Life gets busy. Things happen. Jens and Lukas were unable to record this week. Luckily they have this little gem that was recorded on Sunday, February 16th. "This goose is cooked!" Where does this phrase come from? It is attributed to the story of Jan Hus (Hus is Czech for goose). Jan Hus was a fascinating figure who was in many ways a forerunner to the Reformers we are familiar with. Living over a century before the Reformation began, Hus worked for reform in the Czech Church to push back against abuses of power and neglect of doctrine. In the early 20th century, a group of pastors, professors, and theologians contributed about 90 essays to a project known as The Fundamentals. These essays were mailed out all over the country in order to combat modernist theology and defend traditional expressions of Christian doctrine. Nicholas Ridley was an English bishop, reformer, and martyr who had a passion for renewal in his church. While he served as a bishop in the Church of England he worked closely with the famous Thomas Cranmer, as well as made a reputation for himself as a committed reformer in his own dioceses. Ridley ultimately died a martyr for his commitment to the Reformation, and he has left us a rich narrative of his life and work. Martin Luther’s 95 Theses served as the proverbial “shot heard round the world” for the Protestant Reformation. A complicated man with a long life and career, Luther inadvertently launched the biggest shakeup in the Western church when he tried to address errors and theological problems he perceived in the Roman Church. Most people are familiar with the various atrocities committed by early European settlers in the New World against the indigenous peoples living there. Often these sad events were perpetrated by, or at least allowed by, Christians and people representing the church. Bartolomé de Las Casas represents a refreshing departure from this historical trend.
