You Don’t Need to Sit on a Cushion to be Mindful with Shahin Najak

I’m excited to talk with Shahin Najak, mindfulness and meditation coach, about getting past mindfulness as a buzzword. What does it really mean to be mindful— and more importantly, what does it look like in real life?Mindfulness means paying attention to the moment. Shahin broke that down into two parts: having awareness and, this is important, not judging. Can you be aware of how often you judge — without judging yourself for it? That awareness is one starter practice Shahin shares. Mindfulness is about the practice.We think of mindfulness as of the mind or brain or head, but it’s deeply connected to the body. You need to notice what’s happening in your body. Throughout the day, ask: How am I feeling right now? How does that feel? What does that feel like in my body? You can ask this anytime—when you first get up, while waiting in line, as you cook dinner, driving to an appointment … Each time you check in, you build in awareness and build your mindfulness practice.BUILD A CUSHION. Don’t have 15 minutes for self-care? Build yourself a cushion. Scatter them through the day. Take a moment between tasks to feel your body. Maybe you are sitting in your car after grocery shopping and you feel the steering wheel in your hands. You stand with the sun on your face for a minute when you step out to get the mail. SEND SILENT KINDNESS. Pick five random people you come across during the week and send them silent kindness. For example, if somebody cuts you off, send the thought, “May you get home safely.” If you see somebody laughing, send the thought, “May you always have joy.” You can say it in your head, or say it aloud to model for your kids.

Take Your House Back with Cass Aarssen and Dana White

Decluttering comes up a LOT in people’s goals in FLOW365, and when we talked about plans for the week, three women, who I now refer to as “the Decluttering Ladies” kept coming up. So I knew I should get them on for some tips and tricks! Organizing is shuffling stuff from space to space. If you start with organizing or try to do both at the same time, it doesn’t work. Grab a trash bag and donation bin. Set a timer for five minutes, and start filling your bag and bin. Don’t organize. Don’t overthink. Just see what can go out. Anytime you have 5 minutes, do another session.FOCUS ON YOUR STUFF. It can be frustrating dealing with other people’s stuff when you are trying to clear space. Try focusing on your own. You can move other people’s stuff to their space. Focus on getting rid of your things that you no longer want or need. It may take a little while, but others may start to see stuff differently and start getting rid of their own.

Freeing Emotions with Lauren Fonvielle

If you’re curious about what this is and how it works, you’ll want to listen to my conversation with Lauren Fonvielle, an Integrative Energy Practitioner who specializes in EFT.EFT is short for Emotional Freedom Technique, also referred to as tapping. With this technique, you gently tapping on certain points of the body and acknowledge how you are feeling. Lauren compares it to acupuncture. In acupuncture, they place needles at the end points of the meridians where energy moves through our body. In EFT, we apply light pressure on similar points while talking out loud about how we are feeling. It may sound weird if you’ve never tried it. Even Lauren was skeptical at first, but there are studies to back it up.Tapping can take you out of fight or flight or freeze mode, which means you can make better choices and decisions. You can use tapping proactively too. Pay attention to your inner dialogue over the course of the day. Where are you beating yourself up? Reframe that to be kind to yourself. What can you notice about what you are doing well?KNOW YOURSELF. Pick one time of day to check in with yourself. (You can do this throughout the day, but if you are new to it, pick one time and check in consistently for a week.) Ask: What do I need in this moment? Maybe you need 15 minutes more sleep or water or more protein. Maybe you need to stop and breathe or step away from other people for 5 minutes. Find what you need and surrender to that need.EXPERIMENT WITH CRYSTALS. If you have crystals, try using them in one of these ways: Place it on an altar where you meditate. Sleep with it. Put it in your bath or water (not great for all crystals, but you can experiment). Put it in your bra or pocket. Hold it while you meditate or make a decision. If you don’t have crystals and are choosing one, don’t worry about what the “mean” or “do.” Pick one that calls out to you for whatever reason.

When’s the last time you got a card in the mail? I bet you opened it when you did. Snail mail cards get noticed. Try sending one for a client’s birthday or to congratulate them.PAY ATTENTION. Not sure what to send a card for? Pay attention. If you follow a client on social, notice when they have a work win, a life milestone, or something else going on. Send a card letting them know you are thinking of them. The more you do this, the more you’ll start to pick things up. SET UP A SYSTEM. Sending cards is hard without an address. Get in the habit of asking for addresses and getting them into your system. You can set up specific times to send cards to contacts (though some will be spontaneous because you got a heartfelt prompt.)
