AtHome's Remarkable Growth Story with Lee Bird, CEO

Our special guest this week is Lee Bird, CEO of AtHome, the Home Decor Superstore that has experienced phenomenal growth in recent years growing to nearly 250 stores in 40 states. Lee brings a wealth of experience to his current role, having held leadership positions at a few brands you might have heard of, including Nike, Gap, Old Navy, and Ford. We dig deep into AtHome's incredible transformation from Garden Ridge, a struggling regional chain, to a re-branded national powerhouse. Lee takes us through the testing and customer insight that drove the new vision and re-concepting, while detailing the foundational elements that have provided critical to their success. We also explore the lessons learned from the pandemic and how AtHome is navigating current challenges with the supply chain, inflation and labor shortages. But first we kick-off our jam-packed episode with some personal news, celebrating Steve's book being selected as a Kindle Monthly Deal. For a limited time only you can buy the ebook version of Remarkable Retail: How to Win & Keep Customers in the Age of Disruption for just $1.99 in both the United States and Canada. We also congratulate Michael on his Voice of Retail podcast reaching the 300 episode mark. Then we briefly recap Steve's whirlwind tour of new store concepts in the DC area, including Bloomie's (Bloomingdale's new small store format), Amazon Fresh and the first Whole Foods Store featuring Amazon's "Just Walk Out" technology. We move on to dissect the hot retail news of the week, including Amazon's very disappointing earnings, "the death of irony"--also know as Meta's new physical store designed to sell the Metaverse--before pondering whether the merging of a slightly better than average retailer (Kohl's) with a struggling one (JC Penney) makes any sense whatsoever.  About UsSteve Dennis is an advisor, keynote speaker and author on strategic growth and business innovation. The Myth of the Great E-Commerce Acceleration

“The future is already here, it's just not very distributed.”- William GibsonEver since the pandemic began, the narrative of a great acceleration in online shopping has taken hold, with some even claiming that we experienced 10 years of e-commerce growth in a matter of months. While many markets did see a huge surge in e-commerce penetration during the height of physical store lockdowns, it turns out that facts are stubborn things. In reality we are almost exactly where we would have been had the Covid crisis not hit. In this episode, with Michael weighing in from the SIAL conference in Montreal, we challenge yet another overly simplistic narrative that, had you bought into it, might have caused you to do precisely the opposite of what you should have done. We also learn that, contrary to popular belief, Steve is not a hype man for physical retail, but rather devoutly anti bullsh*t.What's really going on with online shopping growth, why your mileage may vary, and why we often get so much wrong about e-commerce are at the heart of this deep dive. But first we open up with the retail news that caught our attention this week, including Lululemon's 5-year plan to double their revenue, Uniqlo's plans to open 400-500 new stores in the continuing rejection of all the retail apocalypse nonsense, and what to make of the departure of Old Navy's CEO (and Gap's overall lack of remarkability). We also unpack the interesting trend of the D getting taken out of DTC as more disruptor brands choose to explore wholesale distribution. Plus, in our very popular everything old is new again segment: the return of print catalogs! The McKinsey ArticleThe Quickening The WSJ ArticleThe Pandemic Was Supposed To Push All Shopping Online. The Store As Brand Hub with Target SVP Nancy King

Our guest this week is Nancy King, SVP, Product Engineering at Target who shares the remarkable story of her company's journey to omni-channel--or is it harmonized?--leadership. This episode provides a deep-dive, insider's perspective on how Target has embraced the blur of modern retail and put their stores at the center of the guest experience. We get a fascinating behind the scenes look at how the application of agile methodology, combined with digital technology and a willingness to experiment aggressively, has driven break-through results. We also explore how Target knew to invest in these areas ahead of the COVID crisis and what their plans are to stay in sync with ever escalating customer needs and wants. But first we unpack the hot retail news of the week, including Amazon CEO Andy Jassey's first letter to shareholders and the company's plans to get serious (at long last) about product returns. Then we do a few quick hits--Kohl's take-over talks, K-mart's last gasps and the retail industry's resale curiosity --before lamenting over the train wreck that was Bed, Bath & Beyond's recent quarterly earnings. Steve also riffs a bit on the pointless pursuit of promiscuous shoppers. About NancyAuthentic, progressive engineering leader with 20+ year’s hands on experience in Fortune 100 IT organizations solving the hardest problems. No Cake For You!: Celebrating Remarkable Retail's Birthday with special guest Sucharita Kodali

“I think it’s terribly dangerous for an artist to fulfill other people’s expectations. If you feel safe in the area that you’re working in, you’re not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel you’re capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth. And when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about in the right place to do something exciting.”—  David Bowie,  David Bowie: The Last Five Years On the 1st anniversary of the release of the revised and expanded 2nd edition of Steve's best-selling book Remarkable Retail: How to Win & Keep Customers in the Age of Disruption--which confusingly is also the 2nd anniversary of the 1st edition's release--we celebrate its success and impact with our very special guest Forrester Research VP & Principal Analyst Sucharita Kodali.  Sucharita is not only one of retail's top thought leaders, but she was our very first guest on the podcast back in September of 2022 and she graciously wrote the Foreword to Remarkable Retail's 2nd edition. We unpack some of the key lessons from the book and take stock of Steve and Sucharita's predictive prowess. We also wonder aloud about whether there is complacency setting in among too many retailers, if a "collapse of the unremarkable middle" is inevitable and whether certain oft talked about "innovations" are victims of the hype cycle. But first examine the retail news of the week that caught our attention, including trying to be glass is half full on JC Penney's new strategy to "love the customers that love us." We then move on to marvel at Shein's stratospheric $100 billion valuation, before weighing in on whether the Neiman Marcus Group's new partnership is rather Farfetched (see what we did there?). We close with our take on what to make of Walmart's bold moves to deal with trucking shortages.  Note: The John Oliver "This Week Tonight" segment referenced in the episode can be found here. And don't forget to check out our bonus episode recapping this year's Shoptalk conference, recorded live from high above the Vegas Strip.  About SucharitaSucharita serves digital business strategy professionals. Stepping Out in Style with Crocs President Michelle Poole

Our guest this week is Michelle Poole, President of Crocs. As Crocs celebrates its 20th anniversary we dig into the remarkable growth story behind the increasingly iconic footwear company. We address head-on the polarizing (or is it fundamentally under-estimated?) nature of the brand and how Michelle has turned that to advantage. We also learn about the personalizing power of jibbitz and how product extensions and geographic expansion are fueling their growth. We also delve deep into the diverse, increasingly digitally-driven, go-to-market strategy that is putting the company on a path to hit $5 billion in sales by 2026. Lastly we get Michelle's perspective on how to balance purpose and profits. But first we take on the news of the week, including earnings from three DTC brands. Lululemon was first out of the gate with continuing strong results. RH also turned in another solid quarter, but their CEO called out concerns about increasing headwinds. Lastly, Chewy continues the trend of "profitless prosperity" for disruptor brands as they reported strong sales and mounting losses. Their co-founder (Ryan Cohen) also gets this week's chutzpah award for pushing big changes at Bed, Bath & Beyond when his company has yet to break-even. We also touch on all the store openings from Five Below and other value retailers and when this music might stop. Here is the episode with Vuori's CEO Joe Kudla that Michelle mentions. And don't forget to check out our bonus episode recapping this year's Shoptalk conference, recorded live from high above the Vegas Strip.  About MichelleMichelle Poole became President, Crocs, Inc. in September 2020 and has oversight of the Americas, Asia and EMEA regional commercial teams, as well as Product Design and Management, Merchandising, and Marketing teams. Crafting a Compelling Omnichannel Strategy with guest Richard Armour, SVP eCommerce for Michaels Stores

Richard Armour is a deeply experienced omni-channel retail executive having cut his teeth at Travelocity and Gamestop. Now he is helping drive the digital transformation for Michaels Stores, one of North America's largest provider of arts, crafts, framing, and more for makers and do-it-yourself home decorators. We dig deep into the evolution of e-commerce, how the blurring of the lines between digital and physical makes everything harder and how Michael's has been able to accelerate its transformation. We also unpack Richard's provocative statement that "everything is table stakes now" and lean how Michael's plans to build on their momentum going forward by maintaining a "test and learn" culture. But first we take on this week's news, including Steve's admonition to "Buckle Up Buttercup" in the face of escalating inflation. Then we discuss Kohl's Investor Day presentation, which seems long on ambition, but short on truly being remarkable. Then we delve into recent earnings reports, which mostly point to the strong getting stronger as e-commerce growth decelerates and the continuing struggles of disruptor brands (Stitch Fix, The Real Retail) to get on a glide path to profitability. ***************************************************To record a question for us go to  speakpipe.com/remarkableretail Kohl's Investor Day Presentation Steve's recent Forbes articles related to our news segment Is Kohl’s New Strategy Merely A Slightly Better Version Of Mediocre? The Profitless Prosperity of Disruptor Brands The Stores Strike Back Again. The Great DTC v. Wholesale Debate with guest Simeon Siegel

This episode we welcome Simeon Siegel, the retail rockstar analyst from BMO for a provocative discussion on whether going direct-to-consumer is all it's cracked up to be. In a Masterclass on retail growth strategies, we first clean up some of the often confusing nomenclature, then discuss whether wholesale really is a dirty word and how everything old is often new again.Mostly we go beyond the clickbait headlines to dig into Simeon's report which countered the narrative that going direct automatically leads to an increase in revenues and profits. And we get his hot takes on Nike's strategy and how we should think about the right mix of wholesale and direct going forward. As an added bonus, Steve reminds us that DTC is hardly new and creates yet another term: "Analog Native Vertical Brands" or "ANVB's." But first we take on the news of the week, including what to make of Amazon's closing 68 brick-and-mortar locations and Target's blockbuster earnings and continued doubling down on physical retail. We also wonder whether we are moving from the "Great Acceleration" to the "Great Rebalancing" given the tepid growth outlook revealed in earnings reports from Nordstrom, Best Buy and Kohl's.To get a copy of Simeon's report email him at simeon.siegel@bmo.comTo record a question for us go to speakpipe.com/remarkableretailSteve's recent Forbes articles related to our news segment: https://www.forbes.com/sites/stevendennis/2022/03/04/amazons-surprise-store-closings-are-much-ado-about-nothing-heres-why/?sh=147f7e635acf https://www.forbes.com/sites/stevendennis/2022/02/07/what-we-get-so-very-wrong-about-amazons-retail-profitability/?sh=5523cd2721aahttps://www.forbes.com/sites/stevendennis/2022/02/23/the-stores-strike-back-again-again/?sh=284ab5657a92 Simeon Siegel, CFASimeon Siegel is a Managing Director and Senior Analyst at BMO Capital Markets specializing in Retail and E-commerce.
