Living As a Friend Of Sinners

Often we let others' sin define them and divide us. But our ongoing involvement and relationship with others, especially those we think of as "sinners", begins with a profound grasp of God’s grace. In this episode of the Everyday Disciple Podcast, we'll see why Jesus came to be called a friend of sinners. And I'll share the journey we've been on to earn that same moniker for ourselves as we make disciples where we live. In This Episode You’ll Learn: The #1 thing we have in common with everyone else in life. How to know if you're a "clean" sinner or a "dirty" sinner. Why Jesus hung out with the outsiders and why we want to as well. How I came to be known as the Pub Pastor. 😄 Get started here… From this episode: "Christians will cite John 15:14 ('You are my friends if you do what I command.') as their justification for not wanting to hang out with those they see as "sinners". What a horrible example of proof-texting! The entire passage there has Jesus explaining how he loved his disciples and chose them while they were still jacked up and far from God. Can you imagine a parent saying that to their kids? 'You are only my child when you obey me. Otherwise I don’t love you.' What? That would be crazy. That is the exact opposite of the heart of our Father and his son Jesus." Each week the Big 3 will give you immediate action steps to get you started. Download today’s BIG 3 right now. Leading the Scattered Church on Mission

Everything that has happened in the past several months, especially social distancing restrictions, has scattered the Church back out into our neighborhoods and cities like never before. Is this a problem or an opportunity? In this episode of the Everyday Disciple Podcast, we’ll talk through the “what, why and how” of leading the scattered church on mission. Perhaps you've been placed in your position for such a time as this! In This Episode You’ll Learn:Why the Church was always meant to be a 'Gathered and Scattered' people. Why when we embrace more scattered, missional modes of being the Church, it greatly enhances our gathered experiences.3 foundational steps leaders need to be taking right now with their folks. An opportunity to get FREE discipleship tools and training that you can use in your context today.Get started here…From this episode:"The last forty years of Sunday services, biblical sermons, safe childcare, affinity-based small groups, and programs to fit any need are not producing the strain of Christians that have significantly changed the culture. We are doing better church services than we have in the past as a result of presentation-enhancing tools, yet we wonder if all our resources may actually be hindering our growth if growth is supposed to include depth of transformation."Each week the Big 3 will give you immediate action steps to get you started.Download today’s BIG 3 right now. How to Effectively Identify Your Next Leaders

Whether it’s in your church, non-profit, or missional community, if you are looking to grow, you’ll need to develop your next generation of leaders. How will you know who they are? There are certain qualities people exhibit that you can be looking for to identify the best and potentially most competent leaders. This week on the Lifeschool Podcast, we talk about how to effectively identify your next leaders. We'll show you what to look for and how to spot faithful, servant leaders that are right in your midst already. In This Episode You’ll Learn: Why models from the business world are not always good when looking for church leaders. How to start noticing the servant leaders you already have around you. Three questions to ask yourself to know who specifically to develop as leaders. 5 Qualities you want to look for in anyone you place in a position of leadership. Get started here… From this episode: "Competency is something that can be developed in any person who has character and capacity. In my experience, those with high capacity are continuous learners and develop new competencies all the time. I put competency at the end of the list because, to be honest, it is something of a “second-tier” concern. It matters, but not as much as the others."   Each week the Big 3 will give you immediate action steps to get you started. Download today’s BIG 3 right now. Read and think over them again later. The High Value of Asynchronous Discipleship

Building trust with others in person or online is key to making disciples of Jesus. Removing any barriers to the growth of these relationships is honoring to God. How might you begin to move past your own preferences, past experiences, or traditions to engage in new forms of discipleship?  This week on the Lifeschool Podcast, we talk about methods of asynchronous discipleship that are having a powerful impact on the way we interact as God's family on mission. Are you up for it? In This Episode You’ll Learn: Why online gatherings are not a "forsaking of the gathering of the saints." How God has always given us new ways to build relationships and stay connected. Ways that synchronous, asynchronous, and hybrid methods of discipleship are emerging. Powerful ideas for releasing more people into leadership. Get started here… From this episode: "I know there is some fear or pushback from certain people, often those who were not raised in the current online, social media, and social connection times we live in… they say that online relationships and interactions are not real relationships or that people hide their real self and only show the parts of them they want you to see. It turns out that there are actually some pretty startling advantages to all of this."   Each week the Big 3 will give you immediate action steps to get you started. Download today’s BIG 3 right now. Gospel, Community, Mission: Why We Need All 3

The idea that 'Gospel, Community and Mission' is crucial to making mature disciples of Jesus may sound a little bit obvious to you at first. But it is surprising how few of us, and our churches, are careful to balance the focus and engagement of these powerful discipleship foundations.  This week on the Lifeschool Podcast, we talk about why all three of these components must be consistently engaged in and balanced if we want disciples of Jesus to grow to full maturity. In This Episode You’ll Learn: Why we are seeing a lack of maturity in the Church today among Christians. How all 3... Gospel, Community, and Mission play a critical role in disciple-making. What it looks like when you only engage 2 of these 3 foundations with others. Practical resources for growing your people in Gospel, Community, and Mission. Get started here… From this episode: "It is when we are out on God’s mission together, interacting with and serving others that are not exactly like us… or don’t always agree with us or appreciate our lives and perspective... that’s when our own unbelief, selfishness, personal preferences etc. all surface… and can then have the gospel applied to those areas of our lives. That doesn’t happen sitting in an air-conditioned classroom, with lots of hot coffee and snacks in the back, us taking notes and nodding in agreement."   Each week the Big 3 will give you immediate action steps to get you started. Finding Your Value When “Doing” is Broken

So many of us are not getting to do the same jobs and the same tasks or shoulder the same responsibilities and important stuff as we had been doing before this pandemic hit or before our church services shut down. Our egos and self-worth may be taking a big hit. This week on the Lifeschool Podcast, we talk about finding your value when “doing” is gone or broken. Hint: where you find your true value and worth is not based on your performance… it’s based on the gospel! In This Episode You’ll Learn: Why we are all so wired to find our value from doing and performing. How our Gospel Identity guards us from performance-based spirituality. 7 signs that you may be suffering from the “DO to BE” distortion. 5 practical ways to begin to regain your perspective and manage the “newness” of your routine. Get started here… From this episode: “Your actions do not define who you are. God defines you, your value, and your identity. What you do does not equal who you are. We are defined by God and by our original image-bearing that’s now being restored in and through the work of Christ and the Holy Spirit in our lives. So your actions don’t define who you are, nor does your past jobs define your identity.”   Each week the Big 3 will give you immediate action steps to get you started. Our new normal will need new types of leaders! In This Episode You’ll Learn: Why the Church must move beyond just live-streaming our old norms. How our leaders were never equipped for the times we're entering into. Why our pastors need to move from being "experts" to being active "guides". Get started here… From this episode: "Next time you’re all together, face to face, online, or at home as a family, take out some bread and a cup of something delicious to drink.
