Episode 24 - Growing up with Tourettes & OCD in Mexico City - A chat with Antonio
In this episode I chat with Antonio about his experiences of OCD. Antonio developed tourettes syndrome as a child. He initially struggled with this, but was able to overcome it, only to develop OCD during his later adolescents.
Mexico City, where he grew up, didn´t have many OCD specialists at this time and he was forced to seek out treatment in the United States.
The treatment didn´t work though and Antonio decided to try some quite extreme measures for dealing with the OCD. Antonio shares all the details of his fascinating story and eventual recovery from severe OCD and i´m sure you are going to find it helpful and intriguing.

Episode 23 - Harm OCD - An Interview with OCD therapist Kelley Franke AMFT
The focus for this weeks episode is harm OCD. This can be a particuarly hard OCD theme and people often really struggle with their thioughts. The fact of the matter is though that people with harm OCD are normally some of the kindest people in the world, which is why thoughts about harm are so disturbing for them. Paradoxically this revulsion to such thoughts also creates more of them. What we forcefully try and push away, often comes back to us and this creates the OCD cycle. Harm OCD then is no different from any other OCD and we can deal with it the same, through acceptance of the thoughts and standing up to our fears about them.
In todays episode I interview the OCD therapist Kelley Frank AMFT about how we can learn to manage harm OCD more effectively. Kelley Franke is Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist at the OCD Center of Los Angeles where she specializes in CBT, with a focus on Exposure & Response Prevention, in adults, adolescents, and children suffering from OCD, and other Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders, including body-focused repetitive behaviors. Kelley completed her Masters in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University. Prior to completing her graduate work she trained as a behavioral assistant at the OCD Center of Los Angeles. Additionally, she completed training in DBT from Behavioral Tech Research through The Linehan Institute and integrates many DBT based skills in her work with clients.

Episode 22 - A HOCD Autobiography with Tõnis
This weeks episode focuses in on the challenges of HOCD. I interview Tõnis, a 23 year old biology student from Estonia, about the challenges that OCD presented to him in regards to working out his own sexuality and being comfortable with it.
Tõnis discusses the pain and confusion he felt when he was younger and how this impacted his day to day life. In time, Tõnis realized that he was suffering with OCD and was able to see through the uncertainty this was creating. Today he even feels grateful for having had OCD as it has enabled him to find out so much more about himself and how his mind works.
This is a very positive and uplifting message. It reminds us that if we can give up the struggle with OCD and anxiety, then actually we might find that it´s trying to teach us something about our lives, leading to action and positive change.

Episode 19 - Alcohol & Anxiety - Interview with Alcohol Coach Karla Adkins
Ever wandered about whether alcohol could be making your OCD or anxiety worse? What is the role of alcohol in perpetuating anxiety disorders? Can it be something that we can manage effectively? Or as people who deal with anxiety, should it be avoided altogether. These are the sorts of questions i discuss in todays episode with Karla Adkins, an alcohol and anxiety coach.
It is certainly a subject that has interested me for a long time as i´ve often noticed the connection between hangovers and a worsening of OCD. But not only this, for me alcohol can even bring on more intense obsessions whilst i´m actually drinking it. Whilst i still drik today, i´m more mindful of it and limit the ammount I drink. It´s important to state here, that if you are struggling with alcohol, then you should definitely seek the support of a trained professional and medical doctor to get the help you need.
Karla is a certified coach by This Naked Mind, that specializes in alcohol dependency and the health impacts on the body. After struggling with an anxiety disorder and self-medicating with alcohol, Karla changed her path and started her alcohol-free journey in 2014. Since then, Karla strives to create a safe, judgment-free space where people can explore their relationship with alcohol, and is passionate about helping people created their own path for change. The path that leads to freedom.
Her website is karlaadkins.com and her programs are listed on there.

Episode 18 - Managing OCD in a Covid Prison - A True, but Surreal Story
This week’s episode is all about a horrible, but fascinating experience that I had with Covid 19 earlier this month. Whilst on holiday in the North of Spain, my friend came down with the virus and the local authorities locked us all down in what was effectively a Covid Prison. We were in separate rooms and were delivered a box with our food three times a day and that was it. We were told that we would be there for two weeks and that we should just accept it. As you may expect, it was a huge challenge for me to manage OCD in this situation, because not only had my liberty been taken away, but also, I was now surrounded by people with Covid 19. Having tested negative for it, I really didn´t want to catch it whilst there.
So this episode is all about how you can manage fears surrounding Covid 19 and still get on positively with your life, despite your worries and obsessions about it. By applying techniques from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and focusing on taking positive action, I was able to manage what could have quite easily become a very negative experience. I hope that you might be able to gain some insight from my experience and hopefully apply it to the day to day worries that we all have whilst living through a pandemic.
