Episode 36: Filmmaker Drew Gabreski on Fear and Recruiting
On this Halloween 2017 edition of the College Recruiting Weekly podcast, we talk to filmmaker Drew Gabreski about fear...why does our society like it so much, how does it motivate us, and what are the ways coaches can ethically and professionally use fear in recruiting.
Gabreski runs his own production companies, Speedwell Productions and Darkshed. He released his first suspense-thriller feature film, "Be Afraid", in 2017 and is in the process of writing an upcoming horror film. Along with his growing expertise in the suspense thriller genre, he is also one of the leading producers of video for the athletes and stars of mixed martial arts, and has done work on several network and studio productions.

Episode 35: Recruiting Inner-City Prospects to Small, Rural Campuses
Many college coaches from rural or suburban campuses, with a largely white population, hesitate to try and recruit inner-city student-athletes to their programs.
"Why would they want to come here? It's so different from where they grew up."
"There's nothing to do here compared to the city they're from."
"They probably don't have the grades to be admitted here, because their high school isn't in a very good area."
Sound familiar?
In this episode of the College Recruiting Weekly podcast, we talk to Miles Smith, the head men's basketball coach at Johnson State College in northern Vermont. He coaches at a small, liberal arts school in a small, mostly white college town up in the mountains a little more than an hour outside of Burlington.
And all Coach Smith does is consistently recruit inner-city kids to come to his little school in Vermont and play basketball for him.
So what's his secret? That's what today's show is all about. Prepare to have an honest, creative conversation about recruiting, race, and college athletics. We don't solve all of the country's problems in this episode, but we'll give you some new approaches and fresh thinking on an often difficult-to-navigate topic we all seem to be hearing a lot about these days.

Episode 34: USA Today's Dan Wolken on the Unfolding Recruiting Scandal
The recruiting scandal that broke in late September of 2017 rocked the college sports world.
News that the FBI had indicted a number of coaches who engaged in illegal recruiting activities tied to payments made to prospects' families by shoe companies in exchange for playing for those coaches' schools.
For insights on the origins of this scandal, and how it affects the future of college athletics, we turned to Dan Wolken of the USA Today. Dan is a favorite of Tudor Collegiate Strategies, a former NCRC speaker, and a leading college sports reporter and columnist.
Every college coach should follow Dan Wolken on Twitter at @danwolken for his ongoing reporting and insights.

Episode 33: What Happens When You Change Your Campus Recruiting Visits?
That's the question one Division I coach asked when he heard us outline a research-based alternative during one of our workshops at his former college.
Could something drastically better result just by making a few simple changes?
Yes.
In this episode, Dan Tudor bumps into a coach who had heard us describe that scenario, took the leap, made those changes, and then saw the results.
He'll outline those for you in today's show.

Episode 31: Do Your Recruits Still Care About Email?
Well, do they?
Yes.
In this episode, we bring an actual conversation to you between Dan Tudor and a coach who called in asking questions about how to handle email correspondence with their top recruits. Dan paused the phone call, switched everything over to the podcast, and what followed was nearly an hour of fascinating information and insights on what happens when you do email the right way with your recruits, how to use it to guide your top recruits towards your program, and other interesting Q&A.
If you're wondering how to use email to recruit your prospects, this show with an anonymous college coach is going to be something you'll learn from.

Episode 30: Joe Collins on How Coaches Can Tell Better Stories
At the core of every good recruiting campaign is a story.
If we've worked with you as a coach, or done a workshop at your athletic department, you know the emphasis we put on telling a great story to your recruits. It's what gets them to make a decision to choose you over their other options.
On today's episode, we talk to internationally respected story-telling coach Joe Collins. He works with companies to help them develop their stories and brands, creating more effective sales campaigns for the clients that rely upon him.
Today, he applies those secrets to the challenging world of college sports recruiting.
Download this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, or Stitcher...AND, tell your fellow coaches to listen to the show and subscribe!
Thanks, Coach. Oh and by the way, a coach asked me recently who the band is that we use for all of our music on the show. The band is called The Mob, and they were featured on Episode 23 (one of our most popular) when we talked to a rock-n-roll musician who had to leave the world of Top 40 hits and dive into a sales career. If you haven't listened to that one, go back and listen now. It's great! (And, enjoy the music...classic 1970's stuff!)

P.S. Do you ever listen all the way to the very very very end of the podcast, after the music fades out?....
