In our conversation, Pernille discusses the reality that we won’t always be able to reach every student in precisely the ways we hope to. She recounts the bullying that her daughter experienced in third grade, and the incredible meeting with Pink that helped to breathe new confidence and optimism into her daughter’s outlook and self-identity. She defines the purpose that lies at the core of her legendary blogging activities, and articulates the political (non-partisan) nature of books that speak for the marginalized. ANDY MILNE is a charismatic PE educator who has hopped the pond from London to Chicago! He’s also a speaker, blogger, and was named 2017 Health Ed Teacher of the Year.

In our conversation, Andy shares about the experience of leaving education for a period of time in order to rethink his purpose and core identity. 83 - Travis Jordan: Connection Over Conformity
TRAVIS JORDAN is a husband, father of four, superintendent, education commissioner, speaker, aspiring author, conformity breaker, and status quo shaker. How’s that for disruption in education?
In our conversation, Travis shares a tragic story from his learning community, explaining how the passing of one student has forever impacted him and put the focus on connections over content. “This is not a job - it’s a calling,” he says. Travis also dismisses the idea of educators faking it until they make it. “Why not be real and feel and let our students and colleagues let us heal?” When he thinks of building leaders in his learning community, he asks his team members to encourage, empower, and empathize with everyone in their care. As we close out our conversation, Travis also shares a few of the voices and resources that shape his thinking and inspire his professional practice today.

TARA MARTIN is an educator, administrator, coach, and speaker. She’s also the founder of #BookSnaps, the @DBC_Inc Media & Communications Director, and author of Be REAL: Educate from the Heart.
In our conversation, Tara shares about a tragedy that struck her family during her very first year of teaching, and describes the difficult journey and surprising breakthroughs that followed as a result. KEVIN O’SHEA is a primary teacher currently in Beijing, China who will be moving to a school in Shenzhen, China in the fall. Kevin is a big fan of nature, outdoor education, inquiry, and photography. He’s also the producer of the Just Japan Podcast and the new Making Better Teachers Podcast.
In our conversation, Kevin recalls the time he assigned differentiated work to his students - only to experience a nightmare that tempted him to leave education entirely. He discusses the mission and vision of his new Making Better Teachers podcast, and explains how past years of content creation have led him to this point. Karen also shares some of her practices on Seesaw, one of several good online portfolio platforms that connect parents with student learning, and she describes some of her passions and goals in the area of student literacy.
