You Have Permission
Dan Koch
So many of us have been given bad answers to good questions -- questions about God, suffering, prayer, fate, science, justice, and more -- often by people with pure intentions. But we needn't stop with those pat answers. You have permission to take both Christianity and the modern world very seriously, and this podcast will introduce you to people from across the Christian spectrum engaging these timeless and difficult questions in various ways.

Emergency Pod: Processing the Capitol Insurrection with John Van Deusen
John and I were scheduled to record a patron-exclusive episode today, a follow-up to our previous episode. We didn’t feel that that conversation was possible to have, given our strong feelings and need to process what we witnessed yesterday on the news as thousands of Trump-led supporters rioted and broke into the Capitol building. We hope our processing is helpful for your own processing! We discuss our reactions and emotions around Trumpist Christians, Christian nationalism, repentance, grief, conversion and testimonies, prayer, deep narratives given to me during my Evangelical upbringing, and more.Follow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: https://twitter.com/DanKochJoin the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.comYHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. How Do Autistic Christians Relate to God? (#98)
Erin Burnett, an autistic theologian, brings a fascinating perspective on how autistic Christians relate to God, based on her undergraduate thesis. She discusses progressive Christianity's appeal to autistic individuals and speculates that St. Paul might have been autistic. The conversation explores the challenges faced in traditional churches, emphasizing the need for inclusivity and understanding. Erin advocates for a theology rooted in love and compassion, highlighting how autism can enrich the spiritual community.

From Addict to Addictions Counselor (#97)
Jed Payne, host of the Church & Other Drugs Podcast, shares his story of serious lifelong drug addiction, how he ended up an addictions counselor, as well as some of the psychological tactics those counselors use to help addicts toward recovery. Specifically, “motivational interviewing” is a common approach Jed uses in his work, and Dan has recently been learning and practicing MI as part of his own psych education. This fairly practical conversation takes place in front of a theological backdrop which considers the utilization of social science and social services to be spiritually significant, taking advantages of the gifts and resources of people, institutions, and governments to make our world look more like the Kingdom of God on earth.Church & Other Drugs podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/church-other-drugs/id1191035186Follow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: https://twitter.com/DanKochEdited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia@gmail.com -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.comYHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. Spiritual Trauma & Scriptural Metaphors (#96)
Ashley Davis Gavila does "trauma-informed life coaching & spiritual care” with clients who have often suffered religious or spiritual abuse. She is not a therapist, and her work is therefore distinct from therapy, but both her dissertation research and client work give her an interesting perspective on this issue that I am, as you now all know, so interested in. So how about some trauma-informed podcast content, just in time for awkward holiday family conversations?Ashley’s site: https://desertbloomhealing.com/Dissertation: https://digitalcommons.georgefox.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1293&context=dminStreams of Living Water Podcast Series: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-94-streams-living-water-richard-foster-james/id917771018?i=1000391523930About the “Streams”: https://renovare.org/about/ideas/the-six-streamsFollow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia@gmail.com -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.comYHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. The Surprising Value of Megachurches (#95)
I know, I know, I know. Megachurches are so often panned and criticized that it is hard to consider whether or not or in what ways they might actually be good for people. But here is some serious peer-reviewed research to help burst us our of our bubbles from veteran religion researcher James K. Wellman, Jr. (University of Washington). "Christian Music": John Van Deusen (#94)
The first in a series of conversations with musicians who have had some experiences with “Christian Music,” whatever that ultimately means. John Van Deusen is one of my absolute favorite recording artists, period. Formerly leading the band The Lonely Forest, his solo work of the last few years is both phenomenal and prolific. And he has some TAKES about the Christian music industry!“Mind Reader” played from album 1: https://open.spotify.com/album/4V3EmTpSjw69h307nW9zPK?si=aGOWTrTnRyaXNX4-taOWoA“None Other” played from album 2: https://open.spotify.com/album/6UlGiLqUWdqlozYuiOihI1?si=i7MesHC-TV-6VIeu8Zq4vA“Whatever Makes You Mine” played from Album 3: https://open.spotify.com/album/601b2dRqWuGBNLQUxWkhDI?si=goqndRx3RrOWOPJ5MVHNHwLive on KEXP session: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NJAYG0Npb4Buffet: https://open.spotify.com/album/1G1ApeHhdPFlwESStrWhBa?si=_vnD3OUaQraFpUHtO3dDygFollow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia@gmail.com -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.comYHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. So, You're Deconstructing... (Dot Com) (#93)
Today we are celebrating the launch of Sarey Martin Concepcion and I’s web resource soyouredeconstructing.com! To do so, our entire little friend group has gathered around some microphones to tell stories from our own faith journeys, touching on various topics that tend to come up for people whose faith is changing and re-forming. I’m joined by Sarey, Sarah Lane Ritchie, Myron Penner and Tripp Fuller. Make sure to check out the sillier companion episode to this that is also airing today as on the Homebrewed Christianity Podcast feed, where Tripp, Sarey, Mason Mennenga and I compete in an Evangelical Fantasy Draft while consuming multiple beverages (and you can even vote on who has the best team!).Homebrewed SYD Launch episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/homebrewed-christianity-podcast/id276269040#episodeGuid=https%3A%2F%2Ftrippfuller.com%2F%3Fp%3D32131soyouredeconstructing.comFollow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia@gmail.com -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.comYHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. Church Failure, Church Future (#92)
Dan talks with Tony Jones about the failures of the Emerging Church movement, of which he was a central part, and what’s going on today with churches in America. How might they thrive in the future? Are there any signs that they will make necessary changes? What happens to churches after Covid? Why do gay-affirming people stay in non-affirming churches? What role does church actually play in people’s lives? Why didn’t the Emerging Church leaders pass the baton to the next generation? What is going on today with the “Nones” and “Spiritual but not Religious”? These and many other interesting questions are batted around, and Tony is a very fun interview. The Reverend Hunter: https://reverendhunter.com/Dan’s B4NP Episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-bible-for-normal-people/id1215420422#episodeGuid=f6f74bbc-d7b0-41f1-8a63-45a1946c18e3Resources for faith de/reconstruction: soyouredeconstructing.comFollow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia@gmail.com -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.comYHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. So You Want a Bible Podcast: Jared Byas & The Bible for Normal People (#91)
This is the first in a series of episodes where I interview hosts of podcasts that focus primarily on the Bible itself, since it is now clear to me that You Have Permission will never quite be one of those shows. And yet, there are many great shows that do focus on the Bible! So listen to these interviews, and see which Bible-focused podcasts resonate with you.SoYoureDeconstructing.comThe Bible for Normal People — https://peteenns.com/podcast/Genesis for Normal People: https://www.amazon.com/Genesis-Normal-People-Controversial-Misunderstood/dp/193922103XThe Bible Tells Me So: https://www.amazon.com/Bible-Tells-Me-Defending-Scripture/dp/0062272039Follow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia@gmail.com -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.comYHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. The Varieties of Religious & Spiritual Abuse (#90)
My guest is Dr. Paula Swindle, one of the only people in the world currently doing peer-reviewed research on the topic of spiritual and religious abuse. She is also on my dissertation committee (stoked!).
