Ep 99: Money, the Federal Reserve, and Christian Ethics with Jordan Bush

In this episode I talk to Jordan Bush, executive director of Thank God for Bitcoin Media and co-author of the book Thank God for Bitcoin. We discuss the Federal Reserve, central banking, the production of money and how money functions, and why Christians need to think about the morality of these issues. We discuss alternatives to fiat currency such as gold and bitcoin, and Jordan suggests some helpful resources for those who want to learn more. This episode is an excellent introduction to the philosophy and problems of central banking and fiat currency and how Christians can thoughtfully reflect on those issues.  Media Referenced:Jordan Bush on Twitter: @jmbushwritesThank God for Bitcoin Media Twitter: @ThankGodforBTCThank God for Bitcoin website: tgfb.comThank God for Bitcoin book: https://a.co/d/482hYOkThe Ethics of Money Production, Hulsmann: https://a.co/d/eShcXFTHonest Money, North: https://a.co/d/7WekvSiThe Bitcoin Standard, Ammous: https://a.co/d/9HjwKzSThe Little Bitcoin Book: https://a.co/d/hmPWuXzAdam O’Brein on Bitcoin: https://libertarianchristians.com/episode/bitcoin-and-the-future-of-currency-with-adam-obrien/  The Protestant Libertarian Podcast is a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute and a part of the Christians For Liberty Network. Ep 98: Medieval Christianity and the Road to Religious Freedom

This episode was originally recorded for Cody Cook's podcast Cantus-Firmus. In our conversation, we discuss medieval Christianity, the Enlightenment, and the long road to religious freedom in the west. I am a social studies teacher and my class covers the global middle ages, and it was a lot of fun to take a dive into historical issues that I teach in the classroom and draw comparisons to their theological, social, and political relevance. This was a really fun conversation that addresses a different but related set of topics that I cover on the show, and I know you are going to enjoy it! Ep 96: The Liberty Book Club with Shaun Collins and Joel Ellenwood

In this episode I talk with Shaun Collins, host of the podcast Buds n’ Reality, and Joel Ellenwood, the great Infinite Zeal Syndicate, about the books in libertarian theory that have most shaped their worldviews. We discuss the reasons why it is important to read, what books every libertarian ought to know, and personal favorite books. Joel demonstrates why Abraham Lincoln was not, in reality, a good president, and Shaun explains why we should remain skeptical of mainstream narratives. In this episode I speak with Herman Szabo, a libertarian from the country of Georgia who was elected to Georgia’s parliament in 2020. He talks about the Georgian equivalent of the LP, which is called the Girchi Party, how he and three other Girchi members were elected into parliament, and the accomplishments of the liberty movement in that country. He also discusses the problems facing Georgia and how the Girchi Party sponsors the Church of Biblical Freedom, which enables Georgian citizens to challenge military conscription. We also discuss Ukraine-Russia, Javier Milei, and the global future of libertarianism. Ep 93: The Female Disciples in the Gospels with Holly Carey

In this episode I talk to Holly Carey, professor and chair of the Biblical Studies department at Point University in Georgia, about her brand-new book Women Who Do: Female Disciples in the Gospels, published by Eerdmans in October 2023. We discuss the role that women play as disciples in the four gospels and the book of Acts, as well as the experience of women in antiquity and the ways in which interpretation of the Gospels can and should shape how we read other New Testament texts about women in the church. Dr. Carey explains how often overlooked texts can radically reshape the way that women are presented in the Bible and how these insights have major implications for the practice of the modern church. This is an excellent conversation that you will not want to miss! Media Referenced:Women Who Do: https://a.co/d/b17zueHHolly Carey Point University: https://point.edu/about/faculty/holly-carey/Instagram: @Hjcarey33Facebook: Holly Ritchie CareyThe Protestant Libertarian Podcast is a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute and a part of the Christians For Liberty Network. Ep 92: The Socialist Roots of Modern Biblical Studies

In F.A. Hayek’s book The Counter-Revolution of Science, he explains the significance of two French thinkers, Henri de Saint Simon and Auguste Comte, who, by applying the language and methods of the natural sciences to social phenomenon, are responsible for the dramatic rise of socialism, totalitarianism, and the idea of the technocratic state. Even though these names have largely been forgotten to history, their ideas were wildly popular during the 19th century and merged with Hegelianism in Germany, leading to the works of Marx and Engles. In passing, Hayek refers to two prominent 19th century Biblical scholars, David Fredrich Strauss and Ernst Renan, both of whom were influenced by Saint-Simonian ideas. Both of these scholars were deeply influential in the development of modern Biblical scholarship, and both had ties to the nationalist and statist movements that swept Europe during this time. Strauss was the most influential member of the Tubingen School in Germany, which set the parameters for modern Biblical scholarship, and Renan had an outsized influence in France. I outline as a preliminary theory the significance of these two figures being attached to Saint-Simonian ideas and how that has quite possibly shaped the presuppositions of all modern Biblical scholarship down to this day. I also explain how Albert Schweitzer correctly sets both of their work in the context of Hegelianism but missed the Hegelian merger with Saint-Simonianism.  We need a Biblical scholar who can take these ideas further, and I plan on addressing this interesting insight in more detail in later shows.   Media Referenced:The Counter-Revolution of Science, F.A. Ep 91: How Woodrow Wilson Invaded Medieval Europe

In this special Thanksgiving bonus episode, I read an excerpt from Norman Cantor’s Inventing the Middle Ages, which is a history of 20th century medieval scholarship. In this book he describes the ways in which the social and cultural contexts of 20th century medievalists were projected back into the Middle Ages, shaping our historical understanding of that period. The two most influential American medievalists were Charles Haskins and Joseph Strayer, both of whom were dedicated Wilsonians and whose scholarship on medieval government suspiciously conformed to Woodrow Wilson’s theory of government. Haskins was one of three academics who accompanied Wilson during his post-WWI tour of Europe and was in part responsible for creating the dysfunction that led to WWII and the Cold War. Strayer found himself working for the CIA during the 1950s. This is a really challenging and interesting read that makes us think about both how we interpret history and how contemporary intellectual trends influence the way we understand reality.  Media Referenced:Inventing the Middle Ages, Norman CantorThe Quest for the Historical Jesus, Albert Schweitzer Powers and Thrones, Dan JonesHenry Cadbury and Modernizing Jesus Episode: https://libertarianchristians.com/episode/henry-cadbury-anti-war-biblical-scholar-warned-against-modernizing-jesus/  The Protestant Libertarian Podcast is a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute and a part of the Christians For Liberty Network. Ep 90: The Counter-Revolution of Science by F.A. Hayek

In this episode I review the main arguments of F.A. Hayek’s 1952 book ‘The Counter-Revolution of Science’, in which he outlines the rise of socialist and totalitarian thought in the early 19th century. Hayek’s main point in this brilliant and insightful book is that the methods and language of the natural sciences were illegitimately applied to the study of society and created the conditions under which French thinkers began to believe that history, politics, and economics operated under natural laws that could be discovered and then applied to society by central planners. He explores how the work of Henri de Saint-Simon and Auguste Comte in the early 19th century laid the foundation for modern authoritarian thinking, how these ideas spread to Germany and fused with Hegelianism, and their abiding influence on all branches of social studies, including economics and theology. He explores the historical context of these thinkers and demonstrates the many philosophical flaws and idiosyncrasies in their work. This book is technical, illuminating, relevant, and well-worth the read. Media Referenced:The Counter-Revolution of Science, F.A.
