In this episode, I talk with Dr. Carmen Joy Imes, who is associate professor of Old Testament at Biola University, about her brand-new book ‘Being God’s Image: Why Creation Still Matters’, out now on IVP Academic. Dr. Imes explains how we as humans bear the image of God, what it means for how we understand our place and our purpose in creation, the reality of the human condition, the meaning of the incarnation, and our future hope. This is a wide-ranging conversation that explores exactly what it means to be made as ‘God’s image’.  Media Referenced:Buy Being God’s Image: https://a.co/d/51AflTaBuy Carmen’s other books: https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B07BNPY56Q?ingress=0&visitId=53dd8dae-be63-4001-bb7d-fbbcbd23d2f3&store_ref=ap_rdr&ref_=ap_rdrCarmen’s Blog: https://carmenjoyimes.blogspot.com/YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@CarmenJoyImesPhDTwitter: @carmenjoyimes The Protestant Libertarian Podcast is a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute and a part of the Christians For Liberty Network. Ep 67: Creating the Canon: How the New Testament Was Formed with Benjamin Laird

In this episode I talk to Dr. Benjamin Laird, associate professor of biblical studies at Liberty University, about his brand-new Creating the Canon: Composition, Controversy, and the Authority of the New Testament, which is out now on IVP Academic. In our conversation, we discuss how the 27 documents that became the New Testament were produced, including the process of writing and how they were shared, copied, and spread. Laird then explains how they came to be identified as a collection of writings, critiquing both popular myths and explaining how the works that became the New Testament were identified as authoritative soon after they were written. Finally, Dr. Larid explains how the New Testament writings are all associated with the apostles, which makes them both authoritative and historically reliable. Ep 66: The High Cost of Inflation and the War in Ukraine

In this episode, I explain how inflation is an increase in the quantity of money, and how that growth of the money supply ultimately leads to higher prices and hurts consumers. We explore how many Americans are feeling increased financial insecurity, how the Federal Reserve controls the American money supply, and why ‘price inflation’ is a term used by politicians and bureaucrats to place the blame for higher prices on businesses instead of their manipulation of the monetary system, taxes, and regulation. We then explore how the military industrial complex also creates higher prices, since the government must tax and inflate to pay for our wars. We play a clip of president Eisenhower’s famous ‘Military Industrial Complex’ speech, and reveal how the War on Terror and the war in Ukraine benefits the politicians, bureaucrats, and defense contractors while hurting the rest of us. We then take a brief look at the Bible and how we can think about these issues theologically.  Media Referenced:Robert Aro, Fewer Americans Say They Are Doing Okay Financially: https://mises.org/power-market/fewer-americans-say-they-are-doing-okay-financially Eric Boehm, COVID Stimulus Spending Played ‘Sizable Role’ in Inflation: https://reason.com/2023/02/02/covid-stimulus-spending-played-sizable-role-in-inflation/ Ludwig Von Mises, On Money and Inflation: https://a.co/d/760ohVE Walt Zlotow, Billions in Weapons, Zero Negotiations, Reveal Real US Agenda in Ukraine: https://www.antiwar.com/blog/2022/04/29/billions-in-weapons-zero-negotiations-reveal-real-us-agenda-in-ukraine/ Cost of the 20-Year War on Terror: https://www.brown.edu/news/2021-09-01/costsofwar Lloyd Austin Raytheon Connection: https://www.opensecrets.org/revolving/rev_summary.php?id=82688The Protestant Libertarian Podcast is a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute and a part of the Christians For Liberty Network. Ep 65: ‘The Statement on Christian Nationalism and the Gospel’ with Cody Cook

In this episode, Cody Cook and I discuss The Statement on Christian Nationalism and the Gospel, a document being drafted and revised by a group of evangelical leaders who want to produce a clear definition of ‘Christian nationalism’. This take is in many ways more nuanced that Stephen Wolfe’s The Case for Christian Nationalism, and Cody and I examine several claims made in the statement and show how they are at odds with both a libertarian and a Christian understanding of politics. This episode marks the conclusion of a trilogy of episodes that I have released on Christian nationalism. Listen to this one and then check out those other episodes!  *Please note that the statement is being continually revised; we are addressing claims made in the second version, which was published on May 23, 2023. Those claims may change in future revisions.  Media Referenced:The Statement on Christian Nationalism and the Gospel: https://www.statementonchristiannationalism.com/Twitter Page: @CGNStatementEp 60: The Case Against Christian Nationalism: https://theprotestantlibertarianpodcast.buzzsprout.com/1978104/12780590Ep 62: A Reformed Critique of Christian Nationalism with Stephen Angliss: https://theprotestantlibertarianpodcast.buzzsprout.com/1978104/12877729Cody Cook’s Website: https://www.cantus-firmus.comTwitter: @CantusFirmusCCCantus Firmus Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cantus-firmus/id926516807 The Protestant Libertarian Podcast is a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute and a part of the Christians For Liberty Network. Ep 64: The Gospel and Allegiance to King Jesus with Matthew Bates

In this episode, I talk with Dr. Matthew Bates of Quincy University about two very important books. The first is his brand-new book entitled Why the Gospel, which explores the nature of the Gospel message and why it matters for the church. The second is his provocative 2017 book Salvation by Allegiance Alone, in which he argues that the term ‘faith’ should be understood as allegiance to Jesus as king. We discuss how the Gospel is the announcement of the kingship of Jesus, sealed by his death, resurrection, and ascension, and what it means for Jesus to be king of the world. We then explore how the faith we place in the Gospel should linguistically and historically be understood as allegiance to Jesus as king, which is central to the message of the Gospel, and the practical and theological consequences of this understanding of both ‘Gospel’ and ‘faith’. Ep 63: The Beginning and End of All Things: Biblical Creation with Edward Klink

In this episode I talk to Edward Klink III, who goes by ‘Mickey’, about his new book The Beginning and End of All Things: A Biblical Theology of Creation and New Creation, published by IVP Academic. In this sweeping book, Mickey explores the Biblical significance of creation, arguing that the world that God has made is inherently good and that human beings play an integral role in the story of creation. We discuss the entire Bible, framed by Genesis 1-2 and Revelation 21-22, and show how God is working in and through creation to redeem and restore the good world that He has made. This is a very powerful conversation that reshapes the way we think about God, the world, humanity, and eschatology. Listen to this episode and buy a copy of his book! Ep 62: A Reformed Critique of Christian Nationalism with Stephen Angliss

In this episode, I talk to Stephen Angliss, senior pastor of Graham Emmanuel Baptist Church in Graham, Washington, about Christian nationalism. Stephen is a reformed Baptist who has read and is critical of Stephen Wolfe’s book The Case for Christian Nationalism, which I reviewed and critiqued in episode 60. Wolfe claims to be reformed, and Stephen offers a theological rebuttal to Wolfe from within reformed theology. We explore the significance of God’s covenant with Noah, the relationship between the church and Israel, dispensationalism, the scriptural basis of natural law, and much more! Stephen helpfully defines and defends the reformed tradition and demonstrates why Wolfe’s argument doesn’t work. Ep 60: The Case Against Christian Nationalism

In this episode, I respond to Stephen Wolfe’s popular book The Case for Christian Nationalism, which has become the most significant written work on modern Christian nationalism. Based on a drafted review I wrote for the Libertarian Christian Institute, I look at six important concepts that Wolfe outlines in his book and respond to each of them. I critique Wolfe’s presentation of Christian nationalism with Biblical interpretation, theology, and political philosophy. If you need a concise primer on Christian nationalism and the Christian libertarian response, this is the show for you! Here are the six concepts we cover in the show:  I. Defining ‘Christian Nationalism’II. Nationalism and Government are a Part of God’s Good Creation III. A Christian Nation Needs Christian LawsIV. The Christian PrinceV.
