Episode 138: Your Bariatric HOME Community
Today I am joined by my favorite co-host and bariatric post-op, Laura Preston. In today’s episode we talk about how finding your bariatric community in today’s climate is so much easier than when she and I entered the bariatric community nearly 2 decades ago! It’s critical as a bariatric patient to find a “home group” if you will, while still following your favorite individuals on social media. IN a home group, you develop relationships with a core group of people you can get to know, to count on to be there for you, to answer questions, to share ideas with, and to learn from. These kinds of bariatric friendships are truly a gift as a post-op! It’s great to have family and friends who support you along your journey, and yet oftentimes, as well-meaning as they are, they may not always really understand what you’re going through. They might also not want to hear about your bariatric journey as often as you’d like to talk about it! BariAftercare is the kind of bariatric home group where you have daily interaction with peers and professionals alike. AND, you can basically join BariAftercare for a full year for $5 if you sign up for my online 10-week class called Gain While You Lose, which begins on September 11th. Listen in to learn the details! This is the best win-win situation of the year!Resources:BariAfterare: www.bariaftercare.comConnie Stapleton PhD website: www.conniestapletonphd.comBariAftercare website: https://www.conniestapletonphd.com/bariaftercareBariAftercare Facebook page (for members only): https://www.facebook.com/groups/BariAftercareInstagram: @therealbariboss (Tabitha Johnson)Instagram @drsusanmitchell (Dr. Susan Mitchell)Instgram: @lauraleepreston (Laura Preston)Instagram: @chefhealthyhenry (Henry Baker)Instagram: @cale101 (Caleshia Haynes)Instagram: @myweightishistory (Rob Dimedio)Please subscribe to the show and rate it on Apple Podcasts, download free information at www.conniestapletonphd.com, and follow me on Twitter (@cstapletonphd), Instagram (@cstapletonphd), YouTube, LinkedIn, and on Facebook.

Episode 137: Lifestyle, Health and Where YOU Could be Headed
I end most of my podcasts and anything else I do when speaking to patients by saying, “It’s Your Health! Your Responsibility. This Day. Every Day.” After reading so much lately about how lifestyle, and specifically, how STRESS affects not only weight gain or regain, but the prevalence of cancers, Multiple Sclerosis, autoimmune diseases and Alzheimer’s disease, not to mention heart disease, arthritis, and diabetes, I am even more passionate about getting the word out about the importance of creating a healthy lifestyle for ourselves. A lifestyle that includes, of course, the quality of the foods you eat and getting regular exercise, but also involves participating in activities you very much enjoy, activities that reduce your levels of stress. A lifestyle that involves spending time with people you enjoy, who bring love and laughter into your world as opposed to adding to your levels of stress, and a lifestyle that includes having thoughts that are positive about yourself and about life! Your overall lifestyle can protect you from really bad chronic diseases AND may help you heal from disease already attacking your body. Let’s get started with this vital information so YOU can see what I’m all worked up about!Resources:BariAfterare: www.bariaftercare.comConnie Stapleton PhD website: www.conniestapletonphd.comBariAftercare website: https://www.conniestapletonphd.com/bariaftercareBariAftercare Facebook page (for members only): https://www.facebook.com/groups/BariAftercareInstagram: @therealbariboss (Tabitha Johnson)Instagram @drsusanmitchell (Dr. Susan Mitchell)Instgram: @lauraleepreston (Laura Preston)Instagram: @chefhealthyhenry (Henry Baker)Instagram: @cale101 (Caleshia Haynes)Instagram: @myweightishistory (Rob Dimedio)Books:When the Body Says No by Gabor MateDopamine Nation by Anna Lembke, MDThe Joy of Movement by Kelly McGonigal, PhDGoddesses Never Age by Dr. Christiane Northrup, MDThe Body Knows the Score by Bessel van der Kolk, MD Movement for Self-Healing by Meir SchneiderHands of Light by Barbara Ann BrennanPlease subscribe to the show and rate it on Apple Podcasts, download free information at www.conniestapletonphd.com, and follow me on Twitter (@cstapletonphd), Instagram (@cstapletonphd), YouTube, LinkedIn, and on Facebook.

Episode 136: Lifestyle Chat with Laura
In the last episode of BariAftercare, the Podcast! I talked about how the bariatric lifestyle is more than developing healthy habits in the areas of eating and exercise! Lifestyle incorporates your hobbies, your attitudes, the people you hang with and so much more! My good friend and passionate advocate of creating the life you love, Laura Preston was very enthusiastic about that episode and so we decided to have a chat together about how important creating a healthy lifestyle is, not only to your goals with weight, but in order to get the most out of life all the way around! I think you’ll enjoy our passion about the topic! Episode 135: A Healthy Lifestyle at Any Size
In the world of bariatric medicine, the word Lifestyle is often associated with nutrition and physical movement. Those are absolutely part of what lifestyle means. In addition, a healthy lifestyle includes your mindset, the people you hang out with, and the activities you participate in. Lifestyle is about your whole self… mind, body and spirit. Your overall lifestyle, as it turns out, has a huge impact on chronic disease. You’ve been told how much your weight has negatively affected your health for a long time… Turns out there are other aspects of lifestyle that also play a tremendous role in diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and inflammatory diseases. You had bariatric surgery so you could lose weight and reduce the likelihood of having those diseases. Now it’s time for you to look at other lifestyle factors that can also help treat or prevent you from having those diseases! It’s all about overall lifestyle!Resources:BariAfterare: www.bariaftercare.comConnie Stapleton PhD website: www.conniestapletonphd.comBariAftercare website: https://www.conniestapletonphd.com/bariaftercareBariAftercare Facebook page (for members only): https://www.facebook.com/groups/BariAftercareInstagram: @therealbariboss (Tabitha Johnson)Instagram @drsusanmitchell (Dr.

Episode 134: Meet Jeannie, a dynamo Bariatric RD!
I recently met Jeannie, a very dynamic, straightforward (my kinda woman) bariatric dietitian. Jeannie was recommended to me by my good friend and 18-year post-op, Laura Preston. Laura texted me these exact words: “Jeanie is a ROCK star…..super real. Super realistic. Funny. Straight Shooter.” And she on target with every one of those descriptive words! I had a wonderful time talking with Jeannie about how and why we both love working with the bariatric population. Listen as Jeannie shares terrific tips for patients who are working to create truly healthy lifestyles and you’ll hear for yourself why Laura AND I sing her praises. You can find Jeannie on Instagram at @barisuccessrd. After you follow Jeannie on Instagram, Go to www.bariaftercare.com and sign up for this incredible aftercare program! Episode 133: Mind Prep – the Book! Part 2
In the last podcast episode, I reviewed my book called MindPrep – the Book! The title says “the book” in it because I have a video series called MindPrep. The video series is what inspired me to turn the content into a book. Not only do I include all of the information from the Mind Prep videos in the book, I have added information I’ve accumulated over the many years since initially developing the initial video series. If you missed the last podcast episode in which I reviewed the first half of the book, be sure to listen to it! In this episode, I’m discussing the last half of the book, the section focused primarily on the psychological and emotional changes that take place after a person has surgery. Things like your relationships… with food, with other people, and with yourself! I cover the importance of the Gotta Do ‘Ems, how vital it is to participate in an Aftercare program, and how critical it is to immerse yourself in learning the skills you need in order to refrain from emotional eating, to deal with naysayers and to avoid self-sabotage. Take a listen and then order the book either from my webpage at www.conniestapletonphd.com or from Amazon! Episode 132: Mind Prep – the Book! Part 1
Fifteen years ago… or maybe it’s been longer ago at this point, I created a series of ten videos I require every person for whom I complete a presurgical psychological evaluation to watch. OK… I only require that they watch the first five as they are predominantly focused on pre-surgical psychological and emotional issues, but I strongly encourage them to watch the five post-op videos as well… even though they haven’t yet had surgery. The MindPrep series was created in part to assuage my sense of guilt. I felt guilty – and frankly – unethical having only one session with a patient. In that one session I am expected to get a full history from them AND share some information I believe they need prior to having surgery. Hence, the videos… and now the book! I have added a tremendous amount of information to MindPrep – the book. This book is invaluable to anyone at any stage of their bariatric journey! If you’re just starting the process or if you had your procedure ten years ago, this book will open your eyes to things you may never have thought of and help you in remarkable ways as you develop your healthy lifestyle. In Part One I cover the first half of the book and in the next podcast episode, we’ll cover the second half! Now let’s get started! Go to www.bariaftercare.com and check it out! Episode 129: Bonus Podcast — Bariatric Men’s Retreat
The number of women for whom I conduct pre-surgical bariatric evaluations far outweighs the number of men! According to the National Institutes of Health, 80% of those who had bariatric surgery in the ten years beginning in 2002 were women … meaning only 20% were men. These numbers remain pretty consistent today. Consequently, men are left out of the post-op bariatric community in a number of ways… which includes the therapeutic retreats I have been doing for the past five years. That all changes this year when, with the help of two of my favorite men in the bariatric community, I am offering the first therapeutic, five-day men’s bariatric retreat in Atlanta. Rob Dimedio will be assisting me in leading group discussions and taking charge of getting the guys doing some fun physical movement while Chef Healthy Henry involves the men in helping him cook for the entire gang while engaging with them in great conversation. Listen in and learn more about what the men’s retreat entails… And ladies – the women’s retreats are much the same and are equally as awesome!
