The welcoming crisis - with Peter Mayrick and Jessica Brouwer

There’s a key problem in Sydney’s Anglican churches with a drop in the number of newcomers. The trend is downwards across the board. It’s massively concerning. In 2013, the Diocesan mission set a goal to raise the number of newcomers to Church to 12% by 2020. However, as of September 2019, it is looking like we will fall well short of this goal. There’s a new report out this week, featuring interviews with churches that are overall doing better at welcoming first time newcomers and welcoming returnees to church life. We have a vulnerable/soft underbelly conversation about our weaknesses with Peter Mayrick from Sydney’s Center for Ministry Development and Jessica Brouwer, Mission Pastor at Village Church, Sydney. You can download the report here - http://www.j.mp/newcomerreport - or contact Peter for implementation advice email Peter.Mayrick@cmd.trainingThe Church Cothechurchco.com is a website and app platform built specifically for churches.  Advertise on The Pastor's HeartTo advertise on The Pastor's Heart go to thepastorsheart.net/sponsorSupport the show

‘A virus in the Australian national church’ - Sydney Archbishop Glenn Davies calls out revisionist mavericks

Sydney Archbishop Glenn Davies shares openly about Weeping for the city of Sydney like Jesus wept over Jerusalem. His surprise to be speaking at public rallies against the extreme changes to the NSW laws surrounding abortion. How seriously flawed the bill is, and how deceptive and politically expedient the manner of it’s presentation has been. On the sexuality crisis in the Australian Anglican Church, Dr Davies :-says the rupture of the Anglican Church in Australia has begun, with a virus in national church, caused by not teaching properly the word of God.described the actions of the Bishop of Wangaratta as a maverick ‘last harrah’.labeled the ‘marriage’ of two male priests from Wangaratta as sinful.says he’s honoured to be attending Bishop elect Jay Behan’s consecration next month in New Zealand.suggests Jay Behan might give pastoral oversight to confessing Anglicans in Australia who want to break with their revisionist diocese. Finally Dr Davies reflects on his own time as Archbishop in the lead up to his final Synod. Dr Davies says he’s been inspired by the boldness of Paul, and is so thankful for those many people who have prayed for him.The Church Cothechurchco.com is a website and app platform built specifically for churches.  Advertise on The Pastor's HeartTo advertise on The Pastor's Heart go to thepastorsheart.net/sponsorSupport the show

An Aussie diocese chooses apostasy. How to react? - with Kanishka Raffel

The synod of the Australian diocese of Wangaratta, Victoria has decided to walk a path that stands in opposition to the teaching of the bible, defies the theology of the national church and rejects the agreement of the national bishops council.Kanishka Raffel is Anglican Dean of Sydney and a member of the council of Gafcon Australia. Dean Raffel has told Dominic Steele on The Pastor’s Heart that the decisions by Bishop Parkes' Wangaratta diocese parallel those made by revisionists in the New Westminster diocese in Canada, which precipitated the formation of parallel Anglican expressions.Decisions similar to those in Wangaratta have ended up splitting the Anglican Church in Canada, the United States, Scotland and New Zealand.Dean Raffel says to seek to bless something that God says is not blessed, is not the religion of Christ. ****See further:Statement from Gafcon Australia on Wangaratta, 9 September 2019Regional synod vote ignores clear words of Scripture - Archbishop Glenn Davies Wangaratta Defies National Church by Kanishka Raffel (writing in the Australian Church Record, Spring JournalUpdate 11.9.2019: After our discussion was uploaded, the Albury Border Mail reported that the liturgy for blessing parties to a same-sex marriage will not be used this Saturday due to a legal challenge, but quoted Bishop Parkes as saying it was just, ‘a delay, rather than an abandonment.'The Church Cothechurchco.com is a website and app platform built specifically for churches.  Advertise on The Pastor's HeartTo advertise on The Pastor's Heart go to thepastorsheart.net/sponsorSupport the show

Fishing and living in Babylon with David Robertson & Stephen McAlpine

“It’s never been more hostile, but it’s never been more open” - David RobertsonMy conversation with Stephen McAlpine and David Robertson was enlightening. They argued that the experience of being Christian today is the experience of Daniel, living in Babylon. Rather than despair, Steve and David say there is lots which Christian leaders can do to equip teens, uni students and young workers to “stand up in the gale” or “ride the wave”. They challenge Christian leaders to stop focusing on creating Churches which shelter young Christians, and instead to work at emboldening our congregations to share the confronting truth of Jesus. They also gave some great strategies for how to do that. Some of their strategies were surprising - like relying on a liturgical framework, or showing the history of the Church - and some were all about building community. The Church Cothechurchco.com is a website and app platform built specifically for churches.  Advertise on The Pastor's HeartTo advertise on The Pastor's Heart go to thepastorsheart.net/sponsorSupport the show

The Principal of Queensland’s Theological College Gary Millar joins Dominic Steele to talk about transformation in the Christian life, the subject of Sydney’s Moore College’s annual lectures.  What is change?  Where do we misunderstand it?  How do people claim for too much change, and on the other hand, how do we expect too little?  Do people change in the Old Testament?  New Testament?  What are the many ways in which change happens? The Church Cothechurchco.com is a website and app platform built specifically for churches.  Advertise on The Pastor's HeartTo advertise on The Pastor's Heart go to thepastorsheart.net/sponsorSupport the show

A deeply personal conversation with Ed Shaw on celibacy, intimacy and how Churches can care for the same sex attracted

"Most of all I want a transparently biblical vision of inclusion to be shaping how the church welcomes and accepts me - rather than the ever-changing views of society around me. I don’t want to be included on the basis that cultural attitudes have changed but on the basis of the timeless Gospel that Jesus Christ self-sacrificially brought into this world," - Ed Shaw.Today, in the lead up to the Liberty Conference, Ed Shaw is our guest as we tackle four key words: orientation, identity, change and origins. Ed is a pastor at Emmanuel City Bristol UK and is a founder of www.livingout.org. He speaks about his personal journey of faith, what it means to be included because of the Gospel and how we can create biblically faithful inclusive churches. The Church Cothechurchco.com is a website and app platform built specifically for churches.  Advertise on The Pastor's HeartTo advertise on The Pastor's Heart go to thepastorsheart.net/sponsorSupport the show
