Interviews with Astrologers from Romania and England
Episode 213 features a few short interviews that I did with different astrologers that I met in Romania and the England while I was traveling through Europe last month to attend two astrology conferences.
The first interview is with astrologers Oli Andrei Olar and Lelia V from Romania, the second interview is with Carmina Amza from Romania, and the third interview is with Israel Ajose from London.
I also recorded some longer interviews with other astrologers that were directed towards specific topics, which I've been releasing slowly in other episodes since I got back home, but these shorter interviews were meant to be briefer discussions just to showcase some of the cool people I met during my travels.
The interviews range from 14 to 24 minutes in length, and are available in both audio and video versions below.
Since I originally only intended to release them as video interviews, I'm going to post each video as a separate link below, but then in the audio version I will string all three of them together to form a single episode.
Oli Andrei Olar and Lelia V from Romania
Oli and Lelia were two cool younger astrologers I met in Romania who were listeners of the podcast. We had some drinks together one night early on, and I had a really good time hanging out with them. Oli is into Evolutionary Astrology, and Lelia talks a bit about the status of astrology among the younger generations in Romania.

This interview was conducted on Sunday, June 9, 2019, in Craiova, Romania, on the last day of the astrology conference that was hosted by the Romanian Astrologers Association.

Carmina Amza from Romania
Carmina is someone I was already familiar with before I went to Romania because I subscribe to her YouTube channel. She practices tropical Vedic astrology, as well as card reading and Human Design. She helped me translate two longer interviews I did with the founders of the Romanian Astrologers Association that day, which I will release separately as a full episode later this month. We traded interviews that day, and she also recorded an interview with me that was released on her channel recently.

Israel Ajose from London
Israel Ajose was one of my favorite people I got to hang out with on my trip to the UK. He is the Vice President of the Astrological Lodge of London, which holds meetings with lectures and classes there every Monday. We sat down on a Monday shortly before one of the Lodge meetings where I gave a talk, and we had a little discussion about the Lodge and what it is like organizing a local astrology group in London.

Israel teaches private classes and offers consultations in London, and you can follow him on Twitter or subscribe to his YouTube channel.

Clive Kavan: Publishing the Regulus Edition of William Lilly
Episode 212 features an interview with Clive Kavan about how he published the 1985 Regulus edition of William Lilly's book Christian Astrology, which helped to spur the revival of traditional astrology in modern times.
Lilly's book Christian Astrology was originally published in 1647, and it was the first major textbook astrology written in English, because prior to that time most astrological texts were written in Latin.
Lilly himself drew on a wide variety of different Hellenistic, Medieval, and Renaissance sources, and his book became very influential to subsequent generations of astrologers in the English-speaking world.
The book was not widely available in its original form for most of the 20th century though, and that is why the publication of the Regulus edition of Lilly in 1985 was important.
The Regulus edition made the earliest English-language textbook on astrology widely available again, helped re-popularize the practice of horary astrology, and also eventually helped contribute to a wider revival of interest in older or more traditional forms of astrology that has expanded even more in recent years.
For more background information on the impact of the Regulus edition of Lilly, see my previous episode with Lee Lehman on horary astrology, as well as my later episode on the astrologer William Lilly and his book Christian Astrology .
I met Clive by chance at a pub the first night I flew into London, where a group of astrologers were hanging out after the Monday night meeting of the Astrological Lodge. Someone told me that he had published the Regulus edition of Lilly, and after asking him some questions about how that came about, I knew I had to get this interview with him to capture some of this important history.
The interview was conducted on June 18, 2019 in the research library at the Theosophical Lodge of London, where the Astrological Lodge of London meets each week since 1915.
Clive brought some original documents to the meeting that day, including a first edition of Lilly, which I will post some pictures of in a gallery below.
For more info on Clive visit CliveKavan.com.

On Psychological Astrology, with John Green
Episode 210 of the podcast features an interview with astrologer John Green about psychological astrology, and some of the unique and valuable contributions it has made the contemporary practice of astrology over the past few decades.
John is the director of the Mercury Internet School of Psychological Astrology (MISPA), which offers a diploma course that combines astrology with depth, humanistic, and transpersonal psychology.
He originally studied with and became a tutor at the Centre for Psychological Astrology (CPA), which was founded by Liz Greene and Howard Sasportas in the 1980s, and his school represents a continuation of that lineage.
This interview was motivated by a discussion that John and I had about the recent revival of older forms of astrology, and how they might be synthesized with some of the some of the contemporary approaches to astrology that developed in modern times.
The main questions we tried to address in this interview were 1) to articulate what psychological astrology is, and 2) to talk about some of the important and valuable things it has to contribute to any future synthesis of the various astrological traditions.
While some of this may be review for those who have been in the astrological community for the past few decades, it may be useful for newer students of astrology who are just coming into field now, and don't necessarily know what they might be missing if they only study traditional forms of astrology.
In some ways this episode represents the continuation of a series over the past few years that has documented the emergence of modern astrology in the 20th century through figures such as Alan Leo, Evangeline Adams, Carl Jung, and Dane Rudhyar. This episode brings that series closer to completion by talking about some developments that occurred towards the end of the 20th century.
This interview was conducted in-person on Wednesday, June 19, 2019, in the research library of the Theosophical Society in London, towards the end of my trip to the UK to attend the 51st Annual Conference of the Astrological Association of Great Britain.
For more more information about John, see his website PsychologicalAstrology.com.
He is also the author of the book Do You Love Me? The Astrology of Relationships, which was the subject of episode 165, titled Synastry: The Astrology of Relationships.
This episode is available in both audio and video versions below.

Alan Leo and Early Modern Astrology, with Kim Farnell
Episode 209 features an interview with Kim Farnell about her new book titled Modern Astrologers: The Lives of Alan and Bessie Leo.
Alan Leo (1860–1917) is often credited with helping to spur the revival and popularization of astrology in the west in the early 20th century, through his efforts to publish magazines, horoscopes, and books.
In 1915 Alan and his wife Bessie Leo (1858–1931) founded the Astrological Lodge of London, which still holds weekly astrology meetings in London every Monday.
Kim has been the President of the Lodge since 2008, and we met in the research library of the Theosophical Society to conduct this interview on June 12, 2019.
During the course of the interview we discussed how Alan and Bessie got into astrology, their efforts to promote the subject, and their impact on the field.
Kim's book provides a detailed and insightful account of the practice of astrology around the turn of the 20th century, and I'd highly recommend checking it out.

Live Astrology Q&A Session at NORWAC 2019
In episode 208 astrologers Kelly Surtees, Austin Coppock, and Chris Brennan answer questions about astrology from listeners in front of a live audience at the 35th annual Northwest Astrological Conference in Seattle, Washington on May 23, 2019.
The Q&A session was recorded in front of a live audience of listeners, who flew in to Seattle to join us for the event the day before the conference officially began.
Listeners of the podcast sent in questions in the weeks leading up to the event, and we selected some of the best ones to answer and discuss during the Q&A session.
Some of the questions were submitted via Twitter, while others came from our channel on YouTube, and still others were sent in via email.
We received a lot of good questions, and while we weren't able to get to all of them, we did a pretty good job of tackling as many as we could in the two hours that we had that night.
We also did a recap of #NORWAC2019 in the first hour of the astrology forecast episode for June 2019 that we recorded immediately after we returned from the conference, if you want to hear more about it.
Below will be a list of some of the questions we answered in this episode, followed by links to download the recording at the bottom of the page.
This episode is available in both audio and video versions. Thanks to Cam White for helping to set up and record this event, and also to Stephen Coppock for editing the footage.

Evangeline Adams and the Advent of Astrology in America
In episode 206 Christopher Renstrom joins the show to talk about the work of the early 20th century astrologer Evangeline Adams, and the development and popularization of astrology in America.
In the first hour of this discussion we talk about the practice of astrology in America in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, and the factors that led to its rise, including spiritualism and the Theosophical Society.
Eventually we get to our main topic, which is the life and work of the early 20th century astrologer Evangeline Adams, who the historian James Holden says was the most famous astrologer in America in the first third of the 20th century.
During the course of the episode we talk about the famous anti-fortunetelling court case that Adams was involved in in 1914, her work with Aleister Crowley as a ghost writer for some of her books, and eventually how she reached the height of her popularity with a syndicated radio show in the early 1930s.
Most of the research behind this episode is based on a book by Karen Christino titled Foreseeing the Future: Evangeline Adams and Astrology in America, which was originally published in 2003, and released in a revised edition earlier this year.
Karen was not available to do an interview, but she suggested that I talk with Christopher, who has done a lot of research on the development of astrology in America.
Christopher recently gave a great lecture titled Trash Astrology: A History of Pop Astrology in America, which chronicles the popularization of astrology in the United States.
This episode forms a nice followup to a few previous episodes, such as The Modern Revival of Astrology, with Nick Campion, and Elsbeth Ebertin and the Rise of Women in Astrology. Check out those episodes if you would like to explore some of the themes in this one further.

The Master of the Nativity: Finding the Ruler of the Chart
In episode 205 astrologers Chris Brennan and Leisa Schaim present a lecture on the ancient method of identifying the overall ruler of a birth chart, called the Master of the Nativity.
While in modern times astrologers tend to refer to the ruler of the Ascendant as the ruler of the chart, in ancient Greco-Roman astrology the method for determining the ruler of the chart was much more complex.
There are references to the master of the nativity in many of the surviving astrological texts from the Hellenistic astrology tradition, although there are not many surviving discussions about how to calculate it.
The approach that we present in this lecture is derived from chapter 30 of Porphyry's Introduction to the Tetrabiblos, which is itself derived from a lost work of definitions by Antiochus of Athens.
During the course of the lecture we talk about how to calculate the predominator (epikratētōr), the master of the nativity (oikodespotēs geneseōs), the co-master or joint master of the nativity (sunoikodespotēs), and the lord of the nativity (kurios).
We also discuss various questions such as the arguments for and against having one overall chart ruler, the use of the master of the nativity to identify the guardian spirit or daimōn by ancient astrologers and philosophers, and the use of this doctrine to identify more important placements in a chart.
This lecture was originally presented by Chris at the Northwest Astrological Conference in May of 2017, and then again at the United Astrology Conference in May of 2018. We decided to re-record the lecture for the podcast now in order to give a more careful and deliberate presentation of the material, a better recording, and in order to open up this research to a wider audience.

First I will outline the calculations for the different rulers of the nativity presented in this lecture, and then you will find the recordings available at the bottom of the page.
How to Calculate the Rulers of the Birth Chart According to Porphyry
Here are the rules for calculating the different rulers of the birth chart that we review in this podcast, based on chapter 30 of Porphyry's Introduction.
The Rulers of the Nativity
There are four different rulers of the nativity that are important to pay attention to:
Predominator (epikratētōr)
Master of the Nativity (oikodespotēs)
Co-Master or Joint Master of the Nativity (sunoikodespotēs)
Lord of the Nativity (kurios)
Predominator
In order to find the Master of the Nativity you must first find the Predominator, since the Predominator is the one who designates the Master. The Predominator is typically one of the luminaries, as long as they are well-placed. If they are not, then it defaults to the Ascendant.
Here are Porphyry’s considerations for determining if one of the luminaries can become Predominator:
The luminary that belongs to the sect of the chart is preferred (Sun day day, Moon by night).
The luminary that is more angular is preferred over one that is in a less angular house.
The one that is more eastern in the chart (towards the rising sign) is preferred.
g. if the Sun is in the 1st house in a day chart, Sun is the Predominator.
Sun in the 9th with the Moon in the 1st, then Moon is Predominator.
If both luminaries are in cadent houses, then the Ascendant becomes Predominator.
Master of the Nativity
According to Antiochus and Porphyry there are two variant traditions for calculating the Master:
The Master of the Nativity is the domicile lord of the Predominator.
