463 A Christmas Story (Full Episode)
On a very special episode of The Cine-Files, Steve Morris and John Rocha travel back in Santa's sleigh to 1983 to revisit and discuss the modern Christmas classic 'A Christmas Story' from director Bob Clark and starring Peter Billinglsey, Darren McGavin, and Melinda Dillon. Based on the book 'In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash' by Jean Shepherd with a screenplay by Shepherd, Clark and Leigh Brown, the film is presented in a series of vignettes, following a 9-year-old Ralphie Parker (Billingsley) and his family's misadventures in Northwest Indiana around the late 1930s or early 1940s. All Ralphie wants for Christmas is a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle. Ralphie's request is rebuffed by every adult, all of whom insist Ralphie will shoot his eye out. Will Ralphie get his wish or will he shoot his eye out? Leonard Maltin proclaimed the film "a top screen comedy". Roger Ebert initially gave the film three stars out of four, but later awarded the film four stars and added the film to his "Great Movies" list. Over the years, the film's critical reputation has grown considerably and it is regarded by some as one of the best films of 1983. In his book Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas, critic Alonso Duralde lists A Christmas Story in his chapter of "Christmas Classics". Steve and John go thru the movie scene by scene and break down the direction, acting, storylines, cinematography, score, themes, message, philosophical debates and more.AND JUST IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON, WE ARE RUNNING OUR FIRST EVER CHRISTMAS SPECIAL FOR NEW PATRONS. 462 Annie Hall (1977) Part 2
On this week's episode of The Cine-Files, Steve Morris and John Rocha continue their overdue tribute to the late and incredibly great Diane Keaton with Part 2 of their deep dive into 1977's 'Annie Hall'. The film stars Keaton and Woody Allen who also co-wrote and directed the movie. A satirical romantic comedy-drama with Allen as Alvy Singer, who tries to figure out the reasons for the failure of his relationship with the eponymous female lead, Annie Hall, a role Allen wrote specifically for Keaton. The film was nominated for the Big Five Academy Awards, winning four: the Academy Award for Best Picture, two for Allen (Best Director and, with Marshall Brickman, Best Original Screenplay), and Best Actress for Keaton who also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress that year. It ranks 31st on AFI's list of the 100 greatest films in American cinema. The film's screenplay was also named the funniest ever written by the Writers Guild of America in its list of the "101 Funniest Screenplays". It's also regarded by critics as a landmark "transitional" film in Allen's career, moving his work from more "accessible" and surreal parody towards more "naturalistic" comic filmmaking. Steve and John go thru the movie scene by scene and break down the direction, acting, storylines, cinematography, score, themes, message, philosophical debates and more.AND REMEMBER, WE ARE RUNNING OUR FIRST EVER CHRISTMAS SPECIAL FOR NEW PATRONS. The Cine-Files Presents BUSINESS HISTORY: Thomas Edison and the Movie Murder Mystery
Hello Cine-Files fans! Pushkin Industries, a podcast company we are sure you are all familiar with, reached out to ask us to help with the launch of their new show Business History. Former Planet Money hosts Jacob Goldstein and Robert Smith examine the surprising stories of businesses big and small, bringing to life the greatest innovations, the boldest entrepreneurs and the craziest mavericks in the archives of commerce and finance. They sent us an episode that fits with our conversations on movies. It details Thomas Edison's role in the mysterious disappearance of the true inventor of the movie camera. The man who invented the movie camera got on a train in France in 1890 and was never seen again. The wife of Louis Le Prince thought she knew who’d ordered her husband’s disappearance and presumed murder - Thomas Alva Edison. Many people were simultaneously racing to develop moving pictures - so had Edison decided to bump off his closest rival so he could win? The story of who deserves the credit for the movies is a murky one - involving bitter betrayal, courtroom drama and soft-core porn.We hope you enjoy it. If you do, find more tales of founders, business success, and spectacular failures on Business History, available on YouTube, Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get podcasts.Don’t forget to support The Cine-Files at https://www.patreon.com/TheCineFilesPurchase any film we feature at https://www.cine-files.netFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheCineFilesPod/?ref=bookmarkThis episode is sponsored by/brought to you by the following sponsors:HIMS.
