Don't let mom know how much Mountain Dew you drank or how long you spent playing Jazz Jackrabbit because you're the only kid in the whole school who plays Doom and you don't want to mess that up. You've got your whole life ahead of you and based on the DOS games you've played there is reason to believe the future is going to be pretty sweet. After all, love and success came to the intelligent, the clever, quick-witted, laser blasting, star fighter flying, helmet wearing nerd-kid like Luke Skywalker, but without all the dopey religion and Pepsi instead. It was the 90s and the Satanic panic was coming to a close but the temptation and promise of becoming your own god was now upon the horizon and in the face of a persistent game-layer and ubiquity of digital landscapes there looms the possibility of now of total immersion within a virtual reality preferable in almost every way to "reality proper" for vast swathes of the population who face, day in and day out the demiurgic reality of growing old, becoming sick, mentally ill, poor of time or spending money, addicted to drugs, heart-broken, depressed or just stupid there exists the promise of affordable escape into a world of our choosing, one where we decide what happens and our dreams may be fulfilled, at least partially.
