S2 Episode 41: The Art of Disclosure in Coaching with Nishe Patel

Coach, Supervisor and Trainer Nishe Patel shared a post on Linked In: “If coaching is a partnership, should the coach’s experience and thinking be shared more freely?  I’ve been going back and forth over this question for quite some time now, and it’s challenged how I see coaching. As much as my focus is on my clients and what they want to achieve, I feel I may be missing opportunities to support them further by not bringing more of myself into our shared conversation. I recognise the value of placing emphasis on the client, after all, they are the focus of our session. However, I feel we sometimes forget that the coach is a person too. And the value they can offer expands well beyond supporting clients to figure things out for themselves.” So I asked her if she wanted a chat at The Coaching Inn. It was great fun - and here it is. S2 Episode 38: Coaching Lessons from The Camino with Claire Pedrick

In today's episode, 3D's new managing partner Su Blanch talks to Claire (who isn't leaving) about some of what she is learning from her Camino across Spain. It's also a great demonstration of coaching!   Takeaways The Camino was a promise, a walk, and a fundraiser. We hadn't really taken seriously what it was we were going to do. You can't really think about walking 600 kilometers. Every morning we got up, we did it. No backsies means you can't go back. You have to be really sensible when injured. The depth of connection is built quickly when sharing experiences. You have to trust the process and work it out as you go. Not everyone desires the same experiences, but mutual giving and receiving can be beautiful. Talking it out helps clarify thoughts and feelings. Gratitude for the people encountered along the journey is profound. The enormity of experiences often becomes clearer in hindsight. Feeling seen by others is a powerful experience. Being recognized as a pilgrim fosters a sense of belonging. The journey is about personal capacity, not material possessions. Mastery in coaching is akin to being a pilgrim—always learning and evolving. Unconsented coaching can lead to feelings of absence in relationships. Deepening learning can come from experiences beyond traditional knowledge.   Claire's back in the host chair from next week!
