48: Justin Scheck | Blood & Oil – MBS Ruthless Quest For Global Power, Saudi Arabia & Narrative Journalism

Article Attached To This Podcast Here 🎙️: https://atlasgeographica.com/justin-scheck-blood-and-oil/The narrative of MBS is relatively straightforward – a monarch who has seen his country thrive of oil wealth, looks into the future and see a world where both fossil fuels and social inequality are a thing of the past. MBS being the visionary with the deep pockets exacts his wealth and influence to make a change transitioning Saudi Arabia from a state that relies on oil to one that relies on solar and other renewables. So the narrative is simple, but it is the details that are complex. With the monarchy growing at an exponential rate – yes, exponential family growth – the limitations of Saudi geography, the complexity of international influence, the role of social media and the pressures of trying to maintain balance and order, the easily understood vision of MBS is met by hundreds of divergent paths he can barely hang on to. Find the book here.In this podcast, you can expect to learn…A brief history of Saudi Arabia. How MBS spends his billions.A bit about the implications of Kashoggi. What MBS true skills and qualities are.The role of McKinsey, BCG and the rest in Saudi Arabia.+ much, much more.Jump In On My Newsletter 📋 🔑 - https://atlasgeographica.com/subscribeFeel Free To Peruse My 📷 Instagram & Twitter 🐦 Mates!-----00:00 – Introduction04:34 – How Much Did You Think About The Narrative Journalism Style & Co-Authorship For The Book?11:29 – Exciting & Ongoing White Collar Crime Investigations14:08 – Introducing Saudi Arabia Beyond The Caricature23:21 – The Unusual Labour Force Of Saudi Arabia31:48 – Is MBS’s Cultural Reformation BS?43:09 – Is MBS admiration for Alexander The Great & Machiavelli Ominous?58:54 – Egregious Saudi Prince Spending1:04:39 – Using Neon To Explain MBS Ambition1:13:39 – How Saudi Aramco Is Much More Than Just An Oil Company1:16:09 – MBS Ongoing Disatsifaction With Management Consultants + Celebrity Influence1:28:39 – Is MBS A Figure For Good?1:31:34 – Which Country Are You Most Bullish On?1:32:25 – A Conversation Between Any Two People Of History1:34:00 – My Afterthougts-----Are you into Nassim Taleb? 47: Christian Busch | How To Invite & Cultivate Serendipity Into Your Life, Nassim Taleb & The Serendipity Mindset

Article Attached To This Podcast Here 🎙️: https://atlasgeographica.com/christian-busch-serendipity/Life can be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards. How can we predict a future of infinite possibilities based on a finite experience of the past? An unpredictable future is both exciting as well as daunting however an altogether inescapable fact. There is too much beyond our control for predictability. And so you can choose to either continue to ride down the river of randomness, being pulled back and forth according to the current, or you can instead invite serendipity into your life and introduce an infinite amount of divergent paths - the paths will still be entirely random and largely unpredictable, but they will at least increase the likelihood of bliss and also return some agency to your direction.Along the lines of Taleb's fooled by randomness metaphor - we all cross the busy street every day - and although some fools will occasionally make it to the other side, blindfolded to the world while others who meticulously path their way will still be wiped out - noticing the serendipity, noticing the infinite potential of divergent paths, at least this returns to you the liberty of control and hopefully, if your lucky, an exposure to serendipity that can change your life precisely the way you dreamt it would. There is much to this podcast, in it, you can expect to learn about...Frederick Hayek on SerendipityThe opportunity cost of always optimising for SerendipityAn international look at how different cultures experience randomnessSome Nassim Taleb of courseAnd then finally I ask Christian for some advice (you will see, forcing a type of serendipity)Jump In On My Newsletter 📋 🔑 - https://atlasgeographica.com/subscribeFeel Free To Peruse My 📷 Instagram & Twitter 🐦 Mates!-----00:00 - Introduction04:54 - Distinction Between Randomness & Serendipity09:14 - Hayek On Serendipity16:44 - Great Anecdotes Of Serendipity From History17:44 - The Opportunity Cost Of Always Optimising For Serendipity24:49 - How Serendipity Is Understood Across Different Cultures35:24 - On Cultivating Serendipity39:54 - Introducing Nassim Taleb, The Birthday Paradox & Exponential Functions49:06 - Optimising Serendipity For A Hypothetical Person59:00 - Afterthoughts-----Are you into Nassim Taleb?
