I Don't Believe in that God: Joey Holman (Man on Man) (Re-broadcast)

*Re-broadcast* - I Don't Believe in that God: Joey Holman (Man on Man) (#118) Another installment of one of my favorite types of episodes, where I chat with people who don't identify as Christian. Oftentimes, I also don't believe in the God that they don't believe in. Joey Holman (ex-Cool Hand Luke) is one half of the Polyvinyl Records duo Man on Man, alongside his boyfriend Roddy Bottum (Faith No More). He grew up in a broken home outside Atlanta, found Evangelical Christianity in his teens, experienced dissonance around his gay sexuality, and eventually did some therapy and gained a lot of insight about his journey. I truly enjoyed our wide-ranging conversation.Man on Man (Spotify): https://open.spotify.com/album/6AnxYVoP4KPB14VjBnwYbd?si=53a17ebde4b34ac0Joey IG: https://www.instagram.com/holmanholmanholmanMan on Man IG: https://www.instagram.com/manonmanmusicNorthwind Seminary: www.northwindseminary.org/center-for-open-relational-theology_________________________________________________________Follow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: https://twitter.com/DanKochFaith deconstruction resources: soyouredeconstructing.comEdited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia@gmail.com -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.comYHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Learn more about your ad choices. The Importance of Curiosity (#183)

In an episode topic that should surprise no listeners of this show (ha!), Lore Ferguson Wilbert joins me today to discuss her book "A Curious Faith: The Questions God Asks, We Ask, and We Wish Someone Would Ask Us." Lore (pronounced “Lori”) aims to champion curiosity, especially in faith settings where doubt and asking questions aren't often encouraged or even allowed. She says, “Curiosity is kindness because it leads to healing". We cover some mechanisms that inhibit curiosity, like cultural taboos, technology, fear of the unknown, and partisanship.Lore’s Website: lorewilbert.com“A Curious Faith” Book: https://www.amazon.com/Curious-Faith-Questions-Someone-Would/dp/1587435691/ref=sr_1_1?gclid=Cj0KCQjwk7ugBhDIARIsAGuvgPb7dL_cCO8JxkMAIU4xl6iCOT-H8I0yCBrUmUWNgTqNfiP1JJ4lr_EaAgNmEALw_wcB&hvadid=241626459542&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9019667&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=15548315582689857757&hvtargid=kwd-201740026612&hydadcr=22532_10353775&keywords=curious+faith&qid=1678723641&sr=8-1“My Grandmother's Hand” Book by Resmaa Menakem: https://www.amazon.com/My-Grandmothers-Hands-Racialized-Pathway/dp/B08SFP773T/ref=sr_1_1?gclid=Cj0KCQjwk7ugBhDIARIsAGuvgPZSNJZdNgegub-QmDMXcLJC3vrtUzZ0Q1ygDrwPv4jrk4qfyKwpNEsaAl6rEALw_wcB&hvadid=321911793981&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9019667&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=15550108997234900723&hvtargid=kwd-605848025420&hydadcr=22561_10346245&keywords=my+grandmother%27s+hand&qid=1678723580&sr=8-1Northwind Seminary: www.northwindseminary.org/center-for-open-relational-theology___________________________________________Follow Dan on IG: www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: twitter.com/DanKochFaith deconstruction resources: www.soyouredeconstructing.com/Edited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia@gmail.com -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.comYHP Patron-only FB group: tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: www.dankochwords.com/yhp.htmlJoin Dan's email list: www.dankochwords.com/Artwork by sprungle.co/ Learn more about your ad choices. "Loving the Hell Out of Ourselves" (#182)

Co-authors and sisters Elaine Heath (former guest) and Janine Heath McGlynn join me to discuss their co-authored memoir "Loving the Hell Out of Ourselves." They start the book with a statement of purpose, "Our heartfelt hope is that this book helps you, our readers, to know that love, not shame, not fear, not hate, not damnation, love is God's meaning." We cover subjects like poverty & neglect, patriarchal authority structures, and the role of faith in healing from abusive home environments.Northwind Open & Relational Theology Center: https://www.northwindseminary.org/center-for-open-relational-theology“Loving the Hall Out of Ourselves” Book: https://www.amazon.com/Loving-Hell-Out-Ourselves-memoir/dp/1736845527Elaine’s Website: https://www.elaineaheath.org/YHP Ep #143 “The Church of the Future” with Elaine: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/you-have-permission/id1448000113?i=1000548816259“The Body Keeps the Score” Book: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=the+body+keeps+score&gclid=Cj0KCQiA6rCgBhDVARIsAK1kGPJWYNurphJ7pvFitjdFQz-JQ3E0ulK0LjuvE7pIqaq6SABFVqc7ZdMaAi7yEALw_wcB&hvadid=616991171471&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9019667&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=5613553688352369879&hvtargid=kwd-6817364741&hydadcr=24634_13611738&tag=googhydr-20&ref=pd_sl_1rceqz04c6_e“Fits, Trances, & Visions” Book by Ann Taves: https://press.princeton.edu/books/paperback/9780691010243/fits-trances-and-visions___________________________________________Follow Dan on IG: www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: twitter.com/DanKochFaith deconstruction resources: www.soyouredeconstructing.com/Edited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia@gmail.com -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.comYHP Patron-only FB group: tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: www.dankochwords.com/yhp.htmlJoin Dan's email list: www.dankochwords.com/Artwork by sprungle.co/ Learn more about your ad choices. Worries About Deconstruction - Josh Porter (Showbread) (#181)

Josh Porter (Showbread) joins me today for one of our "Worries About Deconstruction" episodes to talk about his book "Death to Deconstruction: Reclaiming Faithfulness as an act of Rebellion." Despite some agreement, this conversation delves into our fundamental disagreements around objective truth claims, personal doctrines, and Christian orthodoxy.Northwind Open & Relational Theology Center: https://www.northwindseminary.org/center-for-open-relational-theologyJosh’s Website: https://www.joshuasporter.comJosh’s Books: https://www.joshuasporter.com/books___________________________________________Follow Dan on IG: www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: twitter.com/DanKochFaith deconstruction resources: www.soyouredeconstructing.com/Edited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia@gmail.com -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.comYHP Patron-only FB group: tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: www.dankochwords.com/yhp.htmlJoin Dan's email list: www.dankochwords.com/Artwork by sprungle.co/ Learn more about your ad choices. Working Out Trauma Through Music (#180)

*This episode is not about trauma-focused music therapy, but rather the language festival-goers use around trauma and healing*In today's dual-feed release (also on my Pretty Good Vibrations Podcast), ethnomusicologist and author Nathan Myrick (Ph.D., Baylor University) joins me to discuss his research project studying the community surrounding Furnace Fest, a faith-adjacent heavy music festival held in Alabama. Nathan’s work focuses on "understanding humanity through the music they make, engage, and participate in." In a surprisingly emotional conversation for me, we cover the lasting effects the Christian punk/hardcore scene has had on so many people.Nathan's Website: nathanmyrick.com___________________________________________Follow Dan on IG: www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: twitter.com/DanKochFaith deconstruction resources: www.soyouredeconstructing.com/Edited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia@gmail.com -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankoch Email about the "sliding scale" for thePatreon: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.comYHP Patron-only FB group: tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: www.dankochwords.com/yhp.htmlJoin Dan's email list: www.dankochwords.com/Artwork by sprungle.co/ Learn more about your ad choices. Empty Altars: American Saints in a Cynical Age (#179)

Diana Butler Bass and Tripp Fuller join me today to discuss "Empty Altars," their 6-Week Lenten Exploration of little-known American “saints.” Diana asks, “What spiritual practices, what theological languages, what kinds of stories are motivating people in a multicultural, religiously pluralistic society?” and "How can we find goodness, beauty, and justice?" Through a lens of heroism, we cover how cynicism erodes gratitude and how "awe" plays a role in engaging with these stories. Rapture Culture & Mainline Futures (#178)

Joining me today is author Amy Frykholm to discuss her research on rapture culture and the future of mainline Protestantism. Amy suggests questions like "How do we not get attached to our forms?", "How do we continue to be willing to experiment?" and "How do we focus on what really matters?" We discuss embodied religious expression, the alienation doubt can bring, and the Left Behind Series' effect on rapture culture.Amy’s Website: https://amyfrykholm.com/Amy’s Podcast “In Search Of”: www.christiancentury.org/insearchofDaniel Silliman's book "Reading Evangelicals: How Christian Fiction Shaped a Culture and a Faith": www.amazon.com/Reading-Evangelicals-Christian-Fiction-Culture/dp/0802879357Daniel Silliman's YHP Episode "Reading Christian Fiction": https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/you-have-permission/id1448000113?i=1000541970308___________________________________________Follow Dan on IG: www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: twitter.com/DanKochFaith deconstruction resources: www.soyouredeconstructing.com/Edited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia@gmail.com -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankoch Email about the "sliding scale" for thePatreon: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.comYHP Patron-only FB group: tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: www.dankochwords.com/yhp.htmlJoin Dan's email list: www.dankochwords.com/Artwork by sprungle.co/ Learn more about your ad choices. The Good of Religion Without the Bad? (#177)

Tony Jones and I are joined by Jeff Green (Virginia Commonwealth University) and Daryl Van Tongeren (Hope College) to ask the vital question, "How can we get the benefits of religion without the potential dangers of religion?" Together we investigate what factors contribute to religion's positive and negative outcomes. Through this lens, we discuss ideological homogeneity, our need for certainty, cognitive dissonance, and how meaning-making can be such a strong motivator.Jeff's Faculty Page: https://psychology.vcu.edu/people/faculty/green.html Daryl's Faculty Page: https://hope.edu/directory/people/van-tongeren-daryl/index.htmlDaryl's Book "Humble: Free Yourself from the Traps of a Narcissistic World": https://www.amazon.com/Humble-Yourself-Traps-Narcissistic-World/dp/1615198571Tony's Website: https://reverendhunter.com/Help Fund Sarey's Movie (Now funding stretch goals!): http://winemakermovie.com/___________________________________________Follow Dan on IG: www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: twitter.com/DanKochFaith deconstruction resources: www.soyouredeconstructing.com/Edited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia@gmail.com -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankoch Email about the "sliding scale" for thePatreon: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.comYHP Patron-only FB group: tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: www.dankochwords.com/yhp.htmlJoin Dan's email list: www.dankochwords.com/Artwork by sprungle.co/ Learn more about your ad choices.
