Over the course of 15 years, Alynda Segarra has been constantly pushing and evolving the sound of their band Hurray for the Riff Raff as well as the boundaries of folk music. For her first in-studio session for KEXP, Lady Wray brought a stacked set of songs off her years-in-the-making 2022 record Piece of Me. Produced by Leon Michels of El Michels Affair, the album is a brilliant blend of soul, R&B and hip hop and just the latest release in her long and winding career. With her debut album Collapsed in Sunbeams released at the very beginning of 2021 and the world being what it was then, Parks played a Live At Home session for KEXP shortly after its release. Luckily, in March, the British musician was able to make a stop at the KEXP studios to play songs off the Grammy-nominated, Mercury Prize-winning album as well as her recently released single “Softly,” the making of which she explains to Larry Mizell Jr. in this episode of Live on KEXP. Chicago-based Bnny released their debut record, ‘Everything,’ in 2021 to rave reviews as a chronicle of love and loss. The project of Jessica Vicius, ‘Everything’ was made in the wake of and inspired by the loss of her partner Trey Gruber in 2017. Vicius spoke with Cheryl Waters about finding vulnerability through music and embodying elements of her late partner’s personality before jumping into a haunting set of songs off the record.
