Shade Thomas-Fahm (b. 1933) is a pioneering Nigerian fashion designer who launched the nation's first high-end boutique selling locally-made ready-to-wear clothing in the 1960s. Julia de Burgos (1914-1953) was a celebrated Puerto Rican poet, feminist, and activist. She was known for her powerful, introspective writing on themes of identity, colonialism, and social justice. Her work highlighted the struggles of Puerto Rican women and the island's complex history. Her poetry continues to influence Latin American literature and feminist movements today. Rose O'Neill (1874-1944) was an American cartoonist, illustrator, artist, and writer. She rose to fame for her creation of the popular comic strip characters, Kewpies, in 1909. At one point, she was the highest paid female illustrator in America. Ahaha (fl. c.1870 BC) was one of the world’s earliest known businesswomen. Catherine I (1684-1727) was born a peasant before marrying the Tsar of Russia, Peter the Great. She eventually succeeded her husband as Empress of Russia. She ruled Russia from 1725 until her death in 1727.
