I am responsible!

Episode #593 January 05, 2018 –  We all have two choices in life: accept life as it is or accept responsibility to change it. Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show. Questions: What are some examples of a large financial shovel? Can having goals in your 7 life areas help with my depression? Should I leave my job 3 years before my retirement package starts? I have two degrees in areas I’m not interested in, I don’t want to ever work for an employer again, but I need to make money now. Plus Good News Quotation: “If you own this story you get to write the ending.”  ― Brené Brown“ Show Notes: In this week’s Podcast, Dan talks about how taking responsibility can change your life. 1:50 – We all have two choices in life: to accept life as it is or accept responsibility to change it. “Everything you do today creates a scene in the movie of your life. What script are you writing?” 4:04 – Dan shares how entrepreneurs are taking advantage of Freshbooks. Find out more on Dan’s blog. 8:36 – Dan shares News stories like Apple Batteries for older devices for $29, and thoughts on 18 states increasing the minimum wage. 11:08 – Good News — Share your good news at askdan@48days.com Resources for Young Farmers 15:15 – Dan shares a follow-up on a 19-year-old who wanted to farm and was looking for resources to get started. We received several resources, including some from Sam, like: 5 Elements To Making 100,000 on a 1/4 Acre of Land A farmer who helps you qualify for a loan through an apprenticeship 17:30 – Keith, a listener who struggles with depression, asks Dan if he agrees that having goals in all 7 areas of your life can help when you hit a career or job issue. 20:00 – Dan shares a resource for creative folks who may be dealing with depression:  http://www.creativesagainstdepression.com/ Large Financial Shovels 20:28 – Paul asks for more examples of large financial shovels, like real estate. Dan shares 4 more: Write a book Develop a course Build a membership site Invent something 28:10 – A 52-year-old listener is yearning to become an entrepreneur but it only 3 years from retiring with a pension. Should he wait it out? 31:47 – A listener with a background in IT is having no success finding a job in theology. Dan cautions him to think about his theology or mission work as a sideline vs. a front line area of focus. 33:40 – Dan shares Nathan’s story. He wanted to be a missionary in China after graduating college. But instead of asking for donations to fund his missionary work, he went as an English teacher and paid for everything on his own and was actually able to do more missionary work because he was less restricted as a teacher. Take Responsibility For Your Own Success 36:46 – One listener shares that he has two degrees but doesn’t want to work in either of those fields. He has lost jobs and doesn’t want to work for an employer again and doesn’t know what to do because he needs to make money fast. Dan says: “When you back yourself into a corner, don’t expect somebody else to force you into success. Your mindset, your own expectations and accepting responsibility for where you are are critical to your success in life.” Your personal skills often preclude the value of your technical skills or degrees.
