we sometimes don't make changes in our lives Why expressing gratitude feels so good And so much more! Chris Gale | How Businesses Really Can Change the World for the Better
“If you start with, ‘This is the thing we want to change, we're happy to play our role and be part of a broader movement,’ I truly believe that you can change the world, while making money.” Being kind has never been cooler — or more profitable — for businesses. This week, I learn from Chris Gale why he believes corporations really can be a tool for positive change — if leaders’ hearts are truly in the right place. Gale is the Head of Social Impact for eBay UK, and was previously Head of Social Mission Strategy in Europe for Ben & Jerry’s. (For the record, he’s a Cherry Garcia or Chunky Monkey man.) eBay’s global mission is guaranteeing economic opportunities for everyone in the world. In the UK, that manifests as free training schemes to help social purpose businesses find wider audiences, showcased in the eBay for Change marketplace. In our conversation, we discussed the pros and cons of businesses getting involved with social missions, mistakes to avoid, and how to balance the desire to do good with the drive for profit. In this episode of Leading with Genuine Care, you’ll also learn: Why Chris would love to move to rural India How moving from research to enterprise changed Chris’ perspective on socially conscious business practices How Ben & Jerry’s retained its social mission after the Unilever purchase How big business can help — and hinder — nonprofit causes The differences between a social enterprise, a nonprofit and a B Corp How eBay’s UK office honed in on a mission it could manage Why the most success social enterprises start with a mission, not the market And so much more!
