176 - Charles Mully ”Changing the world one child at a time”
We have a powerful episode for you today. Now, we don't toss the word hero around lightly but today we have the honor of sitting down with a truly incredible human being, a hero with an incredible story.
On Today's episode, Alan sits down with real life hero Charles Mully, the Hero in the documentary, Mully, about the amazing story of his life and his journey from an abandoned street kid in Kenya to prominence and prosperity, and to caring for thousands of abandoned children by starting the Mully Childrens Family.
Whatever you do today, spend 30 minutes with this episode and share it with others.
About Charles Mully
Charles Mulli was the firstborn son of a poverty-stricken Kenyan family of ten children. By age 6 he was abandoned by his parents to live on the streets for the next 12 years. Through diligence, hard work, and faith, Charles rose to become a very successful businessman. He, his wife Esther, and their eight children lived very comfortably as Charles became a multi-millionaire.
In 1986, Charles began to hear a call on his life to care for the thousands of abandoned children he encountered on the streets of Kenya, especially as he remembered his own struggles there as a child. In 1989, Charles and Esther began to take street orphans and vulnerable children into their home to be raised alongside their own biological children. Those numbers grew so that over the last 30 years, the Mully Family has given their entire lives and considerable fortune to rescue, adopt, house, feed, clothe, and educate well over 13,000 Kenyan orphans who have graduated from the program as well as an additional 3,500 in the program currently.
Additionally, Mully Children’s Family (MCF) is the #1 employer, the sole source of clean water, and the main source of healthcare for the Ndalani and Kithimani Divisions in the Yatta District in which MCF resides. They have provided free education and a daily lunch for over 1,000 children in five other locations. During the 2007 post-election violence, MCF provided daily hot food for over 7,000 children in the camp and food rations for 20,000 displaced persons at the Eldoret IDP Camp as well as education for the children there.

Something we say at Stay Forth Designs is that the abundant life isn't a unicorn. It is possible to live an abundant life and it's made possible by pursing health before impact.

But what is happiness?

174 - Joe Pine ”The Experience Economy”
No matter what space you find yourself leading (business or otherwise), what you do is no longer enough to reach people. The landscape is quickly changing as people want more experiential and relational connections when it comes to how they interact with organizations.
So how do you lead in the experience economy?
On today's episode, Alan and Joe Pine, co author of The Experience Economy talk about why experiences are key to engaging people and why goods and services are no longer enough.
About Joe Pine
Co-author of The Experience Economy, Joseph Pine II is an internationally acclaimed author, speaker, and management advisor to Fortune 500 companies and entrepreneurial start-ups alike.
In 2020 Mr. Pine and his partner James H. Gilmore re-released in hardcover The Experience Economy: Competing for Customer Time, Attention, and Money featuring an all-new Preview to their best-selling 1999 book The Experience Economy: Work Is Theatre & Every Business a Stage. The book demonstrates how goods and services are no longer enough; what companies must offer today are experiences – memorable events that engage each customer in an inherently personal way. It further shows that in today’s Experience Economy companies now compete against the world for the time, attention, and money of individual customers. The Experience Economy has been published in fifteen languages and was named one of the 100 best business books of all time by 800ceoread (now Porchlight).
Mr. Pine also co-wrote Infinite Possibility: Creating Customer Value on the Digital Frontier with Kim Korn, Authenticity: What Consumers Really Want with Mr. Gilmore in 2007, and in 1993 published his first book, the award-winning Mass Customization: The New Frontier in Business Competition. Each book details Mr. Pine's breakthrough thinking as he has accurately charted many structural shifts -- from individualizing goods to today’s focus on customer experiences and many other changes in the economy and consumer sensibility.
The economic competitive reality of the future is fast-paced change. Mr. Pine helps clients design strategies to leverage these new economic opportunities and create experiences that drive revenue.
Since revolutionizing the way we should approach and think about business with The Experience Economy, Joseph Pine has continued to be at the forefront as a thought leader. In his speaking and teaching activities, Mr. Pine has addressed the World Economic Forum, the original TED conference, and the Consumer Electronics Show. A former Visiting Scholar with the MIT Design Lab, he is currently a Lecturer with the Columbia University School of Professional Studies, and has also taught at Penn State, Duke Corporate Education, the University of Minnesota, UCLA's Anderson Graduate School of Management, and the Harvard Design School. He serves on the editorial boards of Strategy & Leadership and Strategic Direction and is a Senior Fellow with both the Design Futures Council and the European Centre for the Experience Economy, which he co-founded.
Mr. Pine's experiences prior to co-founding Strategic Horizons include holding a variety of technical and managerial positions with IBM.

About Sandeep Originally from Kolkata, India, Sandeep Maity is currently serving at Compassion International as an International Trip Planner and leader. He lives in Colorado Springs, CO. He is married to his beautiful wife, Kristina, and they have a baby girl named Mayla. With a degree in hospitality management, Sandeep previously worked as a travel coordinator for a soccer club.
Raised in extreme poverty and, at times, living homeless on the streets, Sandeep’s childhood in Kolkata was marked with great sorrow, hopelessness and despair. Often going without food, clothing and shelter, he felt unlovable and forgotten. When he was 7 years old, he was introduced to Compassion and its child development program at a local church — and that’s when everything began to change for him. Through the practical support he received and the loving encouragement from his sponsors, hope broke through the darkness and Sandeep discovered God’s matchless love. Being sponsored through Compassion made it possible for him to receive an education and a university degree, through which he began dreaming of a new future for himself and his family.
Sandeep is honored to continue to partner with Compassion as an International Trip Leader. He leads International trips for Compassion International and is very passionate about pastoral and discipleship training in India. What a gift to help change others’ lives through the organization that changed his own life! He courageously shares his personal story to infuse hope in others who feel forgotten, shine light on the challenges of poverty, and mobilize difference-makers.
