  For today’s conversation, we’re sitting down with actress Lesley-Ann Brandt. Her journey begins in South Africa, where she grew up during the final years of Apartheid. She shares what it was like growing up in institutionalized segregation and how, at 17 years old, her family left the country to move to New Zealand. It was here where she discovered her desire to be on screen, and also where she booked her first series role. Since she’s known for her work on shows like Gotham, Single Ladies, Spartacus, and for her portrayal of Mazikeen on the hit show Lucifer.  She shares how she made it to the states, found a manager, endured lots of no’s, and made countless sacrifices so she could create a life telling stories on screen. Everything we perceive, interpret, and ultimately feel in life is filtered through our five senses, and stored in our subconscious with sense memory. Our imaginations are fueled by life experiences. Building our emotional muscles to their full potential is just as important as developing our physical and vocal muscles. This is the key to both our physical and emotional life as actors. But after realizing that a life practicing law wasn’t at all like what he’d seen on TV, he discovered his love for acting—which as he shares, served his desire for attention, but also to disappear into becoming other people----which he has now done for the past 25 years. From his roles in Twilight, Nurse Jackie, and Can’t Hardly Wait, to all the jobs that didn’t quite work out, we chat about the subjectivity of art and how one seemingly “lost” job can open the door to even greater opportunities.
