Located 100km above sea level, this boundary is what separates aeronautics from astronautics. The Russian cosmonauts who flew on the Soyuz 11 mission to board the world’s first space station in 1971, were victims of an unfortunate series of mechanical failures which led to the fatal depressurization of their crew capsule. The three cosmonauts, Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsayev, are listed as the only humans to have died in space.
