Give Me Context or Give Me Death by PowerPoint! With Special Guests Belen & Gus

This week Brent and Chris change it up, bringing on two special guests - Gus Prestera and Belen Bilgic-Schneider. Belen and Gus share stories from the instructional design trenches, where they have been able to transform content design into a search for meaning by leveraging the power of critical incidents, stories, examples, non-exemplars, conversations, artifacts, scenarios, and cases. In other words, by putting context ahead of all other concerns, including content, interactivity, and aesthetics, instructional designers can architect more meaning-FULL learning experiences for their audiences, packing a greater learning punch, reducing time-to-proficiency, and maximizing return on learning investments. Once you buy into the idea that Context should be in charge, next comes the question of how you change the dynamic with your subject matter experts and stakeholders. We’ll talk about simple content gathering techniques you can start using immediately. Gus Prestera is an organizational effectiveness consultant, educator, and coach. He supports innovative HR and business leaders who are transforming their workforce, making big changes to how they engage, manage and develop their people. He has over 20 years of human capital management experience. Through his consulting firm, Prestera FX, Gus and his team have helped change agents improve employee engagement, capabilities and performance in mid- to large-sized businesses, including AIG, Endo Pharmaceuticals, Johnson & Johnson, Main Line Health, Dialight, and Bristol-Myers Squibb. Gus holds a PhD in Education, with a minor in Management, and an MBA, frequently speaks at local and national industry events, and regularly facilitates skill-building workshops for HR and business leaders. He is an advisory board member for American University’s Human Resources Analytics and Management MS program and has taught graduate-level courses at Penn State University and American University. Learn more about Gus on his LinkedIn. https://www.linkedin.com/in/gusprestera/ Belen Schneider is a creative director and consultant, basing her work around communications, instructional design, performance and training projects, RFPs, multimedia production and more. Belen has been a Partner at RnD Interactive since 2009, a creative director and instructional designer at Prestera, and a self-employed consultant for interactive courseware and communications since 2012. Belen has experience from all around the L&D field, giving her a great overall perspective on business efficiency and performance. Is 2019 the year that inclusive design goes mainstream? With Special guest Tanya Seidel

During this episode of IDIODC, the gang brings on special guest Tanya Seidel to chat inclusive design and accessibility. Inclusive design and ensuring courses are accessible to people with disabilities should not be an afterthought. With organizations like Microsoft putting a priority on inclusive design with all of their products, including their product packaging, a new bar is being set for expectations around accessibility and it's time for the e-learning community to follow suit. Historically, accessible e-learning has been categorized as having to be static and limited on engagement. It doesn't have to be! But, many of the rapid e-learning tools that are available today don't always make it easy on developers. So what can we do? Something is better than nothing, and even if you're not obligated to adhere to Section 508, you can take at least some steps to help make your courses accessible to people with disabilities. This session will focus on some of the easier things you can do in development that have a big impact on a course's accessibility. Tanya is the VP of Finance and Technology at Artisan E-Learning and has close to 15 years of experience in the e-learning industry. In addition to managing Artisan’s finance, technology, and marketing landscapes, she is involved in the development and delivery of e-learning courses for a variety of clients and is well-versed in accessibility (Section 508 and WCAG), usability, and responsive design. Tanya spent more than seven years working for Trivantis, the makers of Lectora. She has been involved in creating instructor-led and web-based training programs and materials, but also in leading the design and development of e-learning authoring software and Learning Management Systems. Check out Artisan E-Learning's blog here: https://artisanelearning.com/blog/ You can learn more about Tanya on her LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tanyaseidel/ Become virtual friends with the IDIODC gang on twitter (and remember you can always stay in the loop with the #IDIODC hashtag): Tanya: @TanyaSeidel https://twitter.com/tanyaseidel Brent: @BSchlenker https://twitter.com/bschlenker Chris: @Chris_V_W https://twitter.com/Chris_V_W Brent Schlenker is dominKnow's Community Manager. Ruthlessly Relevant - How Can We Engage The Modern Learner?

In time of overloaded schedules, smartphones and on-demand resources everywhere, it is getting more and more difficult to get through to our learners. L&D programs need to be ruthlessly relevant in today’s world. We have to focus on the performance-outcomes and work our way backwards to create learning experiences that stick. One way to achieve this is to take a page out of the marketing playbook and use time-tested tools and techniques to create relevant and engaging content. This week Brent and Chris bring on special guest Bianca Baumann to chat ways to increase engagement amongst learners! Check out this helpful link from Jeff Kortenbosch on questions to ask before talking about making learners in an organization successful via engaging techniques. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/hey-ld-professional-you-asking-right-questions-jeff-kortenbosch/ Bianca is a curious, self-driven and results-focused professional with 10+ years in the Education field. She is a consultant on learning solutions and leverage data to make learning stick, personalized and delivered just-in-time. Bianca has a mix of education, digital marketing and customer success experience. She's not one for the LMS, seat-time or the next button. Challenging the status quo, Bianca asks the tough questions in order to bring L&D into this century, leaving behind old learning styles that don't work. Reading Digital Body Language - It's the New A in Your ADDIE Model: With Special Guest Jo Cook

In the past, teachers were responsible for “reading the room” and “getting a feel” for how learners were responding. But todays technologies help us discover more about them through their digital body language. Digital Body Language is more than just how you look on your webcam. That’s analog body language as seen through the webcam lens…and it’s important. But did you know that everything you do online tells us…them…someone… a little more about you and what your needs are, or might be? This has been the realm of digital marketing for decades, but it’s important to instructional designers as well. The learning experiences we create are part of a larger learning experience for the user. They may attend a virtual classroom session, take a self-paced eLearning course, and consume short videos to refresh the learning. And they’ll also be joining communities and chatting with peers about the same content. All of those contribute to learning and using analytics we can use data to discover what they need. Jo Cook is a speaker, instructional designer and classroom facilitator who specializes in virtual classrooms, webinars and live online learning technology. Jo’s passion is in helping and supporting teams, professionals and organizations embrace the benefits of the virtual classroom. Through her company Lightbulb Moment, Jo has specialized in training learning professionals about virtual classroom design and delivery since 2013 and has spoken on various topics at conferences such as Learning Technologies, Online Educa Berlin and keynoted for Colleges Wales and E-learning Fusion. Jo is also part-time is the Deputy Editor of Training Journal magazine and website and her background include: further and higher education; the charity sector; small and large organizations, including CNN News and Bupa International.
