254: Is Exposing a Cheater the Right Thing to Do? | Feedback Friday

You recently discovered evidence that your friend of 12 years has a significant other who's nothing but a no-good two-timer. Is it your place to call this out? Is exposing a cheater the right thing to do even if it may ruin your friendship? We'll dig into this and more right here on Feedback Friday! And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Jason DeFillippo (@jpdef) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now let's dive in! Full show notes and resources can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/254. On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Interested in doing some prison time with Jordan next February? It's filling up fast; reach out to prison@jordanharbinger.com for details! You recently uncovered dirt on your friend's significant other as a faithless, two-timing snake. Is exposing this cheater the right thing to do? Recently reconnecting with an old friend, you were shocked to discover they've been diagnosed with a potentially fatal condition. While you're not super close, you want to be of comfort without being awkward. What should you do? New to your field, you'll be attending a networking event with other young professionals and industry veterans soon. What can you do to stand out and be remembered in a good way? You recently angered a friend by unknowingly poking fun at him for being single, but you're so embarrassed and upset with yourself for hurting him that you don't have the courage to apologize bravely and sincerely. How can you make things right? Someone you once considered close has in recent years become cold and judgmental, though you can't point to any event that would constitute a falling out. Others in your circle have noticed, so you're pretty sure it's not just you. What can you do to get to the bottom of this? What's the best way to cope with the psychological toll of starting and running your own business? (Thanks to Brian Clark from Copyblogger for fielding this one!) You consider yourself pretty genuine, so should you even be attempting to network with people you don't like just because they're decent connections within your industry? A friend has become annoyingly needy and narcissistic since breaking off an engagement. How can you break it to them that their behavior has become unacceptable without being heartless? Life Pro Tip: When you're moving, pack a “first day” box with everything you think you'll need right after you arrive. It's annoying to dig through all your boxes for things like modems and hair dryers when you're tired from your move. Recommendation of the Week:

253: Jamie Metzl | Genetic Engineering and the Future of Humanity

Jamie Metzl (@JamieMetzl) is a technology futurist and geopolitical expert, entrepreneur, media commentator, Senior Fellow of the Atlantic Council, and author of Hacking Darwin: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Humanity. What We Discuss with Jamie Metzl: Why the speed at which genetic engineering is progressing is akin to Neil Armstrong stepping foot on the moon just six years after the first flight of the Wright brothers. Why the genetic traits that seem universally beneficial to us today may turn out to be as ephemeral (and useful to humanity) as powdered wigs and skinny jeans. The danger our species faces when we're able to selectively edit out genes that cause disorders without fully understanding their potential benefits or evolutionary purpose (e.g., recessive sickle cell disease carriers' resistance to malaria). Why China — run by a government that values the good of the country over the rights and privacy of its citizens — is better poised than the US and other Western countries to excel in the application of genetic science. Why addressing the values of equity and diversity today is important for avoiding genetic stagnation and greater friction between the haves and have-nots of tomorrow. He is also an author, and his latest book, Creative Calling: Establish a Daily Practice, Infuse Your World with Meaning, and Succeed in Work + Life, is out this week. What We Discuss with Chase Jarvis: Some of the most common barriers to creativity and our pursuit of creative outlets or careers and how to work past these barriers. Why creativity is a habit, not a skill, and what we can do to cultivate this creativity with practice. How even Chase has experienced creative slumps, and what he did to dig himself out of them. The DEAR framework for being able to understand what works in any situation -- by studying the masters who have come before you. The importance of community for sustained success in any endeavor. 251: Help! I Have Two Years Left to Live. | Feedback Friday

Major life changes can be a mixed bag. On one hand, you're over the moon for landing your dream job. On the other hand, being diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer and told by your doctor that you've got two years to live (at best) puts a bit of a damper on the celebration. You're determined to remain positive -- after all, you wouldn't be the first to beat fatalistic odds if this thing were somehow turned around, so there's no harm in being hopeful. You wouldn't say you're lost, but you do want to ensure that you make the most of whatever time you have left -- however long that may be. We can only imagine what you're going through, but on this Feedback Friday we'll do our best to offer how we might spend our time if confronted with the worst news possible -- but armed with your incredibly deep well of positivity. Full show notes and resources can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/251. On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Interested in doing some prison time with Jordan next February? Reach out to prison@jordanharbinger.com for details! How do you make the most of the time you have left with positivity when doctors have given you two years to live? People have preferences about looks, personalities, and religious backgrounds for their significant others. Is wishing they hadn't slept with 100 people before you a valid preference? What does it take for a successful and single 51-year-old woman who travels frequently to find someone with whom to build a family when the dating pool of quality candidates seems so microscopic? While a policy to never pursue romance with a professional connection has served you well in the past, you've met someone who makes you want to reconsider this policy. How might you make your interest known while remaining professional? You'd like to improve the relationship with your parents and the way you communicate. What can you do to make things better? If you wanted to start a new business online without using the topics of your current or past expertise, how would you pick a niche and establish your credibility? (Thanks to Brian Clark from Copyblogger for fielding this one!) While you'll be laid off soon, you're not worried because you have a generous severance and plenty of leads already. How do you network without people assuming you're just trying to get a job through their connections? Aside from buying decent mics and recording in a space that's not echoey as hell, what advice do we have for someone just starting out with podcasting? (One:

250: Nir Eyal | Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life

Nir Eyal (@nireyal) is a behavioral designer who helps companies design products that move people, and helps people design their own behavior using the principles of consumer psychology. He is the author of Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products and Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life. This is Nir's second appearance on the show (check out his first time here). What We Discuss with Nir Eyal: Why time management is quite literally pain management, and the time you plan to waste is not wasted time. How the issues caused by technology today aren't dissimilar to the issues caused by technology that vexed Aristotle and Socrates thousands of years ago. Why you'll probably find the popular advice to try digital detox as a way to rid yourself of technology's influence over your life about as effective as a fad diet. The damage caused by accepting the media's spin on technology as a pervasive addiction over which we have no control, and what we can do to get the best of these tools without letting them get the best of us. How to nurture your child's healthy relationship with technology by empowering them with an understanding of its opportunity costs. And much more... 249: Kobe Bryant | Dissecting the Mamba Mentality

Kobe Bryant (@kobebryant) is most known for his 20 years on the basketball court as one of the game's most iconic legends. He now focuses his famous tenacity on running Granity Studios, an award-winning multimedia company devoted to creating new ways to tell stories around sports -- like Legacy and the Queen with Annie Matthew. What We Discuss with Kobe Bryant: What creativity and basketball have in common and what Kobe has carried from the court to his new business. Lessons Kobe has learned from people who are the best at what they do — from Taylor Swift to Jony Ive to Sean Penn to Kate Winslet to Larry Moss to Oprah to George R.R. Martin. How Kobe manages pressure in high stakes situations on the court and at the head of a creative content studio. The music that gets Kobe in the mindset he needs to excel at whatever he does. The importance of learning how to negotiate with yourself in order to achieve greatness, and how parents might help their kids develop this crucial skill. 248: How to Navigate Around a Hostile Coworker | Feedback Friday

You have a hostile coworker undermining you before management at every opportunity. How can you ensure facts will speak up for you instead of your coworker's toxic fabrications? Never fear! We'll show you how to navigate around a hostile coworker on this Feedback Friday! Full show notes and resources can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/248 On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: A Detroit vagrant in his 40s probably has enough problems to deal with. Can any good come from pressing charges against him because he tried (and failed) to steal your laptop? You have a hostile coworker undermining you before management at every opportunity. How can you ensure facts will speak up for you instead of your coworker's toxic fabrications? You hear of coworkers getting a promotion because they're "smart." What does it mean to be smart? Is being smart related to IQ? Is it related to emotional intelligence? Is it related to street smarts? Or is it a combination of all of these? As a business owner in a new country who's pioneered your own niche, how do you avoid a race to the bottom in pricing and remain high in quality as competition attempts to elbow into your turf? Is it ever good to name drop when networking? How can you continue to network and problem solve for your peers, but also start to lay the foundation of credibility with your accomplishments to build future -- and likely new leadership positions -- at your company? You reached out to someone in your chosen field, and you were referred to two others who have agreed to meet with you. How can you use the FEW technique effectively when these meetings happen? Is it worth the ROI to obtain expensive credentials (like an MBA) early in your career? Or is charging forward to gain experience more beneficial? Life Pro Tip: When you get a scammy/spammy phone call, tell them: "I think you have the wrong number...this is a government office." Alternatively, you can play this sound into the phone to possibly get removed from the system's rotation. 247: Chris Bailey | Hyperfocus Secrets for Better Productivity

Chris Bailey (@chris_bailey) is a productivity expert, host of the Becoming Better Podcast, and the bestselling author of two books about productivity: Hyperfocus, and The Productivity Project. In the time it's taken you to read this, he's probably written another. What We Discuss with Chris Bailey: The neurochemical reason our brains switch focus every 40 seconds (or less) and what we can do to recapture this hit to our overall productivity. Why giving yourself the time to unfocus productively with what Chris calls scatterfocus is as crucial to your progress as hyperfocus. How Chris harnesses scatterfocus to mull over and solve complicated problems without distraction. What Chris learned by deliberately allowing himself to enter a state of boredom for an hour a day for an entire month (and how he did so creatively). What the attention overload gap is, the problems it can cause, and why we're more susceptible to it than we probably suspect. And much more... 246: Wendy Behary | Disarming the Narcissist

Wendy Behary (@donsanddivas) has been training professionals and supervising psychotherapists for more than 20 years, and is the author of Disarming the Narcissist: Surviving and Thriving with the Self-Absorbed. What We Discuss with Wendy Behary: What's the difference between someone who comes off as somewhat self-absorbed and a full-blown, clinical narcissist? Is clinical narcissism actually on the rise in the US? If so, what’s causing it? Does narcissism statistically affect men more than women, or is there just a difference in how they tend to express it? When a little bit of narcissism can be a big advantage.  How to tell early on if you’re dealing with a bona fide narcissist, what you can do to remain your best self in their presence, and how you might possibly help them become their better selves. And much more... 245: Is Your Boyfriend Cheating on You with Porn? | Feedback Friday

When your significant other agreed to stop watching porn early in your relationship, you were relieved. But now that you've been dating for a few years and everything's otherwise great, you can't shake the feeling that they haven't quite given up porn and it feels like a betrayal. Is porn cheating? On this Feedback Friday, we do our best to get some perspective on this and much more! Full show notes and resources can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/245. On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Due to your own complicated history, your significant other's possible consumption of porn feels like betrayal. Is there a way to understand it from a different perspective? You spent six years training for your dream job only to be disqualified on a technicality. How can you motivate yourself to endure a similar time sink for another career when you know you're not getting any younger? As a business owner, how do you deal with the deadbeats who take advantage of your good nature and don't respect what you do enough to give you fair value for your services? How do people transition from the period of time they need to get experience in their field to the time they get paid for making use of that experience? Your significant other wants you to list the names of the people you've dated and slept with in the past, and then delete them all from your social media. Is this at all reasonable? You assumed you were having an email conversation regarding a business proposition with a man you know named Sam, but it turns out it's been with a woman named Sam whom you don't remember meeting. Now what? You're normally a great conversationalist, but when it comes to interacting with a superior, you find yourself worrying too much about accidentally saying the wrong thing and the conversation ends up stagnating. How might you overcome this? Life Pro Tip: Looking to cut the cord but dreading the inevitable call to the cable company where they badger you into not leaving? Tell them you're moving out of state where they don't offer services. Your cancellation call will take a fraction of the time.
