BONUS: 10 Books in my To Read pile + listener recommendations!

This episode is for you if you can never get enough book talk. This Best Books lately episode ran longer than I expected and I didn't have time to tell you about all the awesome books in my MASSIVE To Read pile. I chose 10 of the books waiting on my kindle or on my bedside to share with you, and then listed the rest over on the blog. (You can find my full To Read list here.) I love hearing what YOU'RE reading lately, and so the last few minutes of this bonus episode includes listener recommendations, straight from their own mouths. So now my To Read pile is somehow larger than it was before I recorded this... * Full show notes for this episode here.   @10ThingsToTellYou on Instagram   @10ThingsToTellYou on facebook   Join the 10 Things Connection Group on FB   Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 54: Best Books Lately with Jessica Turner + A Conversation about American Dirt with Stephanie Newman-Smith

This episode is for you if you love to read (and follow literary controversies).  Book episodes are the best episodes! We spend the first half hour talking about the best books we've read lately with Jessica Turner, and we take a brief detour to talk about #Bookstagram and our current reading habits (including a new hobby Jessica picked up and the #ReadYourBooks challenge she's hosting online).  In the second half of this extra long episode, I'm joined by my real-life book club friend Stephanie Newman-Smith to talk through the layers of controversy around the novel American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins. We talk about who can tell what stories, how the publishing industry is complicit in silencing non-white voices, and the bizarre marketing missteps around the novel that Oprah picked for her book club.  This episode is sponsored by Glossier. Ep 53: Whose voice is inside your head?

This episode is for you if you struggle with negative self-talk. A lot of have a critical voice in our head telling us all sorts of ugly things that lead to second-guessing and self-doubt. But where did that voice originate? Did it come from a parent? An old coach or similar authority figure from your youth? An ex?  On this episode, I'm sharing about the critical voices in MY head and why identifying them (instead of struggling to ignore them) is helpful to squash them for good.  This episode is sponsored by Glossier. This little exercise can bring immediate clarity when we're lost in a sea of Pro/Con lists and justifications.  On this episode, I'm sharing how this has applied to my own life, especially when I lost myself for a bit in my mid-thirties.  This episode is sponsored by SKILLSHARE. Ep 49: Where are your bandaids?

This episode is for you if you're using a flimsy bandaid over something that needs stitches. Metaphorically.  On this episode I'm sharing three ways in which I have used a bandaid to cover up something that really needed more attention: a medical problem, a relationship strain, and a frustration in the house.  Sponsored by SKILLSHARE. Ep 48: Should we post our kids on social media? (A conversation with Nish Weiseth)

This episode is for you if you’ve ever second-guessed posting photos of your kids online. Nish Weiseth - a friend I met through mommy blogging years ago - recently posted on Instagram that she was going to take a step back from posting her family online, because her kids are getting older and she started questioning her own motivations. I thought her take was really interesting, so I reached out and asked her to have a friend-to-friend conversation on this topic…publicly. The first half of this episode is about posting photos of our kids and why our thoughts have changed on it over the years, and the second half turns towards why we post online at all. We get really honest and vulnerable, but we don’t come to any conclusions. I get on my high horse at one moment and then admit I might be wrong. I hope our conversation inspires you to ask your friends and coparents about their feelings on posting family pics online, and their genuine motivation for posting on social media at all. BONUS: Intentions, Affirmations, & Vision Boards, Oh my!

This episode is for you if you’re thinking about setting intentions, starting affirmations, and creating a vision board for the new year. On this episode, I’m sharing my (relatively recent) experience with setting intentions, writing down affirmations, and creating a vision board. Let me be clear that I no expert on any of these things, but I do believe that something goes on in your consciousness when you stay open to receiving what the world has to offer (instead of closing yourself off from anything you don’t understand), and by putting in place a few practices that might positively affect your mood, spirit, and actions.
