Why Formula 1 Might Actually Be Worth the Hype

The moment that locals have been dreading all year is finally here: Formula 1’s Las Vegas Grand Prix. While the actual race cars hit the Strip this month, the city has been under construction to prepare the 3.8 mile track and other infrastructure for most of this year and the traffic just keeps getting worse. Locals and city officials have voiced their complaints so much that it’s hard to believe that anyone is excited for the 3-day takeover. Since it’s coming no matter how much we complain, host Dayvid Figler sits down with The Nevada Independent reporter and F1 superfan Jacob Solis. He shares why he’s excited to see his hometown take on F1 and how other locals can get excited.Read Jacob’s reporting in the Nevada Independent on F1’s impact on locals here and about ticketing here.Looking for a free watch party? The City’s New No-Go Zone, More Jara Drama, and Top Water Wasters

Following the footsteps of the County’s controversial ban on people convicted of crimes from entering the Strip, the City is now proposing a similar ordinance around the Fremont Street Experience. It’s turned into a battle over the soul of spaces like FSE: Are these public forums for free speech, or are they commercial engines for our city coffers to be protected… at all costs? On today’s Friday news roundup, host Dayvid Figler talks about this issue with reporter Michael “MJ” Lyle of the Nevada Current and editor Lorraine Longhi from the Review-Journal. They also spill the tea on the surprising critique that Nevada Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager recently lobbed at embattled CCSD Superintendent Jesus Jara (and the District’s spicy reply). And finally, that list of the Valley’s top 100 water users is once again circulating — it’s no surprise who’s at the top of that list. We’re on social media! Follow us @CityCastVegas on Instagram. How to Pronounce Nevada Correctly (And Why It Matters)

Today is Nevada Day, the anniversary of when Nevada became a state — and every Nevadan worth their salt knows it’s Nevada and not “Neh-vah-duh” (the chosen pronunciation of East Coast interlopers and political pretenders). So in honor of the holiday, we’re bringing back a conversation that host Dayvid Figler had last year with UNR linguist Valerie Fridland, author of “Like, Literally, Dude: Arguing for the Good in Bad English.” She explains how our state’s pronunciation is connected to Biblical-era beheadings, the Western gold rush, and modern campaign trail gaffes. We’re on social media! Why This Obscure Court Process Is Costing the County $83K and Counting

When someone who is clearly mentally unstable gets charged with a crime, everything shuts down and they get sent to competency court — basically, you have to be considered mentally fit to help your defense attorney, know right from wrong, and stand trial. In Nevada, you’re supposed to get mental health treatment within one week of your competency hearing. But delays in this system have some defendants serving weeks or even months in jail without treatment — two have even died before getting help. Today, host Dayvid Figler talks with Review-Journal reporter Katelyn Newberg, who recently wrote about the fines that the Division of Public and Behavioral Health is stacking up ($83,000 and counting) as they continue to defy court orders. We’re on social media! Accused Teens Laughing in Court, Sex Trafficking at Motel 6, and Nevada Day

The two teens accused in the fatal hit and run case showed up in court this week for their trial date — and were caught laughing and apparently “flipping off” the victim’s family. Internet commenters have responded with fury — but aside from the family’s allegation, where is the evidence they made that gesture? Today, host Dayvid Figler sits down with producer Layla Muhammad and contributor Vogue Robinson to talk about the nuance in covering this fraught case, how clickbait headlines can obscure facts, and whether or not these teens are being tried in the court of public opinion before their actual trial. Next up, we talk about the woman suing a Vegas Motel 6 for allegedly turning a blind eye to her sex trafficking, and last but not least, we talk about how real Nevada Day (October 31st) turned into Nevada Day observed (the Friday before) and what we’re up to this weekend. We’re on social media! Vegas Is an Abortion Haven. What Happens Now?

In the wake of the Dobbs decision last year, 21 states banned or severely restricted abortion rights. But patients weren’t going to stop getting abortions — now they just have to travel further to get them. And as an easy-access tourist destination bordering red states, Las Vegas has quickly become one of the destinations for those seeking abortion care: Las Vegas Planned Parenthood centers, for example, have seen a 31% increase in abortion appointments and a 600% increase in patients arriving from Texas. Today, host Dayvid Figler sits down with Adrienne Mansanares, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Rocky Mountain Region, to talk about what this means for Las Vegas, and what comes next. We’re on social media! How to Sound Like a Vegas Local

Every city has its linguistic quirks (we’re looking at you, “HOW-stun” street in New York City) — saying things “right” is one of the quickest ways to prove that you’re a local or reveal that you’re not. So what about Southern Nevada’s local lingo? Do you know how to pronounce McLeod Dr., Tule Springs, or that weird exit off the I-15, Zzyzx Road? And how have hospitality, gaming, and our terrible traffic influenced the way we speak? Today, lifelong Las Vegan and City Cast host Dayvid Figler sits down with two other longtime locals, Brent Holmes and Lille Allen, to rattle off the “must-know” words for newcomers, and debate some of our more contentious terms.Be sure to check our interview with UNR linguist Valerie Fridland about the pronunciation of “Nevada.”We’re on social media!
