We've had a chance to talk with many instructional designers on IDIODC over the last 2 years. And most instructional designers are "ALL IN" on the trend in design thinking. But what if I told you the trend is actually not even a thing to be trending? This week we're talking with a UX/UI expert who specializes in improving the customer experience. She has a few strong opinions about design thinking and why it's not a thing. With the average shelf life of an employee’s skills at less than five years, it is imperative that organizations support their employees in staying current in new and emerging skills and in learning how to learn. We've all been using the traditional ADDIE model for Instructional design for so long that most of us probably follow the model without even thinking about it. Video-based learning is on the rise... and has been since the launch of YouTube in 2005. Mobile devices, apps, and social media, are some of the drivers behind this trend. It's a tech trend in businesses with cautiously curious executives wondering how to use it as a competitive advantage.  There are many opportunities for training departments. But there are also legal and IT concerns. And despite the fact that's video is cheaper than ever to produce and deliver, there are still concerns over hidden costs of file storage and internal bandwidth costs. The good news is that all of the concerns associated with video-based learning can be solved. As an industry our first step is to learn how we can keep our video production skills current with these modern capabilities. Cartoons, sitcoms, dramas, and even the commercials brought me joy. Then I found interactive storytelling. I used joysticks and direction pads to discover plot twists and adrenaline-fueled battles. Movies, TV, videogames, I couldn’t get enough, but my heart was drawn to the lifestyle of the teacher. I wanted to learn the ways of my father. I chose education over communications and earned my way to Master Teacher. Leading teams of teachers, parents, and of course padawans,²  I furthered my quest. I learned that many of the “truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.”³ My POV changed. Returning to the ways of the Jedi, I chose to embody the adage: “Do or do not, there is no try.” ⁴   I became a Digital Storyteller. Writing, producing, shooting, and editing, I found my Road Back.⁵ After sharpening my skills to a position of leadership, it was time to leap. Today, my passion is finding ways to help people learn how to use video for learning purposes. Technology advancements are rapidly forcing corporate learning leaders to rethink their internal L&D strategies. You've probably heard about Learning Experience Platforms but have you ever thought about being a learning experience designer? It's not a new term or title, but we often blend conversations about experience design into instructional design. Perhaps it's time we talk about it as something different. Instructional design served us well for over 50 years and perhaps it should be replaced by Learning Experience Design. None of us have all the answers, but it's going to be a fun conversation to have with Jeff Tillett.  Jeff is experienced with technology, and solving business problems through the training function within the Fortune 500.
