#278 - How to Be Strong But Not Brittle
Strength I define as the ability to resist. The resistance takes many forms – it can take the form of a weight, for example. It can also take the form of adversity in life. Temptations. The pull to vice.If someone can deadlift 500 pounds, we may deem them physically strong. Their body is able to resist the 500 pound load. And it’s important to consider it as resistance as opposed to, perhaps, a push or a pull.Resistance training (weight training) does have pushes and pulls, but, contrary to what many may think, it shouldn’t be considered aggressive. That’s where the word “resist” comes in. When you resist something, you are by definition in a state of defense. The opposite is one of offense. It’s attack versus defend. The virtuous among us are not aggressive. They are defensive. They don’t “fight” vice or evil per se but rather defend against it.Find this episode on:https://linktr.ee/Strongstoic The Strong Stoic Podcast is a raw, honest, and unapologetically deep podcast about philosophy and self-improvement. #277 - Can We Handle the Truth?
Dostoevsky explored many interesting, sometimes even contradictory, ideas in his novels. An existentialist Christian, he certainly philosophized much on the topic of truth.I’ve been fascinated with the idea of truth for quite some time. What does it mean for something to be true? Does it simply mean objective truth? Are there other truths worth considering, such as metaphorical truths or, what I call, philosophical truths? These are broad questions, and it would take a book to even attempt to answer them. However, the idea that Dostoevsky presents above - that people are unable to palate the truth without a little bit of falsehood - really points to an undebatable truth about truth - it is often difficult for us to accept.Find this episode on:https://linktr.ee/StrongstoicThe Strong Stoic Podcast is a raw, honest, and unapologetically deep podcast about philosophy and self-improvement. #275 - Navigating Nihilistic Tendencies
Nihilism states that there is no meaning to life, and that nothing you do really matters. The existentialists have an answer for how to deal with that: wade through it. However, this is easier said than done. We are all somewhere on that spectrum of "nihilistic" to "living a meaningful existence". But how do we effectively navigate these treacherous waters? #274 - Having Possessions Without Attachment
The Western culture is ripe with materialism. We crave new trendy clothes, the latest iPhone, the newest car, the biggest house - the list is never-ending. The Stoics call all of these things “externals”, meaning they do not define who you are as a person. This can be understood with the example of the rich person who has everything anyone could ever hope for and who is very arrogant and rude. Even though they have overflowing piles of material possessions (of externals), their character is far from optimal (that isn’t to say that all rich people are terrible people). So how do we balance getting things that we want while staying detached? #273 - "Nobody Gets Away With Anything, Ever"
What if the best thing that you can do for yourself is to do things for others? Certainly, that’s the “virtue is the only good” argument, to a large degree. That is, Stoicism claims that we can only truly flourish if we live a life of virtue in which we recognize our own place in the cosmos in the greater picture of everyone else. The Stoic lives and acts to make the world a better place. So, we could perhaps deem living virtuously selfish from a certain perspective. Learn more about your ad choices. #272 - What is Life Really About?
What is life really about? This is perhaps one of the most fundamental questions of philosophy. The Stoics have a simple enough answer: virtue. People on their deathbeds would also have a simple enough answer: the people you care about. Are these separate answers, or is there some confluence here? What is life REALLY about? #270 - Adopting Better Opinions & Perspectives; Connecting Opinions & Character
It is, of course, a core Stoic idea that it is not situations that upset us but rather our opinion of them. This points to a very deep connection between opinion and character: one’s opinion dictates one’s character. That doesn’t sound overly obvious. Isn’t an opinion just some arbitrary thing? And isn’t it outside of our control to some extent? In this episode, I discuss the connection between character, opinions, and perspective. Learn more about your ad choices.
