U in Burnout Stands For Upheaval
Next up in the BURNOUT acronym is the letter U for upheaval.
Burnout can create a situation where your life is completely upside down, and create upheaval all of your life. When I had my burnout in 2009/10, you can say that my life was upside down and an upheaval took place. For those of you that are not familiar with my over a period of time over 369 days, I had a heart attack that should have killed me. I lost my job during an economic recession. The family vehicle was repossessed. And then finally our home was foreclosed. All in a year. I don't want anybody to go through that. It was not fun for my family or myself to experience those losses. But we did. And as I said in an earlier post, burnout is a choice.

O in Burnout Stands For Offside
Next up in the Burnout acronym is the letter O for offside.
I'm a huge sports fan. I wasn't very good at it playing. I played basketball and baseball as a kid, but my asthma and body size as a youth was a barrier (self-imposed) to pursue a career in sports.
I could have made changes. I could have taken better care of myself as a child. I could have chosen to be a little bit more athletic and practice. Yes, A.I., I said practice. We're talking about practice.
You can improve yourself and you can actually stay in the game and be in balance. When you're burned out in the game of life. You're offside. You're out of bounds. You're not doing the things that you need to do because you're too busy fighting this burned out state. Your body is in a constant state of flux, pedal to the floor constantly, which has your body's using all its energy to repair the damage that burnout causes.

Feeling different can be commonplace among kids and today’s digital age certainly isn’t helping. But, what’s important, is the choice that our kids make to let their differences dictate their lives or take advantage of those differences to find success.
Michele L. Sullivan knows this all too well. Michelle was born with a rare form of dwarfism, and realized that she had three choices to make at an early age:
She could tailor her differences into something more suitable for the world.
She could hide from the world and live on the fringe.
Or, she could embrace her differences, turn them into assets, and come to recognize that there was a strength within them that could help others.
Michele chose to embrace her differences, which led her to become the first female president of the Caterpillar Foundation, a TEDWomen speaker with 1.6 million views and a prominent philanthropist. In her new motivational book, Looking Up: How a Different Perspective Turns Obstacles Into Advantages released on February 25, 2020 (HarperCollins Leadership), she outlines her story and roadmap for kids to turn their differences into strengths. The book has received high praise and endorsements from Sheryl Sandberg, Bono, and Michael Bloomberg.
We've all had moments when we felt like we didn't belong. But for Michele, who was born with a rare form of dwarfism, fitting in was never an option. Michele's acceptance of not filling anyone's shoes but her own led her to become a force to be reckoned with in corporate philanthropy. Standing at just four feet tall, and perpetually looking up, Michele transformed her perceived disability into an advantage—using it as fuel, a source of insight, and a relentless drive that allowed her to establish an extraordinary career. Her passion took her from the Oval Office alongside President Barack Obama to the halls of one the biggest philanthropy powerhouses in the U.S., the Caterpillar Foundation—where she would ultimately become the first female President— to the villages of Uganda where she sought to eradicate poverty.

During the period of isolation and uncertainty, we need strong leaders more than ever—but where can you turn for leadership training, council, and help at this time? You need a Grassroots Leadership Revolution!
Glain Roberts-McCabe, founder and president of the award-winning The Roundtable, has spent decades helping groups of ambitious leaders in organizations come together, raise their game and take control of their careers. In The Grassroots Leadership Revolution, she shares the same methods she uses with clients including PepsiCo Foods Canada, CAA Club Group, the Toronto International Film Festival and others, so that you can create a community of leaders and build a trusted tribe to support you on your journey.
This book has been endorsed by Dan Pontefract, bestselling author of Open to Think and The Purpose Effect, and Marshall Goldsmith, Thinkers 50 #1 Executive Coach and New York Times #1–bestselling author of Triggers, Mojo, and What Got You Here Won’t Get You There.
Some topics Glain highlights in this book, to the current "new normal" include:
- What works and doesn't work when it comes to community building over Zoom: "Happy Hours" aren't enough—community happens when people can be vulnerable and support one another.
- How The Roundtable runs its own virtual leadership coaching teams, and how to do this successfully
- Why people are bringing emotions to work right now—and why that's a good thing
- Forced into virtual meetings, organizations are realizing that they don't have to have people in the same room to develop leaders
