Shannah Shares: How Do I Make Peace With My Money Situation
Welcome back to another episode of Shannah Shares, Community Q&A where I tackle your listener questions. Today’s question comes from Reisha.“Hi Shannah. Thank you for taking the time to listen to my question. I really want to make 2022 better than the years prior. I’ve had a lot of anxiety and stress around money and just started realizing it after listening to your podcast. I always wondered why I would get so stressed out when I looked at my bank account, or when my credit card balance wasn’t decreasing so much, but then I would go and spend more money and get even more anxiety. It’s crazy to me that we do those sorts of things as humans. I do have a good job and make what most might consider a good income. But, things fall apart for me every month. I always think I will end up with more money left, which I don’t. I always think that I will just wake up one day and suddenly not be so stressed or anxious about money or my future, but I don’t. I heard you say in one episode a year or so back that you have to first make peace with your money situation before you can move forward. I actually wrote that down in the notes on my phone and keep coming back to it. Can you give me some tips and thoughts, things to journal about, anything really that can help me move towards peace? I really don’t want to spend the rest of my life stressed out about money when if you look at my take-home pay, I shouldn’t. I imagine someone else out there is feeling the same way. Actually, maybe we’re all ready to make peace. I think that’s what I love about this show, you always make me feel special and your non-judgemental approach is so heartwarming. Seriously, thanks. Ok, I know this is a big question, but would love your thoughts.”Episode MentionsHere are the journal questions mentioned in this episode.
What emotion/s are you holding on to about money?
In what ways do you feel like money keeps you stuck?
How have you attached your identity to money?
In what ways did your parents, or whoever raised you, talk about money?
If money didn’t exist, how would your days, weeks, months, years change?

Shannah Shares: Are My Workplace Benefits Valuable
Welcome back to another episode of Shannah Shares, community Q&A. In this episode, I’m tackling a question from a MMP listener, Susanna.“Hi there, Shannah. I’ve been listening to the show for a while now and finally got up enough nerve to ask a question. I’m new at a company and looking all over the workplace benefit options has my head spinning. I don’t know how to place any value on what I’m being offered, or really, what to pick. I’m also really thinking about money lessons from the pandemic and how that shapes my benefits - like hello mental health benefits. Also, I know I just started working for this company but I’m also considering making a big life change and start building my own business. Of course, if I do that, I loose out on all the juicy benefits…but again, I don’t even really know if those are of value. Ok, so you see, I’m lost here. I’d love to hear any tips from you or experts who can help guide me in valuing all of this and thinking about takeaways from the pandemic. Oh, also, any tips for deciding if it’s worth leaving these benefits behind because they can also be expensive. Thanks so much for answering my question.”I had a chance to speak with Marquis Smallwood, Vice President of Workforce Engagement at MetLife and Marsha Barnes, CEO of The Finance Bar, who deal with workplace benefits on a daily basis about this very question. Let’s hear their advice on how to know what benefits work for you and how to value those benefits.LinksMetLifeThe Finance BarUpwise AppMarquis Smallwood on LinkedInEpisode SponsorsA big thanks to all the sponsors who make this episode possible:Find out how Upstart can lower your monthly debt payments today when you go to UPSTART.com/mymoney. How to Invest in Stocks: The New Way to Build Wealth
Learning how to invest in stocks requires one rule - that you throw out the old rules and learn the new way to build wealth. Our guest, Joe Percoco, and his business partner, Clay Gardner, were frustrated that millennials only had two options for investing: buying and selling stocks themselves or investing in a market-weighted index. So they decided to create a third option. Joe is the co-founder and co-CEO of Titan, a fintech startup whose aim is to become this century’s answer to Fidelity Investments. With 500% growth in the last 12 months, 30,000+ users, nearly 1 billion in assets under management and a recent valuation of $450 Million - backed by investors like Andreessen Horowitz, Kevin Durant, Odell Beckham Jr. and Will Smith - it’s safe to say that Titan is well on its way to ushering in a new capital order. In this episode, you'll learn how to make money according to Joe, the new rules to investing, how to align your investing choices with your ethics, and so much more.
