318 - Is Race Car Sponsorship a Smart Marketing Strategy?
I LOVE it when I get seeded! I was seeded a little while back from long time listener Steve Keil from The Laser Group to go to a corporate race day with a Porsche V8 Supercar that The Laser Group sponsors. I think it's fair to say that this episode is the highest octane, adrenalin pumping full throttle show I have ever produced. Have you ever wondered what the ROI on sponsoring a race car is? I've often wondered what the point was in having your logo on a race car that was belting down the race track at 200 km/hr. Is it really good brand awareness? Is it really worth the money? How much does it cost anyway? In this episode I take you along for the ride (literally). I had a microphone on me all day and interviewed Steve Keil about why he decided to sponsor a race car, and it may not be the reasons you think. I also had the chance to interview V8 supercar racing legend Steve Richards about his car which is his business and his approach to obtaining great sponsors. I spoke to some Laser Group staff and some of their clients to really get the full picture on the whole racing car sponsorship thing. By the end of this episode if nothing else you will be entertained. You will also have a clearer picture of what it means to sponsor a racing car and a whole new perspective on staff and client engagement. The verdict? I'm all for it! Thanks so much to Steve Keil and The Laser Group for seeding me, and also Steve Richards for keeping me alive! Enjoy this one team, I know I did! 317 - Should You Sell Your Business and Follow Your Passion?
Have you ever thought to yourself… Should I sell my business, pack everything up and just hit the road? Well I have found a guy that has done just that and is literally living the dream. He and his wife owned and ran a printing business for 12 years. They were in the daily grind, employing staff, constantly keeping the wheels turning to pay the bills. Then one day they decided to pack up, sell up and go on a 16 month road trip around this beautiful country with their two young children and you wouldn’t believe it… This trip spawned a whole new business. In this fireside chat we cover: The motivation behind creating the documentary 'The Big Lap" How to create content even when you have no experience Content marketing on steroids How to use Facebook advertising to drive traffic to your website then sales Re-marketing on facebook Building a community I also cover a marketing question from ME. I've been bugged by a particular SEO question for months. When you create a piece of content for your website you should write around a specific keyword or key phrase. As you know I cover a wide range of small business marketing topics on each and every episode so I'm often stumped as to what should be the 'focus keyword'. So I turned to SEO expert and past guest of the show Rand Fishkin from Moz. *GEEK ALERT* Here's Rand's response: There's not much metadata required these days. The page title, meta description, and any schema markup (https://moz.com/learn/seo/schema-structured-data) that applies, and that's pretty much it. If you're looking for more on how on-page SEO works these days, check out https://moz.com/blog/on-page-seo-8-principles-whiteboard-friday If your challenge is more choosing what to make the focus keywords, my advice would be to think about the problem the podcast/shownotes solve for people, and what folks might search for that would result in them being extremely happy to find that particular show. A tool like Keyword Explorer (from Moz) or Ubersuggest (which is free) might help, too. Geek is Chic! If this makes no sense to you feel free to send this to your web developer to help you out. I started this show without any interviewing experience. I talk about this in my book, plus there’s a chapter on video content ideas. Use original content as a way to get people inside your business (in Steve's case, his website). Focus on creating insanely helpful content and the clicks (and sales) will follow. Promote that content on Facebook - whether it be a boosted post or Facebook ads. This can be more effective than going for the direct sale. 316 – How this Rock n' Roller knocked back a world famous superstar to stay authentic in business
It is not very often that you get to meet an authentic business owner who is part of the fabric of an entire culture. James Young lives and breathes rock and roll. James bought Melbourne's Cherry Bar originally as a vanity purchase so that he would always be able to get into his favourite rock and roll bar. Since then he has re-named the street on which it resides to AC/DC lane and attracts some of the biggest names in rock and roll to perform side shows in his dark and shadey, 200 person bar.Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/marketingpodcastSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

315 - A look inside Work Club, an exclusive co-working space designed to ignite creativity & inspiration
10 years ago I had an idea to create a co-working space. My idea was along the lines of Qantas Club meets your home office. This interview is with a guy who not only had the same idea but has executed with passion and courage. And now … I'm a client of his! Work Club is redefining the whole idea of co-working, serviced offices and business clubs by focusing on the workspace as a whole. Owner and founder Soren Trampedach is passionate about functional design, diversity and furniture. Soren has consulted and continues to consult on workplace optimisation and trends for some really big players like Google, Microsoft and Deloitte so he knows a thing or two about how to create an inspirational place to work. He also has a tonne of courage. Ever since the beginning of Work Club they have remained exclusive, only taking a limited number of people from any given industry. That has meant saying no to a lot of potential clients. Soren reminds his staff that compromising on their values is like peeing in your pants. It might feel nice in the beginning but it soon becomes cold and smelly. In this chat we discuss: Soren's theory on Leonardo DaVinci and diversity Functional design for workspaces The importance of beautiful furniture The art of story telling The importance of intention in every little thing you do The business failings that lead to Work Club The power of a community and his version of TED – The Florence Guild Also, a big thank you to everyone who has tweeted @VirginAustralia about your excitement that your favourite marketing podcast will be aired from 35,000 feet in the air. It’s never too late to get excited and I’d love for you to tweet them if you haven’t already. I defer a listener question to good friend and original co-host of Australia’s best marketing podcastLuke Moulton from Plankton Digital about whether or not you should post videos to Youtube or Facebook. Yep, another big show today. Let's do it!Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/marketingpodcastSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

313 - Taking bikinis off the stage of Miss Universe NZ was the key to fixing this toxic business
Nigel Godfrey - raconteur and owner of the rights to Miss Universe New Zealand has taken a toxic business that had a globally recognised brand and turned it around. It has been described as the greatest turn around of any territory in the last 25 years and he's done it all in under 3 years. We also discuss how as a culture we don't celebrate entrepreneurs enough. We go crazy over sports and hold them up as role models and we don't do that for business owners and entrepreneurs but we should. In this fireside chat we talk about: How to fix a toxic business Why entrepreneurs should be celebrated How to attract sponsorship when you have little to offer The power of Facebook to attract sponsors and build a brand The bigger picture - how Miss Universe has become rewarding for Nigel and the contestants Plus I have another testimonial for my book The Boomerang Effect and I crowdsource a listener question: What’s the greatest tip you have seen for a ‘hair on fire’ emergency business such as an emergency plumber or electrician? Here are some of my tips: Cover your car in fridge magnets and park it somewhere where there’s high foot traffic Place a sticker somewhere obvious on the appliance I’ve gone and crowdsourced the answers (Facebook): John Hawes: Simple, fast, beautiful, responsive website. Lee Young: Hold fun and interactive sessions at schools around electrical safety the kids then go home and tell Mum & Dad about this crazy sparky guy who showed them how electricity works and why it’s dangerous. Hunter Leonard: If it's a hair on fire emergency business, you gotta wonder whose hair on fire emergency well-handled would gain the most publicity. Do you fix the Kardashians bathroom sink that's clogged with all that black hair colour, or Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's toilet on the election tour bus (no hair in that! what goes on in that tour bus?!). I'd opt for fixing a famous person or famous bloggers drain and then getting them to tell their world about it! Brendan McNally: Get clear on your keywords then create landing pages for each one blocked drains, burst hot water service etc. Don't forget to have some quality ‘helpful’ content on your main site around after hours emergencies, around each specific emergency call out, i.e. How to reset the Safety switch; or How to turn off your mains water. Let’s lose the tall poppy rubbish and start to place the people who create extraordinary businesses on pedestals. It’s certainly what I try to do with this show. If you find yourself with a toxic business where things aren’t coming together then pull out the whiteboard and mind map all the different parts of the business. Make hard decisions around what or who to keep and let go of. You can’t please everyone. If you try to then you’ll mean nothing to no one. Pick a niche and chase after it. They’ll love you, even if no one else does! INSPIRATIONAL MARKETING QUOTE In ~1920, self?help author Robert Collier once said … “Tell him what to do. Tell him to put his name on the enclosed card, stamp and mail it. Or pin his check or dollar bill to this letter and return it in the enclosed envelope.” What's the lesson? People need to be told what to do. Be sure to have a clear call to action (CTA) on every piece of marketing you create. Look at eBay’s ‘Add To Cart’ button ? you can’t miss it. The big guys have spent millions researching the heck out of consumer behaviour so you don’t have to. Just observe and copy what works for your business. Ask yourself ... ‘what do you want someone to do having read, watched, or listened to a piece of your marketing?’ The obvious answer is to buy from you ... but buyer behaviour isn’t that simple, there may be a few steps in between your marketing and a purchase. So consider these other calls to action: ? Register their interest ? Give you their contact details g. Email, phone ? Share it via social media ? 311 – Beef ice-cream, Mercedes chauffeured pick-up, a water fun park … All for your Dog. Woof woof!
You’ve heard the saying - ‘Build it and they will come’ but we all know that’s rarely the case. However, if you build it and market it then they are much more likely to come. This week we have Marcus Nicholls from Akuna Pet Resorts who is not scared of taking big risks; and he’s able to because he now understands the power of marketing and of being crystal clear on his perfect client. But that wasn't always the case. The post 311 – Beef ice-cream, Mercedes chauffeured pick-up, a water fun park … All for your Dog.
