Building a Successful Business with Andre Toro
“I am transforming lives, and I'm transforming businesses.” –Andre ToroI love a story about a woman who changes her mind, because a lot of us wish we could do what someone else is doing. Portrait photographer Andre Toro made the big switch to follow her passion, and I can’t wait for you to hear her story.Andre is the amazing soul behind my 50th birthday photo shoot (you can see some of her work in the inaugural issue of Pause Magazine. Before she launched her photography business, she studied Electrical Engineering in Venezuela, got an MBA at MIT, and worked in the tech industry. How do you make that kind of pivot work? I can’t wait for you to hear this conversation. We talk about: The concussion that changed her life and set her on the path to her photography businessGiving herself time to build her brand, adjusting their family budget during her growth, and how doing great for the industry wasn’t enough to replace what she had been doingRecognizing the skills she brought to something she had never done before, and the identity crisis when she first made the changeOutsourcing all the non-kid, non-photography things and running a lean businessCreating a high-touch, luxury business and becoming an aspirational brandHow she sets and meets goals — and what happens when something falls through or health issues ariseABOUT ANDREAndre Toro is a portrait photographer specializing in family photos and headshots. She’s a passionate soul, obsessed with human connection and emotive storytelling. Andre studied portrait photography at Photographic Center Northwest in Seattle and started a side hustle. Action is how change happens.Often we feel like our actions have to be huge to match the bigness of our desires, but we have seen over and over and over again that the little things add up. By stacking up a series of Doable Changes, you will create that big change that you crave. Choose the one that really resonates with you this week and really make it part of your life. Here are Three Doable Changes from this conversation:OUTSOURCE SOMETHING. Andre’s belief is that if it’s not client facing, it shouldn’t be you, and at home, anything not kid related outsource. What can you outsource at home or at work? Make a list of possibilities. Pick one to outsource now.SET A QUOTA. Set a monthly quota for yourself. Then break it down to see how you can meet it. What can you do if something falls through? What are the other routes to your quota?YOU CAN DO IT. Feeling a little uncertain because you’ve never done “this” before? Make a list of all the things you’ve done — skills, experience, strengths. How do those apply to the thing you want to do? I bet you are more ready than you think.

Action is where change happens.Even though we want big change, it’s really little things done over and over that make the difference. So pick a doable thing. Put it in your calendar. Weave it through your days for a week and then move on to the next one. It will have a snowball effect. Here are three Doable Changes from this conversation:LEARN ABOUT YOUR HUMAN DESIGN. If you don’t have your chart, get it done! If you have it, but it felt confusing, go find what your type and authority are and then learn about those. RECLAIM DECISION MAKING POWER. Once you learn more about how you best make decisions, use that the next time you have to make a decision. It might mean sleeping on it or having somebody ask you questions or feeling into your body. It’s different for each design.SCHEDULE AN END OF WEEK PAUSE. Set aside a few minutes to reflect on what you did over the past week. Ask: What went well? What didn't go well? What have you learned from both? Who have you become? How will that inform what you do next week?

Mindset of Relationships with Tannaz Hosseinpour
“Self worth is not something that's earned. It's something that is remembered.” –Tannaz HosseinpourIndividualism and isolation are doing a number on us. Relationship specialist Tannaz Hosseinpour helps us see why things aren’t working — and what we can do about it.We all want to belong, even us introverts who need time alone. We want the village we were promised, but to be able to make the most of it, we need to be able to receive it.Tannaz and I explore both how the collective can support us and what we need as individuals to thrive. We talk about: How prioritizing individualism over collectivism and masculine energy over feminine leads to problemsWhy we need connection to energy bigger than ourselves and learning to feel safe receivingThe impact of COVID and our resultant sense of safety on relationships nowHaving an internal anchor to ground yourselfHow to set boundaries with others and ourselves5 different kinds of intimacy we craveABOUT TANNAZTannaz Hosseinpour is a relationship coach and registered psychotherapist (qualifying) who helps individuals build emotionally secure relationships, starting with the one they have with themselves. By stacking up a series of Doable Changes, you will create that big change that you crave. Choose the one that really resonates with you this week and really make it part of your life. Here are Three Doable Changes from this conversation:SMALL STEPS TO FEELING SAFE WITH PEOPLE. Post-Covid, a lot of us don’t feel safe in public or large groups, and we may not even realize it. Taking small steps to spend time with people can make a difference. Try getting together with one or two people. Breathe through discomfort. Remind yourself you are safe. Try a small group.SET A BOUNDARY. Instead of getting angry at somebody else when you feel hurt, express your “I” statement about how you feel and what you would like. Enforce the boundary. If the other person does not respond, choose the change your actions.TAKE A BREAK. Next time you find yourself in an argument or going around and around in circles of not understanding, take a break. Give yourself at least 20 minutes to re regulate. Come back to the conversation when all parties have had a chance to do that.

Money and Divorce with Gabriella Martinelli
“Divorce is mostly about money.” –Gabriella MartinelliMarried? Do you know where your money is? I’m really excited to talk with Gabriella Martinelli, Certified Divorce Financial Analyst, about what we need to know about our finances and protecting ourselves before or during a divorce.Even if you don’t think you are headed in that direction, you can protect yourself, because if you don’t know where the money is or don’t have access to the accounts, and something happens, you’re stuck.Divorce is often messy — a mix of emotions, laws that aren’t clear, and financial confusion. Getting clarity around the money can help you make choices from a better place. We talk about: Why so many women don’t know about money — and why it’s a problemFinancial and nonfinancial contributions to the familyFear about not having enough money and trust about money going both ways Protecting your business early and keeping business expenses separate from household expensesQuestions you should be asking and how you can start to find informationWhy you should hire a CDFA before an attorney if you are moving toward divorceABOUT GABRIELLAGabriella E. Change comes from action. Doable changes are things that you can add into your life, one at a time to make micro shifts and really create a ripple effect that will create a big change over time. Choose one that really piques your interest and roll with it. Here are three Doable Changes from this conversation:GET A SNAPSHOT OF YOUR FAMILY FINANCIAL PICTURE. What accounts do you have? What investments? What debt? Are your names on those accounts? Ask questions. Collect information. Ask for more access. It’s not only useful in case of divorce, but also in case something happens to your spouse and you need to do more than you are doing financially.DIG DEEPER. Gabriella offers some ideas about using tax returns, credit reports, and other documents to start to gather information on your own if you feel you can’t ask questions or don’t trust the answers.PROTECT YOUR BUSINESS. While protecting your business may take multiple changes, the first step you can take is to talk to an attorney about protecting your business as your livelihood in case, separate from other assets. From there you can make decisions about what you need to do.

“How do we create emotional safety and help each other regulate these emotions?” –Tarah KerwinDo you keep having the same fights over and over? Do you feel like your partner is just trying to set you off? I’m really excited to talk with relationship counselor Tarah Kerwin about relationship renovation. We dive into how childhood trauma (big and little) affects our relationships. Even if you think you didn’t experience trauma, Tarah shows us how different experiences can affect how we react to our partners, who tend to trigger us the most. Many of us are in a transition period, perhaps becoming empty nesters or one person retiring, or stepping more into ourselves as responsibilities for others change. How does this shape our relationship? How can we make decisions based on clarity instead of anger or frustration or fear?We talk about: How childhood trauma shows up later and how kids can reflect back our traumaThe three Ps for relationships — predict, plan, prepareCodewords to stop overwhelm and resentmentTara Brach’s RAIN techniqueDeveloping emotional safety go through transitions together and making decisions from a place of clarityCreating a time to prioritize your relationshipABOUT TARAHTarah Kerwin, along with her husband EJ, is dedicated to transforming couples’ lives through meaningful connection and support. Change comes from action. Sometimes action gets a bad rap. You can be kind to yourself. You can practice being AND doing, but for change to happen you have to take steps. The way we take care of ourselves is making the steps doable and focusing on one thing at a time. We take time to integrate the change and then move on to the next one. Pick a Doable Change that resonates with you the most to start from. Here are three Doable changes that we chose from this conversation. MAKE A CODE WORD. Create a code word that means, “I’m overwhelmed and starting to get resentful” or out of your zone of tolerance. Discuss what you need to do when you use your code word. If your partner chooses one too, respect their needs when they use it.SCHEDULE TIME TO FOCUS ON YOUR RELATIONSHIP. Even if you are in couples therapy or counseling, schedule time outside to focus on your relationship. Have time regularly where you are together and focused on each other.PREDICT, PLAN, PREPARE. At the beginning of the day, stop and think about what’s going to happen. What is likely to make you angry, defensive, hurt, or otherwise challenged? How could that situation be better? Prepare to handle the situation in a way that is less triggering.
