A public debate between Federalists and Anti-Federalists ignited after an anonymous op-ed cautioned readers about the new Constitution. The podcast dives into the origins of the Anti-Federalists and their preference for decentralized government. It also explores the significance of the Anti-Federalists in inspiring the Federalist Papers and discusses the power dynamics between the states and national government. The podcast concludes by examining the debate over including a Bill of Rights in the Constitution.

After just six years under the Articles of Confederation, a committee of anxious delegates agreed to meet in Philadelphia to amend the government. While the country suffered recession and rebellions, a group of fifty-five men determined the shape of the new United States. The document that emerged after that summer of debate was littered with strange ideas and unsavory concessions. The delegates decided they'd be pleased if this new government lasted fifty years. The Articles of Confederation was our first constitution, and it lasted nine years.
