Christmas and Consumerism as Christians
There is no evidence that the disciples of Jesus, or the 1st Century church, ever celebrated Christmas or Jesus’ birth as an annual holiday. And yet, many of us have been taught that consumerism has killed the true meaning of Christmas. Has it?!
This week on the Lifeschool Podcast, we look at the history of Christmas, how it started, and when the holiday took on religious significance as we talk about Christmas and consumerism as Christians.
In This Episode You’ll Learn:
How many of our Christmas traditions got started.
When the Christian message and religion was added to the celebration.
The commercial roots of this annual holiday.
7+ ways you can still make Christmas about Jesus and the gospel.

From this episode:
“If anything, religion was grafted onto consumerism, rather than consumerism grafted onto religion. But who or what is the focus of our celebration? Are we using it as an opportunity to help others move from unbelief to belief about what is true of God and Jesus… and us?”

Neighborhood Missional Living for the Imperfectly Ready

This week on the Lifeschool Podcast, we talk with our friend Twyla Franz, a mother of three, as she shares a bit of her family’s journey into missional living. She’ll show us how to start taking baby steps in spite of being imperfectly ready.

Why being “imperfectly ready” is the perfect place to be.
Why proximity to those you are in community with is crucial.
How to make a habit of taking baby steps!
Get started here…
From this episode:
“You can lead a missional community and make disciples out of your home and in your neighborhood. This is not something for a magical, special few people who ‘crack the code’. It’s about being willing in spite of being imperfectly ready. It’s about taking little steps towards loving better, being a better neighbor, a better disciple-making-disciple.”

Gratitude, Grace, and the Gospel
Gratitude is more than delighting in a gift; it is a feeling of happiness directed toward a person for giving you something good. Growing in our ability to consistently be grateful and express gratitude is not only life-changing but is part of becoming a mature disciple of Jesus.
This week on the Lifeschool Podcast, we’ll look at the connection between gratitude, grace and the gospel. You’ll discover that expressing gratitude for the giver–not just the good gift–connects our hearts deeper to that person and is a picture of the gospel in and of itself.
Think of the godliest people you know, the people you most respect, other mature Believers you want to emulate and imitate. Almost certainly, the people you are thinking of are grateful people. Cynics, complainers, and critics may be popular on social media and late-night television, but they do not make great heroes of the faith.
In This Episode You’ll Learn:
How expressing gratitude actually changes us physically.
What a lack of gratitude and a tendency to focus on the negative leads to.
How even spending a few minutes with a truly grateful person changes lives.
Immediate, hand-held steps you can take to grow in expressing gratitude.
Get started here…
From this episode:
“God, in Christ, has given us all the most amazing and precious gift we will ever receive. Jesus gave us his own life, that we may be forgiven and set free. Let’s not just be grateful for that gift, but remember, we get to express our gratitude for, and to, the GIVER of such grace! How grateful, on a daily basis, are you for Jesus, the giver of such good gifts?”

Are You Living Like a Missionary?
Living as a missionary is more about “being” than “doing”. Even if you’re part of a church that only refers to missionaries as those who go overseas to do ministry, the truth is, if you are a Christian, YOU are a missionary. It’s part of your identity!
This week on the Lifeschool Podcast, we’ll talk about the reality of living our lives–right where we’re at–as missionaries. This is what the Bible teaches, and it’s the life you were created and saved to live. Buckle up…this is going to be amazing!
The Church was never meant to be a building out on the edge of town. Jesus intended us to be a people of love and service who live out and proclaim the good news of his kingdom–right where we live. God’s missionary family (us Christians) are intended to be woven into the very fabric of the culture, shouldering sin and pain in the lives of others.
In This Episode You’ll Learn:
Who the Bible calls “missionaries” or the “sent ones” in this life.
How our missionary identity flows right from the heart of our missionary God.
Why “Go and make disciples” was not a suggestion, but a command of Jesus.
How to get started living as a missionary right where you live today.
Get started here…
From this episode:
“I have to be honest with you here. After living this way for close to two decades now–like a localized missionary–I don’t think there is a huge difference between being a missionary here in America compared to living this way in a foreign country. People are people. The biggest difference here is that I constantly feel two things pulling at me; my past experience of “going to church” instead of being the church, and my lack of faith that the gospel is truly good news for everyone and everything.”

5 Steps To Making Friends Quickly
Friendship and relationships are inseparably connected to the heart of God. Not only were we all created in the image of our relational God, who exists in community, but making friends is a critical component to making new disciples of Jesus.
This week on the Lifeschool Podcast, we’ll teach you 5 steps to making friends quickly. We’ll show where to look, and give you the confidence to find new friendships and bridge those relationships into the rhythms of your normal life.
Most people don’t avoid making new friends, but are often distracted or fall into self-focused patterns for so long that they have missed many opportunities for real relationships with new people of peace that are right in front of them.
In This Episode You’ll Learn:
Why making new friends is not an “introvert vs. extrovert” issue.
Where to look for new friendships in places you already frequent.
How the lost art of being a good listener is key to this process–and discipleship.
5 steps you can begin to use immediately to make friends quickly.
Get started here…
From this episode:
“That home or apartment you have is a resource and meant to be shared with others. When you sense that certain people are “leaning in” to relationship and seem open to being your friend, invite them over for a simple meal, coffee or just to hang out and watch TV. This breaking of the wall of public and private is key to building relationships and trust. True friendships are not contained in social boxes…they eventually permeate our lives both public and private.”

Invitation and Challenge: Moving Disciples Toward Maturity
Whenever we’re investing time and energy into discipling someone or developing them as leaders, there’s this strong dynamic that we learn from Jesus where he perfectly calibrated invitation to his life, with a challenge to grow, to participate, to be more like him.
This week on the Lifeschool Podcast, we’ll teach you how understanding “Invitation and Challenge” can help you in your leadership, your parenting, and how it moves disciples toward maturity.
This concept of invitation and challenge is one that is surprisingly simple to understand and amazingly powerful when we master it.

Why learning to calibrate I&C will forever change your leadership and parenting.
Get started here…
From this episode:
“We can learn to “bank” invitation in people’s lives, and we “spend” those deposits as challenges that they can receive. If someone in your life is not stepping up to or accepting the challenge that you have presented them with, it may be that you need to “bank” more invitation, or the challenge is too much for the level of trust you have built up.”
