Episode 136 - Future 50 Series - The Flourishing Lawyer - A Multi-Dimensional Approach to Performance and Well-Being

In this podcast in the Future 50 Series of the CLI Legalpreneurs Spotlight, we chatted with Heidi K. Brown about her new book, The Flourishing Lawyer - A Multi-Dimensional Approach to Performance and Well-Being (2022). Heidi has been exploring the lawyer psyche for a number of years. What distinguishes Heidi's work in this area is its multidisciplinary approach and that it draws from lessons learned from other industries like the world of elite sports professionals. It's also personal. It's part of Heidi's lived experience as a former practising lawyer and now working with lawyers of the future in her roles as Professor of Law and the Director of Legal Writing at Brooklyn Law School in the US. A clear theme runs through Heidi's work – the importance of empathy, curiosity, positivity and a commitment to challenging what it means to be a lawyer and changing mindsets about what lawyering is or could be now and in the future. The Flourishing Lawyer is the third in a trilogy of exploration. It started with The Introverted Lawyer: A Seven-Step Journey Toward Authentically Empowered Advocacy (2017), then to Untangling Fear in Lawyering: A Four-Step Journey Toward Powerful Advocacy (2019) and now to The Flourishing Lawyer – and it's clear, thankfully, that this is not the end! Episode 134 - Future 50 Series - Justice System Metrics

How will we know if innovative changes to the civil justice system are actually happening and more, if they are making a difference? That's essentially the question that the American Bar Association (ABA) Centre for Innovation set out to investigate and answer in 2019. Guided by their working group, lots of stakeholder engagement, and lots of iterations too, in 2022, they concluded phase one of the project and launched its output – "a tool that enables all stakeholders to build effective metrics to evaluate their desired outcomes"- Justice System Metrics. The best way to understand the metrics and data in support is to visit the website, experiment and explore. That's also easy to do because the site is super user-friendly. It's been built so those new to the world of data and metrics can find what you want as easily as those who are more adept. The metrics "are searchable based on the type of data it supplies, the location you can find that data, or by keywords connecting similar or relative metrics. The use cases are searchable by publication date, keywords, and data source." There is also a bunch of resources on the website in the "Metrics in Action" section. And, a step-by-step guide on how to create your journey in the "Use the Metrics" section. This is a multi-phase project. The ABA is actively encouraging people to provide feedback, resources, and contribute their thoughts on the developed metrics and their own data and metrics too: " the website is meant to serve as a clearing house for the metrics and research being done that help" the ABA "evaluate the effectiveness our justice system." Discussing this project with working group members Joey Gartner, Director of, and Counsel at, the ABA Centre for Innovation and Amanda Brown, Executive Director of the Lagniappe Law Lab, was inspiring – we can't wait to see where this project goes next! Episode 133 - Future 50 Series - oneNDA and the standardisation of legal documents

The oneNDA initiative has changed the way legal documents are created and used. It's also signalled an evolving change in the way lawyers and allied legal professionals work too – one where tech features as prominently as design, client experience, and collaboration. These are big statements, but so too is what serial legalpreneur and change maker Electra Japonas has achieved in the last 18 months! In this podcast, in the Future 50 Series of the CLI Legalpreneurs Spotlight, we chatted with Electra about her experience working in Europe and the UK and in her own strategic legal operations and design consultancy, The Law Boutique, that led to OneNDA (a standardised Non-Disclosure Agreement), Claustack (an online collaborative space for lawyers) and most recently oneDPA (a standardised Data Processing Agreement). The oneNDA initiative started as a conversation with a colleague, turned into a question posed to the legal community on LinkedIn, and resulted in an open source, standard-form Non-Disclosure Agreement created by the legal community, for the legal and business communities. It was the beginning of much more that quickly followed and even more still to come! If you would prefer to watch rather than listen to this podcast, you'll find the video here. Episode 132 - Future 50 Series - Splitchain – bringing blockchain and legal together

In this podcast in the Future 50 Series of the CLI Legalpreneurs Spotlight, we chatted with Lisa Fitzgerald about Splitchain – a word she has created that provides a new way to conceptualise and integrate digital products/services and the law. The integration is important. Blockchain does not have all the answers. The law doesn't have them either. There's a need for interdependence. There's also a need for multi-disciplinary solutions. And, lawyers need to be part of all these conversations – part of the solutions and not the obstacle to achieving them! Splitchain-ists are real and thriving. Their practical, solution-driven collaborations are reshaping the legal ecosystem in places like Lander & Rogers iHub. We chatted with Lisa about all this and a whole lot more. Lisa's had an amazing career in the legal world in the UK and Australia, as a judge's associate, in-house counsel, lawyer in private practice, and now as a Partner at Lander & Rogers. A common theme has run through much of Lisa's career – a focus on corporate/commercial, tech, data, IP, privacy, cyber, telecommunications, innovation – it's provided a deep understanding of the issues, the gaps, the solutions, and a global context for her work in the digital space. You might also like to read this article from Lisa on the Lander & Rogers website titled: Splitchain: Reconciling blockchain and the law. Episode 131 - Future 50 Series - Digital Transformation, Law Firms and Culture

Digital Transformation, Law Firms and Culture – independent and siloed or inextricably intertwined? That's the question Isabel Parker answered in her recently published book: Successful Digital Transformation in Law firms A Question of Culture. Change is never easy. Changing an industry that is financially secure, comfortable with the status quo, risk adverse, and built on precedent, is even harder. But, that change is also inevitable in our VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) world. In this podcast in the Future 50 Series of the CLI Legalpreneurs Spotlight, we chatted with Isabel about her book. We discussed the changing legal ecosystem and, in particular, the meaning of culture; the link between digital transformation and culture; the importance of building buy-in for sustainable change; and where/how law firms can start their transformation journey. Isabel has had an amazing career in law firms, starting out as a practising lawyer, moving into the role of Chief Innovation Officer, and now as Executive Director of the Digital Legal Exchange. The candid, practical, and real-world commentary, observations, and advice throughout the book and this video, reflect her deep, lived experience in the subject matter.
