WEDNESDAY WISDOM: Depression — with Alyshia Ochse

“I am bent, but not broken. I am scarred, but not disfigured. I am sad, but not hopeless. I am tired, but not powerless. I am angry, but not bitter. I am depressed, but not giving up.” Giving up when you have a mental illness like depression sounds attractive in your darkest moments. Today we discuss all feelings and allowing them to be part of the conversation. As an artist, you must understand and experience all emotions/feelings without judgement. Oge Egbuonu discussed in the previous episode “I don’t label depression as a bad thing for me. For me, those are all moments of redirection.” If you are struggling with mental health or suicidal thoughts please see the FREE help that is available at ActorsFund.org.   LINKS: Please subscribe to That One Audition on Apple Podcasts and follow us on social media: SELF-TAPE TO BOOKING: Audition Process Post-Quarantine STORY SCHOOL: Because you have a story to tell and the world needs to hear it. S2 011: Oge Egbuonu — (In)Visible Portraits: Love Letter to Black Women, and a Re-Education to Everyone Else

Today we’re sitting down with Oge Egbuonu. She’s a director, writer, producer—a storyteller. A voice that’s piercing the veil of what history has shown a Black woman’s experience in America to be. Her directorial debut, (In)Visible Portraits, was just released on Juneteenth. It’s a Think Piece, a self-described “love letter to Black women, and a re-education to everyone else.” Oge shares how she found herself in the middle of creating this film, aware of its bigger purpose in being a vehicle for people to start questioning what they were taught to believe as true. Her journey to becoming a filmmaker is beautifully unconventional—from working in a hotel, to discovering a calling in teaching yoga, to accepting an unexpected job at Raindog Films where she helped bring to life Eye in the Skye (starring Helen Mirren and Alan Rickman) and the award-winning film Loving (starring Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton). Each plot twist of her story shows a divine calling and a desire to be a vessel of service. Oge reminds us that we’re in a collective space of reimagining what’s possible, and that is the most powerful place we can be in right now. WEDNESDAY WISDOM: Reframing — with Nyaling Marenah & Alyshia Ochse

This Wednesday Wisdom is not going to be a monologue but a dialogue (with actress Nyaling Marenah) to help understand, forgive and give rise to a new language and awareness when addressing selection/casting in our industry. "They went diverse/ethnic..." how many times has this explanation been given for not getting the part? This podcast exists so we could learn, share, listen and understand the path of another. Today we are going to hear why that statement is hurtful and only doing harm in bringing someone else's value down. Let's reframe our words and belief system so that we can respect each others value as a storyteller. #sharethemic LINKS: Please subscribe to That One Audition on Apple Podcasts and follow us on social media: INSTAGRAM: @nyalingm SELF-TAPE TO BOOKING: Audition Process Post-Quarantine STORY SCHOOL: Because you have a story to tell and the world needs to hear it. S2 010: Jasmine Cephas Jones — Art Is Not Made In Safety

Today I sit down with television and film actress, Broadway star, and singer-songwriter, Jasmine Cephas Jones. Introduced into the world of entertainment by her father, actor Ron Cephas Jones, and her mother, jazz singer Kim Lesley, Jasmine went to school for the performing arts starting in middle school . She spent many years studying voice at LaGuardia High School in New York City as well as throughout her college years at Berklee College of Music. Today, Jasmine shares the feelings of vulnerability that came soon after where she felt something was missing and was unsure about exactly what kind of career she wanted to pursue. When she realized the missing link she had been searching for was acting, Jasmine immediately committed to studying the craft through experience with the LABrinth Theater Company and training in the Meisner teachings of the Neighborhood Playhouse for Theater. She shares her experiences with the peaks and valleys of the business, from being dropped by an agent, to landing the roles of Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds in the Tony award winning Broadway hit musical, Hamilton. Even after conquering the world of Broadway, Jasmine ventured out to Los Angeles where she reveals she felt as if she was starting from scratch, grinding all over again to prove herself in the business of show business. While she admits to having moments of wanting to give up, Jasmine shares the mindsets she’s carried with her over the years to help keep her moving through those moments of uncertainty. The belief she has in herself has earned her an extensive list of credits including roles on, HBO’s “Girls” and “Mrs. Fletcher”, as well as roles in films such as “Blindspotting”, “The Photograph”, “Monsters and Men” and can currently be seen on Quibi’s newly released, “#FreeRayShawn”. If you’re looking for tips, be sure to take notes as Jasmine reveals details about her own process for creating riveting characters that light up the screen.   For exclusive content surrounding this and all podcast episodes, sign up for our amazing newsletter at AlyshiaOchse.com. S2 008: Michael Urie — Why You Should Ask For What You Want

In today’s episode, we’re chatting with actor, director, producer, and host Michael Urie whose early desire to become a drama teacher carved an unexpected path to his breakout role in ABC’s UGLY BETTY. From growing up in Texas, making movies with G.I. Joes, to winning the John Housman Award at Julliard, his journey shows tenacity, trust, and uncanny comedic instinct. In this episode, he shares the pivotal moments that moved his career forward, moments when he trusted his gut and asked for what he wanted. We chat about his love for theater and New York—how throughout his almost 20 year career (which includes television credits such as YOUNGER, PARTNERS, THE GOOD WIFE, THE GOOD FIGHT, MODERN FAMILY, and the upcoming CBS & WARNER BROS TV sitcom FUN) he’s stayed as close to the stage as he possibly can. It was theater that encouraged him to stand bravely in his truth, and it was the smell of hot garbage on 8th Avenue in the summer that told him ‘this is where I want to be.’”   For exclusive content surrounding this and all podcast episodes, sign up for our amazing newsletter at AlyshiaOchse.com.
