#149 - Monopoly Madness
Monopoly is notorious for destroying families and relationships. It's a game with many frustrations built right into it - the element of chance, for example. What's interesting is that many of the elements built into Monopoly are reflected by life itself. Perhaps that explains why it's so frustrating! In this episode, I talk about the nature of play and games, why it's important, and what the preconditions are for te game to be playable in the first place. I also discuss life lessons from one of the best boardgames ever made: Monopoly. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#148 - Stoic Externals
I see many shy away from Stoicism because they feel that they can't enjoy life. They feel Stoicism is a philosophy is never enjoying anything. That simply isn't the case. The Stoics were very particular in how they viewed things, and it is no different with "externals", which were thought to be indifferent. That being said, how does Stoicism view the passionate areas of life, such as music, or fiction, or art, or even simple pleasures like brownies? Can a Stoic "have their cake and eat it too", or must one sustain from all simple pleasures? In this episode I discuss Stoicism through the lens of a passionate musician and lover of fiction. #146 - The End of the World
What would you do if you had one day left to live? Who would you see? How would you feel? Such a question is nauseating to contemplate, truly, but it does offer some keen insight. It extends quite naturally into the question of: what does it mean to really live? Many of us have long-term goals in life and are dead-focused on achievement. At the same time, life is filled with all kind of extraordinary moments happening every single day that seem to pass us by. So which is greater: the big things, or the little things? #145 - Take The Hits
Motivation isn't particularly hard to come by. It's easy to watch documentaries of people climbing mountains, for example. This commonly motivates people. We think "man, if he can do it so can I!". Though that is most definitely true, you are feeling that motivation from your couch. Actually climbing the mountain is a whole other story.Yes, it will be physically challenging, but there is another challenge that may just be greater and that is facing social adversity. Manifested today as online trolls, there has never been a shortage of people ready to tear you down when you start becoming successful. But why? And what's the solution? #143 - Go Easy On Me
Every now and then, an artist releases something that takes the world by storm. Fame has something to do with it, but not all. After all, not every single song a famous musician releases rises to the top. So then, what else is it?Art generally has different layers of meaning - a high level meaning, and a much deeper one. What makes a particular work of art great is that it represents a fundamentally deep and archaic idea in a modern way. Most recently, Adele has done this with her song "Go Easy On Me.The Strong Stoic Podcast is a raw, honest, and unapologetically deep podcast about philosophy and self-improvement. #142 - A Heavy Heart
Life is tough. It's full of pain and suffering, but more particularly, grief, loss, our own inadequacies and evil, embarrassing moments from our past (just to name a few). These things weigh your heart down over time. It's a burden, each and every one. Unfortunately, your heart will only get heavier over time; that is something you cannot change. But that doesn't mean you are powerless. The Strong Stoic Podcast is a raw, honest, and unapologetically deep podcast about philosophy and self-improvement. #141 - The Elephant & The Rider
Human beings are rational, right? We can control our emotions and reason our way through morality. At least that's what many of us think and feel. The truth is much more complicated. In fact, in many ways, our rationality is not ultimately in charge, especially when it comes to morality. Moral psychologist Jonathan Haidt developed an analogy to explain how our moral psychology actually works - the elephant and the rider. The elephant is your intuition - what you are inclined to think - and the rider is your rationality. In such an arrangement, who is in charge: the elephant or the rider? Is the rider simply a slave to the elephant's wishes or can it tighten the reins and direct the elephant anywhere? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#140 - Kai Whiting: Modern Man & God
Kai Whiting is a lecturer in sustainability and Stoicism. This is the third time Kai has been on the podcast, and in this episode we tackle (yet again) a rather controversial topic: is it stupid for modern man to believe in God?As always, the intent here isn't to sway you to believe in God or not but rather to offer perspective. Enjoy, and check out Kai's work including his co-authored book, Being Better: Stoicism for a World Worth Living In.www.StoicKai.comStoicism Thailand talk on the Stoic God: https://youtu.be/uYPWCQc96-8The Stoic God on the Walled Garden Podcast: https://youtu.be/_25myi-rBhk Learn more about your ad choices.
