A problem we've been fiddling with in the interoperability landscape is this idea behind achieving maximum extensibility with regards to the creation of hundreds of new chains. We know that if there's going to be an overwhelming amount of chains, we need solutions that are permissionless and easy to spin up on new chains. For today's podcast, we sat down with Catalyst CTO Alexander, to discuss this situation and more. We talked about the concept of the unit of liquidity, which enables asynchronous asset swaps between different pools on different chains. We went on to discuss the best way to tackle the N-squared problem in which traditional cross-chain solutions require each chain to know the state of every other chain. We went on to talk about the idea of logic-dependent swaps, which allow for condition-based transactions. These swaps can be set to execute only if specific conditions are met, opening up novel use cases for onchain users. Catalyst is already live on the mainnet with three OP stack chains: Blast, OP, and Base, with plans to extend to more ecosystems over time. As the cross-chain landscape continues to evolve, with more app-specific chains emerging, Catalyst is aiming to solve this extensibility dilemma to address the challenges of scaling horizontally, in an interoperable way. There's quite a bit of conversation ongoing in the zeitgest of the modular research community. We tend to lean into technical topics more than the flavor of the day, but for this episode we managed to do both. We were joined by Alejo Pinto, one of the founders of Lumio, to discuss their modular VM abstraction framework, enabling developers to build and deploy apps everywhere, as well as the state of sequencing and composability in the space. Lumio supports popular VMs like SVM, Move VM, and Parallel EVM, enabling applications to be deployed across various execution environments. This framework is designed to simplify life for devs by maintaining full compatibility with these VMs without requiring any code changes, thus promoting a "build-once-deploy-anywhere" philosophy. This is pretty aligned with the modular thesis of build whatever, as well as a core pillar, optionality. During our conversation with Alejo, we also touched on the hot topic of composability. Alejo shared his views on the debate between synchronous atomic composability and asynchronous environments, highlighting the tradeoffs between having a single global state machine like Solana versus a modularized scaling system. One significant aspect of Lumio's work is its approach to shared and decentralized sequencers. Alejo emphasized the role of shared sequencing in optimizing crosschain messaging and contract calls, and highlighted the ongoing research and development in this area with projects like Espresso. The C.A.K.E framework established that chain abstraction is a collaborative effort, and not a one winner takes all situation. This idea for how the intents and chain abstraction stack works was originally created by Frontier Research and now there is a C.A.K.E working group. Since then, they have also spun off a new project called OneBalance focusing on credible accounts and achieving the chain abstraction experience. We were joined by Stephane, an ex-Flashbots team, and now leading the OneBalance team. We talked about their focus on developing a chain abstracted stack via credible accounts and resource locks. These innovations prevent double-spending and make secure cross-chain messaging possible without the need to lock assets on the source chain. Collaboration is at the heart of OneBalance's mission, along with other chain abstraction contributors. Rather than replacing existing wallet infrastructure like MetaMask or Rabby, OneBalance aims to integrate its credible account capabilities into them to make the transition for users easier. We asked how Stephane sees OneBalance getting traction and what the process would be like for active users to switch to their solution. We also discussed the role that solver networks play in the chain abstraction ecosystem, executing transactions on behalf of users and ensuring fast fills. We discussed the permissionless access, speed, and price optimization properties of solver networks, which allows them to tackle the "order flow trilemma". We also talked about MEV and local consensus towards the end, and uncovered a bold thesis from Stephane...His vision? Every validator and user account to operate as its own rollup. The acceleration of ZK is happening at a rapid pace. Last week we covered the collaboration between Succinct and AggLayer on the proof generation side using SP1, a generalized ZKVM. Today, we're excited to share insights from our recent chat with RJ and Mauro from Aligned Layer, the other half to the ZK puzzle focused on verifying proofs. RJ and Mauro have deep roots in engineering and cryptography, originally honed at Lambda Class. Aligned is on a mission to accelerate the Ethereum roadmap. By making ZK proofs more accessible and affordable for developers, they are building out the first verification layer. We had a lot of questions for these guys. One of them was around Aligned’s approach to verifcation with a stateless architecture, meaning they aren't building their own but instead focus solely on proof verification. We asked about centralization concerns and also managing their consensus as a network. They are doing this as an Eigenlayer AVS, utilizing the economic security of Ethereum. We also asked them straight up how many proofs per second they can verify currently and why their "complete verification" system is superior to others. We discussed why proof aggregation is so important to their setup as well. Towards the end, we discussed the ways Aligned is aiming to reduce the cost of reading proofs on Ethereum as well as developing more efficient aggregation methods. They are committed to integrating with the broader Ethereum ecosystem, working with LRT providers and other partners to enhance economic security and network adoption. There's been a lot going on in the zeitgest with regards to based rollups, pre-confirmations, MEV, and whether or not based rollups are going to make it in the longer term. We're about to find out. In today's podcast, we were joined by Taiko's founder Daniel Wang, to discuss their "permissionless based rollup" which allows unrestricted block proposals and proofs. One of the challenges Taiko faces is the higher cost associated with base rollups compared to centralized sequencers due to the onchain protocol rules. Daniel explained that profitability is achievable as their transaction volumes grow. Currently, transaction fees on Taiko are minimal. We discussed the gradual decentralization of Taiko’s long-term vision. They aim to give up most of their control from a block proposing POV within a year, aligning with Ethereum’s core ethos and principles. In addition, we discussed the move Taiko is exploring with plans to launch their Base Boosted Rollup (BBR) and integrate ZK proofs by Q3. Is ZK real? Unironically, this was the first question Robbie asked our guests Uma Roy, founder of Succinct & Brendan Farmer, co-founder of Polygon. If you've been following the latest developments in ZK (but not trademarked), you'll know that it is the closest thing to the endgame of crypto. However, you'll also know the progress has been somewhat slow as its not a trivial task to build zk circuits and logic. Enter: Succinct & generalizable ZKVMs. SP1 is the rust-based zkVM built Succinct allowing developers to write standard Rust code and leverage ZK technology seamlessly. Uma and co have been making insane strides in reducing the costs of generating zk proofs while other teams are meticulously working on proof verification improvements. We had the pleasure of exploring the collaboration between AggLayer and Succinct, which is using SP1 to bring practical zk to production. AggLayer is specifically designed to tackle Ethereum's fragmentation problem by enabling asset fungibility and low-latency interoperability across different L2 chains. The big innovation here is Plonky 3 as well as the idea behind Pessismistic proofs. Everclear, formerly known as Connext, recently launched with a fresh focus as the Clearing Layer aiming to solve the ever-present modular fragmentation problem. Today we talked with Arjun Bhuptani, about their history coining the term "chain abstraction", building an intents-based bridge, and now working to collaborate with the intents and solver community. With Everclear, they are focusing on the clearing layer and chain abstraction stack. We discussed the critical challenges of liquidity management for intent protocols and solvers and how to solve these by enabling solvers to net out their flows between chains, reducing the need for frequent rebalancing and lower interoperability costs. This approach not only makes it easier for solvers to operate across multiple chains but also addresses the centralization risks present in the solver landscape. This centralization and single-solver dominance is something we've been thinking about at The Rollup so it was nice to hear Arjun's POV on handling this situation. Overall, we've seen the market for intent-based protocols and solvers expand dramatically, and Everclear's clearing layer is designed to thrive in this landscape. But, can they do what they set out to and get the "buy-in" from the right players? We asked Arjun and he answered this, and the centralization question with ease. The other big issue we brought up is the extensibility problem faced by many interoperability protocols, where they cannot scale to 'infinite' separate environments because of their infra constraints...we also asked Arjun how Everclear is able to scale as the number of chains grows. Lots of good tidbits. Currently, the project is live on testnet, with plans to finalize their dutch auction system for pricing and netting. Sovereignty or interoperability. Your choice, anon. In the recent zeitgest of crypto builders has been the idea of achieving sovereignty while also keeping interoperability. Today, we’re diving into this with Avi Zurlo, Chief Product Officer of =nil; Foundation. For this conversation, we had a focus on sharding and how =nil; Foundation is approaching this choice. Since its inception, =nil; Foundation has been a key player in low-level cryptographic infrastructure, focusing heavily on ZK technology. With innovative products like ZK LLVM and a ZK proof marketplace, =nil; is all in on building a scalable ZK rollup, based on zkSharding. In this pod, we explore the important distinctions between sharding and rollup-centric scaling. We also discuss horizontal scaling, distributing workloads across multiple machines, and scaling without sacrificing decentralization (and of course, interoperability). As large believers and proponents of the modular thesis, we (along with other voices in the space) have identified fragmentation as a kink in the armor of modularity. We think chain abstraction solves a lot, if not _all_ of this subpar user experience. Chain abstraction is all about making the user experience seamless. It is an experience itself. In today’s podcast with Ethan, devrel at Particle Network, we explored the definition of chain abstraction, where Particle fits, as well as the three core components of chain abstraction: blockchain-level, account-level, and application-level solutions. Blockchain-level abstraction involves infrastructure solutions like AggLayer and Superchain, which provide shared security and unified bridging. Account-level abstraction, where Particle plays a major role, focuses on creating universal accounts that unify account states and balances across chains, giving users one address and one balance usable on any chain. Application-level abstraction allows developers to create chain-agnostic applications, orchestrating cross-chain workflows seamlessly (think Agoric, Socket, and others). We discussed the idea behind universal accounts, which leverage account abstraction to provide a unified balance and address across all chains. Finally, we discussed the Particle Network which is a Cosmos SDK based L1 which aims to maintain state parity across chains, ensuring secure and efficient transaction execution. We discussed their native token and the role it will play in this ecosystem. We are pretty bullish on future of chain abstraction as we believe it’s the next logical step in modularity, and crypto as a whole.
