James Constantine - Sydney’s Quest for a World Marathon Major (Bonus Episode)
*BONUS EPISODE: VERY MUCH ONE FOR THE RUNNING NERDS*James Constantine is a keen runner (he’s bloody quick, too) and he is also part of the huge team putting on this year’s Sydney marathon, presented by Asics, on Sunday September 17. It is a very special event this year- it is a “candidate race” in hunt to join New York, London, Berlin, Boston, Tokyo and Chicago as a World Marathon Major. To earn major status, they have a checklist of 104 requirements, one of the key requirements being the number of runners participating. Already they have over 10,000 people signed up which will make it officially the biggest marathon event ever held in Australasia. In this conversation with James, we talk about the process of Sydney trying to join the ranks of the world’s most prestigious marathons.I’m signed up and I cannot wait- I’d love to see you there too! They have an “early bird” entry available until the end of July ($165)And Air New Zealand have some decent priced flights that weekend ($600 return)https://sydneymarathon.com/marathon/https://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/Follow James on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/that.guy.who.runs/ Hosted on Acast. Marcus Daniell - Winning an Olympic Bronze Medal, Founding a Charity, Mental Health, and more!
Marcus Daniell is New Zealand's fifth greatest tennis player of all time (According to a random website I found with a google search). Questionable website rankings aside he is a phenomenal tennis player, especially in doubles. He won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. And has beaten Novak Djokovic! He is so much more than a good tennis player though. Off the court, he is the founder of an epic charity called HIA (High Impact Athletes) which we discuss in this podcast. He also shares his remarkable journey in the world of tennis, philanthropy, and mental resilience. Thanks very much to the sponsors of this episode. Skin Institute: https://www.skininstitute.co.nz/0800 SKIN DR (0800 754 637)6000 Kiwis are diagnosed with melanoma every year and 300 people die from it. Skin Institute are THE skin cancer experts. I’ve been using their protein powder and smoothie recovery powders for ages now and I genuinely swear by them. It’s not just for elite athletes (and weekend warriors like me). Most of us could do with more protein than we are currently getting, and Radix do the best flavors with the best ingredients.https://radixnutrition.co.nz/ Hosted on Acast. Shorty Clark - Defying Aging and Becoming a World Champion Triathlete at 71
Shorty Clark from New Plymouth is officially the worlds best triathlete in the 70-74 category. He became a world champion in Abu Dhabi late in 2022 at the age of 71. 9 months later, in this podcast, he still gets emotional talking about that moment. It’s a sport he only took up in his late 40s and back then he couldn’t even swim so its been a long journey- a 26 year apprenticeship he jokes.I thought Shorty's story would be a good one to share for a few reasons. The main one being what YOU and I can get out of it. It’s a good boot up the arse and reminder that with hard work, persistence, and some good old fashioned self discipline, even things that might seem impossible can become possible. Thanks very much to Skin Institute, the sponsors of this episode. https://www.skininstitute.co.nz/0800 SKIN DR (0800 754 637)6000 Kiwis are diagnosed with melanoma every year and 300 people die from it. Mea Motu (World champion boxer and domestic abuse survivor)
Mea's life today as a mum of 5 in her early 30s looks very different to how it did just a few years ago. Through her 20s she was stuck in marriage as a victim of relentless and brutal domestic abuse with unimaginable violence and cruelty.Mea bravely opens up about her past and how she managed to survive and rebuild her life. By sharing her story, she hopes to empower others to find their own strength and use their voice to make a difference.I absolutely adore Mea and I know you guys will too. I think we can all get something from Mea’s journey from rock bottom to the top of the world. If she can get through this, still smiling and laughing. We can all get through whatever adversity life throws your way. This episode needs to come with a strong warning and I would urge anyone who feels triggered by this discussion to reach out and ask for help. In the words of Mea herself:“Speak and do not be ashamed.”https://www.instagram.com/mea_meamotu/Thanks to Skin Institute for sponsoring this episode.Did you know 6000 Kiwis are diagnosed with melanoma every year and 300 people die from it? Dean Barker (Yachting legend and bowel cancer survivor)
DEAN BARKER:Dean Barker is a name that is synonymous with yachting in NZ. Especially the Americas cup. When you think of that event his name is up there with Coutts and Butterworth back in the day and now Burling and Tuke.Unfortunately, he is probably remembered most for being the Team NZ skipper when we were on the receiving end of one of the greatest comebacks in sporting history- remember that? San Francisco 2013. Team NZ was up 8-1 then we ended up losing to Jimmy Spitalls Oracle boat by 9 races to 8. We reflect on that period in great detail in this conversation. We also chat at length about Deans battle with bowel cancer recently. Bowel cancer is the most commonly reported cancer in New Zealand…and probably one of the least talked about cancers. As a country we have 3000 cases and 1200 deaths each year. https://bowelcancernz.org.nz/Dean has always struck me as being like an old school kiwi guy- stoic, strong, silent and intensely private. So I really appreciate him coming on the podcast and being so open about some really personal and painful stuff. Thanks to Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. Even before they jumped on board as a sponsor, I was a fan of their products. Now their protein powder is part of my daily plan. Every morning without fail. They are so much more than just protein and smoothie powder though. Check out their website to learn more about this kiwi company doing special things.https://radixnutrition.co.nz/ Hosted on Acast. Sarah Gearhart (American author)
Sarah Gearhart is a New York based sportswriter and now author. You name the organization; she has probably written for it! USA Today, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, ESPN, Runner's World, Vice Sports…In April 2023 she published her first book: “We Share the Sun: The Incredible Journey of Kenya's Legendary Running Coach Patrick Sang and the Fastest Runners on Earth.”https://www.booktopia.com.au/we-share-the-sun-sarah-gearhart/book/9781639363551.htmlI met Sarah in Boston during the 2023 marathon weekend, and we sat down for this podcast conversation about her experience writing this book including how she convinced the notoriously private Patrick Sang to take part in it, the many many months she spent in Kenya and her observations and experiences with the greatest marathon runner of all time, Eliud Kipchoge. And his coach, Patrick Sang.I’m a sucker for a running book. I’ve read just about every single one imaginable. This is my new favorite. (Disclosure: I am a Kipchoge fan boy. But this is so much more than a book about running or the guy behind the guy). Whether or not you buy or read the book. I do hope you enjoy the conversation with Sarah. Thanks to Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. Even before they jumped on board as a sponsor, I was a fan of their products. Now their protein powder is part of my daily diet plan. They are so much more than just protein and smoothie powder though. Jay-Jay Feeney (NZ Queen of music radio)
Jay-Jay Feeney is the undisputed queen of music radio in New Zealand. She started the radio station The Edge and grew it into the massive brand that it remains to this day. She currently hosts one of New Zealand’s most listened to afternoon shows on the station, More FM.She is the author of two books and has won too many NZ radio awards to count!.This is a strange episode...jeust because of the intensely personal nature of it. I can’t imagine I will ever record a podcast that is as raw, emotive, and vulnerable as this one is. The reason being- the personal relationship.JJ and I got married in 2004. We separated about 5 years ago but remain very, very close. Because of this relationship, we know everything about one another and had the ability to touch upon some very serious stuff. Because of that a trigger warning is needed- this podcast episode discusses family violence and sexual abuse, infertility and IVF, depression, and suicide. If you listen to this and need some professional help in New Zealand, you can call or text 1737 free of charge to talk to a trained counsellor. This podcast also includes a lot of light moments too as we zoom in on some of JJs many career highlights. Thanks to Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode: . https://radixnutrition.co.nz/Adding to their popular Protein range, they have just launched a new range of breakfasts which are incredible: strawberry banana, coconut, vanilla, mixed berry, Apple and cinnamon and chocolate. These are super simple and super healthy. They are filling. And did I mention they taste amazing? You can pour it into a bowl or just pour the water straight into the bag and consume it that way: .https://radixnutrition.co.nz/ Hosted on Acast. Kelsey Waghorn (Whakaari White Island eruption survivor)
Kelsey Waghorn was a Whakaari White Island tour guide in December 2019 when it erupted. This is a powerful and raw conversation with Kelsey. And it is a tough listen in parts, made slightly easier thanks to Kelsey's ability to find the humor and light in the darkest situations. We talk about Kelsey and her life before, during and after the eruption, the resilience and courage it takes to navigate life after such a harrowing experience.Through her journey of healing, both physically and mentally, Kelsey opens up about her struggles with PTSD and how she learned to be kinder to herself. Her story serves as a stark reminder that even in the darkest of times, laughter and hope can help us heal and move forward.I loved Kelsey's company so much. She left me feeling inspired, moved and motivated. She doesn’t do much stuff like this so I can’t thank her enough. Thanks to Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. They are (currently) a little kiwi company doing big things. Check them out for yourself right here:https://radixnutrition.co.nz/.Also, big thanks to the spectacular QT hotel in Auckland for looking after Kelsey while she was in Auckland.https://www.qthotels.com/auckland/ Hosted on Acast. Simon Cochrane ("Ultraman" world record holder)
Simon Cochrane:A week before this podcast conversation took place, Simon Cochrane travelled from his home in Hamilton NZ to take part in the "Ultraman" event in Noosa as a relative unknown in this event. After 3 days of intense and brutal racing he not only won the event, he also SMASHED the world record. The Ultraman event is a crazy few days of racing. It was created in 1983 by some mad bastards who, I'm assuming, decided the Ironman distance was too easy LOL. This is what an Ultraman weekend looks like:Day 1: 10km ocean swim and a 145km bike ride.Day 2: 276-km bike ride.Day 3: 84-km run (double marathon). This is definitely an episode for the running and multi-sport nerds. But there are takeaways in this conversation for everyone. Including time management and how to get more out of yourself every day, and how you can change your situation if you aren’t happy with it and the importance of enjoying everything you do- and how that’s a mindset you can choose. As Simon says with his endurance events: “Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.”Thanks very much to my pals at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode:https://radixnutrition.co.nz/ Hosted on Acast.
